GENERAL:

From GCTC 15/05/2010
Race 3 – Jockey G Baker was reprimanded for striking BIG KEN CELT 6 times prior to the 100m.
Race 4 – Jockey N Seymour was reprimanded for striking RAGING FORTIES 6 times prior to the 100m.

Race 1: Coastal Tipper Hire QTIS 2YO H’cap – 900m
1st – Demarcation 2nd – Astralon 3rd – Queen Thyra 4th – Piccolo Royal

The start of this race was delayed due to ELVINE’S ELSIE being difficult to load. Connections were advised that a further 2 Barrier Certificates would be required before the filly races again.

COLETTA GAL (App. M Wood) was slow to begin.

QUEEN THYRA (C Whiteley) and PICCOLO ROYAL (D Barron) jumped away awkwardly.

CROISADE (N Seymour) which was slow to begin was further hampered by ASTRALON (K Fujii) which jumped away awkwardly.

Near the 500m CROISADE dipped of its own accord.

Jockey C Whiteley reported that QUEEN THYRA, in his opinion, failed to handle the rain affected track conditions and was inclined to lay in under pressure in the home straight.

App. M Wood reported that COLETTA GAL raced greenly throughout the event and was not comfortable in the rain affected track conditions.

Correct weight was delayed whilst Stewards viewed the patrol film to ascertain whether PICCOLO ROYAL (D Barron) had prematurely jumped ahead of the rest of the field. After viewing the film, Stewards were satisfied that no runner was afforded an unfair start and correct weight was declared.

Race 2: Allcoast Recyclers Maiden Plate - 2200m
1st – Seatune 2nd – Tarjay 3rd – Wildboywill 4th – Mythical

Stewards permitted Jockey C Whiteley to be replaced as the rider on PURELY GOLDEN when Jockey M Radecker was delayed due to transportation difficulties.

SEATUNE (A Nicholls) jumped away awkwardly.

Shortly after the start UNIVERSAL KNIGHT (G Killen) had to be steadied when tightened for room between PURELY GOLDEN (C Whiteley) and MYTHICAL (A Erhart) which shifted in.

TARJAY (R Wiggins) raced wide in the early stages of the event.

Near the 1400m Jockey G Killen (UNIVERSAL KNIGHT) attempted to readjust his spur and became unbalanced.

Approaching the 200m TARJAY was tightened for room between MYTHICAL which shifted out and SEATUNE which shifted in under pressure.

Stewards questioned Trainer G Purcell regarding the seemingly improved performance of SEATUNE. Mr Purcell stated that SEATUNE’s most recent starts have not been over distances suited to the gelding and it is his opinion that the step up in distance today and the addition of blinkers both contributed towards the forward showing. Stewards noted the explanation.

Correct weight was delayed whilst Jockey R Wiggins the rider of TARJAY, viewed the patrol film to ascertain if he had grounds against SEATUNE (A Nicholls). After viewing the film Jockey Wiggins elected not to proceed with an objection.

A post-race veterinary examination of SPIRIT OF UMTALI (D Barron) revealed no apparent abnormalities at the time of inspection.

Race 3: Ross Cook Maiden Plate - 1400m
1st – Friday Celebre 2nd – Primary Colour 3rd – Sunshine Lass 4th – Twilight Express

RUSTY FEATHER (App. P Schmidt) was slow to begin.

FRIDAY CELEBRE (App. M Wood) which had difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the home turn was disappointed for a run leaving the 400m between TWILIGHT EXPRESS (R Wiggins) and WILY TIM (G Baker) which shifted out and away from SHE’S INSPIRED (C Whiteley) which shifted out. As a result App. M Wood (FRIDAY CELEBRE) had to stop riding and alter course to obtain clear running.

App. M Hellyer (M’LADY SCARLETT) dropped is whip near the 100m.

Race 4: Marlene Cook 3yo Maiden H’cap - 1200m
1st – Tunahog 2nd – Prince Showcorz 3rd – Ballet Bird 4th – Ardent Love

HAWKS PRIDE (A Erhart) and PRINCE SHOWCORZ (C Whiteley) were slow to begin.

ATTUNGA (G Baker) which was slow to begin was further hampered shortly after the start when ANGELON (App. M Hellyer) shifted in.

Near the 800m BALLET BIRD (App. M Wood), despite the efforts of its rider, improved into a tight run between PRINCE SHOWCORZ and ARDENT LOVE (App. M Palmer). ARDENT LOVE then shifted in causing BALLET BIRD to be steadied and lose ground at that point.

Near the 600m PRINCE SHOWCORZ improved on to the heels of TUNAHOG (K Fujii) and was forced to shift out to avoid that horse’s heels.

HAWKS PRIDE tailed off during the early and middle stages of the event. Jockey A Erhart reported that the horse raced greenly throughout and failed to handle the rain affected track conditions. A veterinary examination of HAWKS PRIDE failed to reveal any apparent abnormalities at the time of examination.

A veterinary examination of ANGELON (App. M Hellyer) which tailed off failed to reveal any apparent abnormalities at the time of examination.

Race 5: Southern Cross Media Bradworks Cup Class 1 H’cap – 1200mm
1st – Cousine Island 2nd – Semisyn 3rd – Aminutemore 4th – Orletsky

Stewards considered an objection lodged by Trainer D Schmidt and App. P Schmidt the rider of AMINUTEMORE which finished 3rd against SEMISYN (M Paget) being declared the 2nd placegetter on the grounds of alleged interference in the home straight. After taking evidence and viewing the patrol film Stewards could not be satisfied that the ground lost in the incident was sufficient to reverse the half length margin and therefore dismissed the protest and declared correct weight on the numbers semaphored:

1st: Cousine Island
2nd: Semisyn
3rd: Aminutemore
4th: Orletsky

At a subsequent inquiry it was established that AMINUTEMORE was tightened for room leaving the 200m between COUSINE ISLAND (C Whiteley) and SEMISYN which shifted out under pressure. Jockey M Paget was reprimanded advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances in future.

