As B. Stewart was overweight for his rides in Races 5 and 7 stewards permitted rider replacements as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. B. Stewart was subsequently fined the sum of $300.00.

From Doomben 12 May 2012 – Race 8

Rider G. Cooksley was issued with a severe reprimand for allowing DAPH’N’ALF to shift in near the 1000m when insufficiently clear of VIVA LAS (B. Shinn), resulting in VIVA LAS having to be restrained by its rider to avoid the heels of DAPH’N’ALF.

Race 1: The Bidet Shop Maiden SW Plate – 900m
1st – Feeling Naughty 2nd – Classicalist 3rd – Utzon’s Vision 4th – Angry Apples

WANDA’S GIRL (C. Whiteley) was tightened for room at the start between NAKANAI (L. Rolls) and SHE’S FIRED UP (A. Spinks), which shifted in after being bumped by SUPURVERA (K. Forrester).

B. Stewart the rider of ANGRY APPLES pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a) in that near the 900m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of SUPURVERA forcing that runner in across the rightful running of SHE’S FIRED UP, resulting in that runner being checked to avoid the heels of SUPURVERA. B. Stewart’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 5 meetings to commence at the expiration of a current suspension to take effect from midnight 27 July 2012 and expire midnight 1 August 2012.

For a short distance rounding the home turn CLASSICALIST (G. Cooksley) was unable to improve when awkwardly placed at the heels of ANGRY APPLES (B. Stewart).

Race 2: Surfers RSL Benchmark 80 H’Cap – 2200m
1st – Bell Academy 2nd – Vital Organ 3rd – Keep Winning 4th – Johanna’s Own

Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight BELL ACADEMY (C. Munce) was held up when unable to obtain clear running.

Stewards sought an explanation from J. Byrne regarding the performance of JOHANNA’S OWN. J. Byrne stated that JOHANNA’S OWN settled in a position worse than midfield and travelled comfortably in the middle stages and did not quicken under pressure from the 400m. J. Byrne added that JOHANNA’S OWN did not run out a strong 2200m today but in his view this could be attributed to stepping up from 1600m last start.

Race 3: Hinterland Caravans Maiden 4YO & Up H’Cap – 1400m
1st – Eidsvold 2nd – Rabanal 3rd – Allamanda Lad 4th – Maywyninthespring

EIDSVOLD (L. Cassidy) and MAYWYNINTHESPRING (D. Sparks) were both slow to begin.

SET TO ZERO (J. Byrne) overraced in the early stages of the event.

When the pace steadied leaving the 900m RABANAL (C. Munce) had to be steadied from the heels of ALLAMANDA LAD (App P. Keane). CHIMNEY ROCK (App A. Allen) which was following also had to be steadied.

Near the 700m COUNTRY MILE (C. Small) commenced to overrace and shifted out to avoid the heels of SET TO ZERO.

CHIMNEY ROCK hung out from the 600m and at the entrance to the home straight had to be steadied when disappointed for clear running between COUNTRY MILE and MARKED AFFAIR (App J. Johnson), which shifted out. App Johnson the rider of MARKED AFFAIR was urged to attempt to keep her mounts on a straight course at all times.
Near the 100m EIDSVOLD shifted in and brushed SET TO ZERO.

D. Sparks the rider of MAYWYNINTHESPRING pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a) in that he failed to make sufficient effort to prevent his mount from shifting in near the 500m and as a result shifted in when insufficiently clear of COUNTY MILE, resulting in its rider C. Small having to take hold of his mount to avoid the heels of MAYWYNINTHESPRING. D. Sparks’ licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings to commence midnight 26 May 2012 and expire midnight 8 June 2012.

D. Sparks was also found guilty under the provisions of AR137A(5)(a)(ii) in that he used his whip in a forehand manner on 8 occasions prior to the 100m. D. Sparks’ licence was suspended for a period of 10 meetings to commence midnight 26 May 2012 and expire 11 June 2012. Stewards ordered that both suspensions be served concurrently. When assessing penalty stewards took into account D. Sparks’ poor record in relation to his use of the whip.

Over the concluding stages SET TO ZERO was inclined to lay out and had to be steadied from the heels of EIDSVOLD, which also shifted in slightly under pressure.

A post race veterinary examination of CHIMNEY ROCK revealed the gelding had sustained a minor laceration to its off hind bumper.

D. Sparks was questioned regarding the riding tactics he adopted on MAYWYNINTHESPRING, particularly the reason for him, after being slow to begin and settling at the rear of the field, riding forward and making a sustained run around the field from the 800m. D. Sparks explained that he was instructed to improve into the race from this point as MAYWYNINTHESPRING has performed well when ridden in this manner and the gelding is one paced and is unable to sprint when placed under pressure. Trainer G. Bow confirmed these instructions and added that in his opinion MAYWYNINTHESPRING is best suited when ridden in this manner. Stewards noted the explanations of both parties however, advised D. Sparks that after being slow to begin it may have been a better option to ride MAYWYNINTHESPRING with cover and improve into the race at a later stage.

