Race 1: Surfers Paradise RSL Class 5 H’cap
1st – The Snicster 2nd – Bitasilk 3rd – Dane Fontaine 4th – Walpersdorf

As Jockey K Forrester (BITASILK) failed to arrive on course by the prescribed time, he was replaced by Jockey D Barron. Jockey Forrester was fined the sum of $100.

PRINCE TELESTO (G Lynch) blundered on jumping away.

DANE FONTAINE (D Griffin) over-raced during the early stages of the event.

FLYPASS (App. B Looker) made the 1800m turn awkwardly and shifted out forcing BITASILK (D Barron) wider on the track. A short distance later BITASILK shifted in making contact with FLYPASS causing both horses to become unbalanced.

BITASILK raced wide throughout the event.

Near the 600m FLYPASS was tightened and had to be steadied when racing between BITASILK and THE SNICSTER which shifted out. D Tanti rider of THE SNICSTER was subsequently reprimanded and advised to show greater care in similar circumstances.

Approaching the 400m THE SNICSTER (D Tanti) shifted out to improve and in doing so made contact with BITASILK.

Stewards questioned Jockey T Treichel regarding the tactics adopted on WALPERSDORF, particularly his reasons for pressuring the horse out of the barriers when WALPERSDORF has an established racing pattern of settling back in the field. Furthermore, Stewards questioned his reasons for pressuring the horse to obtain a position outside the lead when leaving the 1700m and also his reasons for placing WALPERSDORF under heavy pressure after leaving the 800m. Evidence was also taken from Trainer J Hubbard who informed Stewards he had instructed Jockey Treichel to settle back in the field however, if there was a lack of pace in the event not to position the gelding on the fence and to allow the horse to improve around other runners rather than restrain the horse if it commenced to over-race. He further added that he had instructed Jockey Treichel to make his run into the race from the 700m as he is of the opinion the horse is one paced and does not sprint quickly and must sustain a long run in order to finish the race off well. Jockey Treichel stated that he had initially pressured the horse out of the barriers so as not to be too far back in the field and had attempted to position the horse behind DANE FONTAINE (D Griffin). However, when approaching the 1700m, due to the slow pace in the race, he was of the opinion he could not hold the gelding without fighting it to remain behind DANE FONTAINE and elected to ride forward to position WALPERSDORF outside the lead. He admitted that this was against instructions however, he was of the view this was the best option under the circumstances. He further stated that he elected to ride forward at the 700m to fulfil the requirements of his instructions. Stewards advised Jockey Treichel that in their opinion he had ridden a poorly judged race for a rider of his experience. However, given the instructions that had been issued, Stewards ruled that his actions were not unreasonable in all of the circumstances, but advised Jockey Treichel that they reserved the right to revisit the matter should further evidence come to light.

Stewards questioned Jockey D Barron regarding the tactics adopted on BITASILK, particularly his reasons for electing to shift out around the heels of FLYPASS when approaching the winning post the first time which resulted in BITASILK being positioned wide on the track from that point onwards. Jockey Barron stated that he was of the opinion that if he shifted his horse to the outside of FLYPASS he would be in a position to improve into the race when he wished to, rather than be held up to the inside of runners on the fence. He further stated that in his opinion he was a victim of circumstances when FLYPASS made the 1800m turn awkwardly and forced him wider on the track. He stated that with hindsight staying in a position on the fence may have been a more beneficial option. Stewards after considering Jockey Barron’s explanation were of the view that he may have erred at that stage of the race however could not be satisfied that his actions were that unreasonable to be held culpable under the rules.

DEVA DENZ (JP Stanley) which was slow to begin was hampered shortly after the start when LITTLE BROWN HORSE (P Keane) jumped away awkwardly.

Jockey P Keane was reprimanded for allowing LITTLE BROWN HORSE to shift in near the 700m which resulted in WESTERN SEQUENTIAL (App. B Richardson) and ALNEDIYM which were racing to the inside of that runner both being placed in restricted room.

Leaving the 600m WESTSERN SEQUENTIAL (App. B Richardson) hung out across the heels of LITTLE BROWN HORSE and clipped that horse’s heels resulting in App. B Richardson being dislodged.

Race 4: Nerang RSL and Memorial Club QTIS 3YO H’cap – 1100m
1st – Ruapehu Boy 2nd – Eureka Dubai 3rd – Angelcourt 4th – Another Titan

Correct weight was delayed whilst Stewards viewed the patrol film to ascertain if MUNDI GULLY (JP Stanley) which was considerably slow to begin was afforded a fair start. After taking evidence from Jockey Stanley and viewing the patrol film, Stewards found that as the start was effected MUNDI GULLY lowered its head in the barriers and as a result failed to jump with the remainder of the field. In the circumstances, Stewards were comfortably satisfied that MUNDI GULLY had been afforded a fair start and correct weight was declared. Stewards advised Trainer’s representative, Mr G Green, that a warning would be placed on MUNDI GULLY’s barrier manners.

