When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on PACE EGG in particular when settling back in the field, which is in contrast to its most recent performance, Matthew Palmer stated that the instructions were to settle in a forward position if at all possible however, after receiving interference at the start the horse settled further back than anticipated despite his efforts in an endeavour to push forward. He added that near the 800m when caught wide and still back in the field he elected to take hold in an endeavour to find cover closer to the running rail at the rear of the small field. Matthew Palmer further added that once placed under pressure PACE EGG found the line fairly.

SHOW ME AN ACE (A. Pattillo) overraced in the early and middle stages of the event.
Stewards sought an explanation from J.P. Stanley regarding the riding tactics adopted on MUJAHU in particular the horse settling at the rear of field which is in contrast to its most recent racing pattern and his riding of that gelding over the final 400m. J. Stanley explained that his riding instructions were to settle in a forward position with cover but after being a little slow to begin he was then hampered between MIRABEAU and CATCH THE LIGHT and lost ground, which resulted in him settling at the rear of the field. J. Stanley further stated that the connections advised him that the gelding only possesses a short sprint and soon after entering the home straight he endeavoured to shift wider as he was of the opinion that the inside section of the track was inferior ground but was unable to improve to the outside as MR SLICK (D. Griffin) was racing to his outside. J. Stanley added that he placed the horse under pressure from the 200m and MUJAHU only sprinted until inside the 100m and from that point commenced to weaken. Trainer K. St Vincent confirmed the instructions and added that he had specifically instruction J. Stanley to conserve the horse for a final sprint from the 200m as the horse’s best performances have been when ridden in this manner. Stewards noted the explanations tendered by both parties.
