SUPPLEMENTARY
From Gold Coast Turf Club 22 March 2014 – Race 2
Stewards today finalised an inquiry into the riding of FONSECA, particularly rounding the home turn and in the home straight. After questioning Jockey Forrester on the day Stewards adjourned the inquiry so as to question Trainer J Nikolic who had to leave the course immediately following the race to attend to horses engaged at Eagle Farm.
Jockey Forrester stated that after being slow to begin he took up a position on the fence at the rear of the field. Jockey Forrester noted that FONSECA felt awkward in its action in the early stages of the race but commenced to travel fairly during the middle stages. Jockey Forrester conceded that there was an opportunity to improve to the outside of FEDSON (J Morris) leaving the 500m but he did not believe that FONSECA was travelling well enough to place the gelding under vigorous riding at that point of the race. Jockey Forrester added that despite his efforts FONSECA finished the race off only fairly.
Mr Nikolic stated that FONSECA had been slow to begin at its previous three starts and as such he had expected it to take up a position at the rear of the field and advised Stewards that he did not have any concerns with the riding of Jockey Forrester. Mr Nikolic advised Stewards on the day following the race he noticed some soreness in the off fore leg of FONSECA and presented a veterinary report of an x-ray which confirmed that FONSECA was suffering from bone chips in its off fore leg causing it to be lame. Mr Nikolic advised that as a result of recent poor performances and the subsequent veterinary report FONSECA would now be retired from racing.
Bearing in mind the veterinary evidence, Stewards took no direct action except to advise Jockey Forrester that he had erred in his riding leaving the 500m and in the early stages of the home straight where he should have ridden FONSECA with greater vigour so as to improve to the outside of FEDSON earlier than he had on this occasion. A veterinary certificate of fitness would be required should FONSECA race again.
Race 1: Bryan Guy Racing Maiden Plate – 900m
1st – Lady Foxy 2nd – Awesome Sight 3rd – Sapphire Quest 4th – Metza
As C Van Der Werf was indisposed due to transport difficulties, she was replaced on LADY FOXY by App. T Wolfgram.
A pre-race veterinary examination of HAPPY MAVOURNEEN (N Masuda) which had not raced in 23 months cleared the mare to race.
Trainer C Anderson advised Stewards that AWESOME SIGHT (C Whiteley) would be ridden with cover today if circumstances permit. After beginning well Jockey Whiteley attempted to comply with these instructions however was unable to obtain a position with cover in the early stages and was obliged to race wide throughout. Jockey Whiteley advised Stewards that he was reluctant to restrain AWESOME SIGHT in the middle stages given the short distance of the race and the prevailing track conditions.
LADY FOXY blundered when jumping away.
LADY FOXY hung out approaching and rounding the home turn.
Near the 50m SAPPHIRE QUEST (C Schmidt) which improved onto the heels of the weakening METZA (A Pattillo) had to be steadied and became unbalanced.
Trainer D Kelly reported that METZA tied up following the race. Mr Kelly was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness would be required prior to METZA racing again.
Race 2: Playschool Kindergarten Class 2 H’cap – 900m
1st – Flying Riddle 2nd – Spurs and Sashes 3rd – Natural Dancer 4th – Navy Chic
Shortly after the start NAVY CHIC (T Treichel) had to be checked and lost ground when tightened for room between SPURS AND SASHES (T Wolfgram) and HIDE THE MOON (A Pattillo) which shifted out. As a consequence NAVY CHIC shifted out and bumped SPURS AND SASHES which also lost ground.
FLYING RIDDLE (C Schmidt) laid out in the home straight causing SPURS AND SASHES to alter course back to the inside of that runner near the 100m.
Jockey A Pattillo reported that HIDE THE MOON failed to handle the prevailing track conditions at any stage of the race and for that reason he was reluctant to place the gelding under pressure in the home straight. Trainer S Cumming confirmed that HIDE THE MOON had performed poorly in the past when racing on heavy tracks. Their explanations were noted.
Race 3: Moloney MacCallum Lawyers Class 3 Plate – 1300m
1st – Beaufort Gyre 2nd – Hypothesis 3rd – Chosen Talent 4th – Paniolo