BON BROOK (K Fujii) was slow to begin.

Near the 1000m FLICKERING STORM (N Seymour) was tightened for room and had to be steadied between SEMISYN (M Paget) and MY KIRRA (K Forrester) which hung out at that point of the race.

Approaching the 800m FLICKERING STORM again had to be steadied to avoid the heels of SEMISYN which shifted in. Jockey M Paget (SEMISYN) was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances in future.

Leaving the 400m FLICKERING STORM was hampered and taken wider on the track when AMINUTEMORE shifted out to obtain clear running.

Race 6: Coastal Tipper Hire Class 2 H’cap – 1400m
1st – Catcher Man 2nd – Kalinga Lady 3rd – Double Rise 4th – Gold land

As Jockey A Pattillo was to be overweight, Stewards permitted Jockey L Rolls to be the rider replacement on DOUBLE RISE. Jockey Pattillo was fined the sum of $100.

TOWER BRIDGE (D Barron) jumped away awkwardly making contact with BENEFACTION (M Paget).

Near the 1000m KALINGA LADY (App. T Huxham) shifted in making contact with GOLD LAND (M Heagney) causing both horses to become unbalanced.

Near the 600m TOWER BRIDGE shifted out to improve and in doing so forced BILLUM (C Whiteley) wider on the track.

KALINGA LADY shifted out rounding the home turn forcing CATHER MAN (G Baker) wide on the track.

Stewards questioned Jockey M Paget and Trainer L Kelly regarding the disappointing performance of BENEFACTION and also questioned the tactics adopted on the colt in today’s event. Jockey Paget stated that in his opinion the horse did not handle the rain affected track conditions and at no stage did BENEFACTION feel comfortable in the conditions. He stated that when he placed the horse under pressure from the 600m he felt it failed to respond and ran on only fairly. Jockey Paget advised Stewards that he had been instructed to settle BENEFACTION in a position at the tail of the field. Trainer L Kelly confirmed the instructions and advised Stewards that this will continue to be the horse’s racing pattern. He stated that he was not entirely disappointed with the performance as the horse in his opinion is not suited to rain affected track conditions and was coming back in distance from 1600m to 1400m of today’s event. He further stated that in his opinion BENEFACTION is better suited to races over a longer distance. A post-race veterinary examination of BENEFACTION failed to reveal any apparent abnormalities at the time of examination.

Race 7: Brett Cook Open H’cap - 1400m
1st – Felixtrinidad 2nd – Masai Pride 3rd – Majestic Ruler 4th – Bann Ruby

ALBERT CADABRA (K Fujii) was a late scratching at 9.10 am on veterinary advice.

MASAI PRIDE (App. M Wood) was slow to begin.

FELIXTRINIDAD (App. B Looker) which had a tendency to over-race got its head in the air on a number of occasions leaving the 1000m.

UNDER THE COUNTER (App. M Hellyer) raced wide throughout the event.

Near the 800m MASAI PRIDE shifted in of its own accord and made contact with the running rail.

DENMARKET (R Wiggins) suffered a bleeding attack during the event. Trainer D Kelly was advised that the horse will incur a mandatory 3 month ban from racing under the provisions of AR53A.

Stewards questioned stable representative Mr S Hammersley and Jockey J Bowditch regarding the disappointing performance of PIT LANE. Jockey Bowditch advised Stewards that after obtaining a good position in the event the horse was under pressure when asked for a response leaving the 600m. He further stated that he felt that PIT LANE was awkward in its action over the concluding stages. Mr Hammersley stated that he was very disappointed with the performance and the stable had expected a forward showing in today’s event. A post-race veterinary examination of PIT LANE revealed that the horse may have been struck in the eye by a clod during the running of the event. Mr Hammersley gave an undertaking to advise Stewards of any significant findings with PIT LANE in the coming days.

Race 8: Allcoast Recyclers Class 4 H’cap - 1300m
1st – Monashee Warrior 2nd – Oigles 3rd – Go Johemma 4th – Dead Heat: Satula & Lake George

JUST A CLASSIC (C Whiteley) was inspected by the veterinary surgeon prior to the start and passed to take its place in the field.

NAADJI (G Baker) and KISANI (App. M Palmer) were slow to begin.

TETRA (N Evans) was tightened for room and lost ground at the start between TYCOON KEN (L Cheshire) which shifted out and SEETHING DUCK (K Wharton) which shifted in.

TETRA, TYCOON KEN and KISANI raced wide for the majority of the event.

Stewards sought an explanation from Jockey C Whiteley the rider of JUST A CLASSIC as to why, when clear running appeared to be available to him when leaving the 200m to the inside of SEETHING DUCK, he elected to shift out rounding that mare’s heels. Jockey Whiteley explained that he had been instructed by Trainer J Bannon to shift the horse to the outside if possible in the straight and ride with the whip in his right hand as JUST A CLASSIC has a tendency to lay in and is reluctant to take runs to the inside of horses. Trainer T Bannon confirmed these instructions and Stewards accepted the explanation of both parties.

Stewards questioned Jockey N Evans regarding the performance of TETRA today. Jockey Evans stated that the horse failed to handle the surface today and this coupled with racing wide throughout resulted in TETRA compounding badly. A post-race veterinary examination of TETRA failed to reveal any apparent abnormalities at the time of inspection.