OUR TOM CAT (App. C Priest) was slow to begin.

Near the 900m ST HALOR (G Lynch) was tightened for room and had to be steadied when racing between OUR TOM CAT and ANGELCOURT (App. B Looker) which shifted in and away from EUREKA DUBAI (App. P Schmidt).

Near the 850m OUR TOM CAT was tightened for room between the fence and EUREKA DUBAI which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider.

Approaching the 800m SIR QUALIFIED (D Tanti) which was over-racing, clipped the heels of (D Griffin) and blundered losing considerable ground. MUNDI GULLY (JP Stanley) and AT SUNDOWN (App. J Letherby) were both forced to take evasive action and lost ground as a result.

Leaving the 800m ANGELCOURT over-raced during the early and middle stages of the event and had to be checked from the heels of EUREKA DUBAI.

BELLE VERDE (K Fuji) raced wide throughout the event.

Race 5: Collas Moro Ross Fillies and Mares Class 1 H’cap – 1200m
1st – Madame Sleeper 2nd – Taunt Pauline 3rd – Miss Burger 4th – Missonet

LITTLE MISS OMBRA (D Green) which jumped away awkwardly was hampered shortly after the start between MISSONET (T Treichel) and TAUNT PAULINE (G Lynch) which shifted out.

VIVIR (App. B Wallace) reared as the start was effected and lost considerable ground.

Leaving the 600m SECRET PLEASURE (App. P Schmidt) improved on to the heels of ORLETSKY (K Fuji) and had to be steadied.

Near the 200m ORLETSKY shifted out under pressure hampering SECRET PLEASURE which in turn shifted out across the heels of UNREFUSEABLE (App. P Keane) causing that horse to be steadied.

MISS BURGER (D Griffin) shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages of the event.

Stewards sought an explanation from App. P Schmidt regarding the below market expectation performance of SECRET PLEASURE. Ms Schmidt stated that after obtaining a favourable forward position, the horse travelled well until leaving the 600m when pressured to improve into the race. She added that the horse in her opinion was disappointing in the run to the finish however could offer no explanation for the performance. Trainer’s representative, Mr Michael Chomley, was advised to instruct Trainer Ms K Schweida to contact Stewards in the coming days should anything come to light which may have affected the filly’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination of SECRET PLEASURE failed to reveal any apparent abnormalities at the time of inspection.

Race 6: Grand Motors Maiden Plate – 1200m
1st – Emvoss 2nd – Miss Judge 3rd – God’s Cobba 4th – She’s Candy

OUR RECIDIVIST (D Barron) was a late withdrawal at 3.07 pm by order of the Stewards when the horse refused to be loaded. Prior to the announcement of correct weight all monies invested on OUR RECIDIVIST were ordered to be refunded. All winning bets were ordered to be paid less 8 cents in the dollar for a win and 9 cents for a place on the face value of the ticket. Stable representative, Ms T Simmons, was advised that OUR RECIDIVIST must obtain 2 further Barrier Certificates before its next race start.

BICKIE PEDLAR (T Treichel) was considerably slow to begin. Trainer A Willick was advised that a Barrier Certificate is required prior to its next start.

TWO NIPS (L Williams) was slow to begin.

ROSAGAZE bucked shortly after the start dislodging Jockey K Fuji. Trainer G Heinrich was advised that an official barrier trial was required prior to the mare’s next race start.

Near the 200m BICKIE PEDLAR was steadied when racing between TWO NIPS and RED LEMONADE (App. P Keane) which shifted out under pressure.

On 2 occasions between the 200m and 100m GOD’S COBBA (JP Stanley) was obliged to alter course and shift out to avoid the heels of MISS JUDGE (D Griffin) which shifted out under pressure.

Stewards questioned Jockey T Treichel rider of BICKIE PEDLAR regarding the performance of that gelding. Jockey Treichel stated that after being slow to begin the horse failed to muster early speed and he was forced to ride vigorously during the first 400m and in his opinion performed disappointingly and only finished the race off fairly. Trainer A Willick stated that BICKIE PEDLAR had been given a number of preparations since its last start and a step back in distance may have contributed to the performance. She added in her view that BICKIE PEDLAR is more suited to races over more ground. Stewards noted the comments.