Race 4: Gamma Wealth Management Class 4 H’Cap – 1200m
1st – Signified 2nd – Mik Yelrow 3rd – Flying Shadow 4th – Tabassi

As R. McMahon was overweight stewards permitted Michael Cahill to be substituted as the rider of CRAIGELLACHIE. R. McMahon was subsequently fined the sum of $100.00.

SIGNIFIED which slipped over in the race day stalls was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start. SIGNIFIED was further examined whilst parading behind the barriers and was cleared to start.

CRAIGELLACHIE was slow to begin.

CRAIGELLACHIE had difficulty securing clear running in the home straight and after passing the 200m was disappointed for a run between FLAGGES FLYING (J. Taylor) and FLYING SHADOW (A. Mundy).

ZOFA (App K. Matheson) raced 3 wide throughout the event.

Stewards sought an explanation from App A. Allen regarding the riding tactics adopted on SIGNIFIED, which led today’s event which is in contrast to the gelding’s most recent racing pattern. App Allen advised that he was instructed to settle SIGNIFIED in a handy position with cover if possible but after beginning well and when there was no genuine speed he was able to cross the runners to his inside without having to apply any significant pressure to his mount. Stewards noted his explanation.

Race 5: Vital Hearing QTIS 3YO Maiden H’Cap – 1400m
1st – Dicko’s Dream 2nd – Jet Ace 3rd – Show Me The Gem 4th – In Taipei

MOOCHIN was declared a late scratching at 12.15 p.m. by order of stewards acting on veterinary advice.

FLYING HOME (R. Bell) and DRIVING HEART (G. Killen) were both slow to begin.

For some distance approaching and passing the 1000m NORDIC JET (App T. Bell) overraced.

After passing the 900m BELIEVE IN HEART (K. Fujii) raced in restricted room between JET ACE (C. Munce) and IN TAIPEI (R. Wiggins), which shifted in slightly.

DRIVING HEART compounded from the 600m to be beaten a considerable distance. A post race veterinary examination of DRIVING HEART revealed the gelding to be lame in the near fore leg. Trainer H. Reed was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced prior to DRIVING HEART again racing. Mr Reed advised stewards that he will now retire DRIVING HEART from racing.

In the early part of the home straight AS WE GO BY (L. Rolls) was held up and unable to improve between EVERYTHING TO GAIN and PANHANDLE.

Near the 300m AS WE GO BY shifted out and brushed PANHANDLE.

EVERYTHING TO GAIN (R. McMahon), PANHANDLE (M. Cahill) and NORDIC JET all raced wide throughout the event.

A post race veterinary examination of PANHANDLE revealed the filly to have sustained a mild abrasion to the off hind pastern.

M. Cahill was asked to explain the performance of PANHANDLE today. M. Cahilll stated that the filly began well and travelled comfortably in the early and middle stages all be it racing 3 wide with cover. M. Cahill added that when he applied pressure to PANHANDLE approaching the 400m the filly did not respond and was disappointing. A post race veterinary examination of PANHANDLE revealed the filly had sustained a minor abrasion to the off hind leg.

Race 6: Green Tea X50 Class 2 H’Cap – 1400m
1st – Happy To Win 2nd – Cathay Lady 3rd – Mightysui 4th – Five O’Clock

INDEX PAGE was declared a late scratching at 1 p.m. by order of stewards after acting on a confirmed phonecall from trainer K. Schweida who advised the filly had injured itself whilst being transported to the course.
GREENER (T. Treichel) was slow to begin.

DORCHESTER (J. Byrne) and FIVE O’CLOCK (B. Stewart) bumped at the start.

FIVE O’CLOCK overraced in the early and middle stages of the event.

After passing the 100m DORCHESTER was inconvenienced by HAPPY TO WIN (C. Munce) when that runner shifted in when insufficiently clear. C. Munce the rider of HAPPY TO WIN was issued with a reprimand and advised to make a greater effort to keep his mounts on a straight course in future.

Race 7: Erwin’s Pacific Travel Class 1 H’Cap – 1200m
1st – Flaming Aura 2nd – Karl The Great 3rd – Uno Joker 4th – Rock Beauty

Soon after the start CLASSIC VUITTON (K. Fujii) was tightened for room between FELTHAM (S. Scriven) and ROCK BEAUTY (R. McMahon) both of which shifted ground.

LOMU (A. Spinks) raced ungenerously approaching the 1000m when being restrained to the rear of the field.

FELTHAM overraced for some distance after passing the 900m.

FUMA (A. Mundy) was unable to secure clear running rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight.

Near the 300m FUMA shifted out to improve resulting in VIVAREA (App P. Schmidt) and READY TO RULE (K. Forrester) being hampered.

NON CAPISHE (J. Byrne), HIDDEN ROCK (A. Pattillo) and ALL FEAR (App T. Bell) all raced wide throughout the event.

S. Scriven reported that FELTHAM was unable to sprint when placed under pressure from the 400m, which in his view was due to the gelding dropping back in distance for today’s race and having to carry 58.5 kilos. A post race veterinary examination of FELTHAM revealed the gelding to be lame in the near hind leg. Trainer M. Wilson will be advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness will be required prior to FELTHAM again racing.

A post race veterinary examination of ROCK BEAUTY revealed the filly to have been galloped on on the off side knee.