Race 4: Help Jay Raceday 3YO H’cap – 1400m

Due to a clerical error, App. J Johnson was incorrectly advertised in the race book as claiming 1.5 kgs. App. Johnson rode her 80th winner at Eagle Farm on Wednesday 26th March and as such now has no claim at provincial meetings. Furthermore, App. Johnson was incorrectly declared as the rider of ANOTHER SHADE. Jockey T Treichel subsequently rode ANOTHER SHADE. Public announcements were made to this effect.
The start was delayed when HELEN’S ANGEL (T Wolfgram) was unable to be led to the barriers. HELEN’S ANGEL was subsequently withdrawn by order of stewards at 3.15 pm. All monies invested on HELEN’S ANGEL were ordered to be refunded. Deductions applicable to bets placed on the winner and place-getters prior to 3.15 pm:
52 cents in the dollar for the win - #7 (IRISH TOFFEE)

Trainer K Doughty was reprimanded for failing to declare Jockey S Galloway as the rider of GRANDE GLORY by the prescribed time.
Trainer M Eggleston was fined the sum of $100 for the late declaration of Jockey D Griffin as the rider of PUGNARE.
LOOK AT ANYTHING (T Treichel) which was fractious in the tie-up stalls became cast for a short time. A pre-race veterinary examination of LOOK AT ANYTHING passed the filly to take its place in the field.
SECRETS TO LOSE (J Morris) blundered on jumping away and as a result bumped LOOK AT ANYTHING (T Treichel) which began awkwardly.
GRANDE GLORY (S Galloway) over-raced approaching the 600m and was steadied from the heels of MAHOE LASS (J Kokotajlo) which shifted out forcing PUGNARE (D Griffin) wider on the track.
CASINO CENTURY (A Pattillo) and PUGNARE raced wide throughout the event.
Leaving the 300m SECRETS TO LOSE (J Morris) which was weakening shifted out abruptly resulting in MAHOE LASS having to be checked from its heels and become unbalanced for a short distance. Whilst mindful of the actions of SECRETS TO LOSE, Jockey Morris was issued with a severe reprimand for failing to make a greater effort to prevent the mare shifting out. A post-race veterinary examination of SECRETS TO LOSE failed to reveal any apparent abnormalities at the time of examination.
Race 6: 4221 Constructions F & M Class 1 H’cap – 1200m
1st – Destiny’s Lass 2nd – Cool Trick 3rd – Choruses 4th – Regal Tier
A veterinary examination of DESTINY’S LASS (T Wolfgram) behind the barriers, cleared the mare to start.
COOL TRICK (J Morris) began awkwardly, shifted out inconveniencing CARA BLANCA (T Treichel) which was initially slow to begin.
Jockey J Morris (COOL TRICK) reported that approaching the 800m he attempted to obtain a position with cover behind DESTINY’S LASS, however, REGAL TIER (S Galloway) improved to his inside at that point forcing COOL TRICK to race three wide throughout.
Jockey S Galloway (REGAL TIER) was reprimanded for using his whip in a forehand manner on more than 5 permitted occasions prior to the 100m.
Race 7: Ladies in Racing Magazine C, G & E Class 1 H’cap – 1200m
Dead Heat 1st – Kaputski & Old Feeling 2nd – 3rd – Marscay Force 4th – Varakel
Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer G Yorke for the late declaration of Jockey Matthew Palmer as the rider of MARSCAY FORCE.
The start was delayed when KAPUTSKI (A Merritt) proved difficult to load. Trainer N Schofield was advised that a warning was placed on the gelding’s barrier manners.
There was a delay to correct weight to allow Stewards to review the start which had to be effected manually to ensure all runners were afforded a fair start and also for Jockey Merritt to view the official photo-finish. Stewards subsequently declared correct weight on the numbers semaphored.
ROCK LANE (T Treichel) which was fractious in the barriers began awkwardly and lost ground.
EASYAYE (S Galloway) was slow to begin.
MARSCAY FORCE (Matthew Palmer) was obliged to race wide throughout the event.
Near the 200m MARSCAY FORCE shifted out and bumped EASYAYE resulting in that horse becoming very awkward and losing ground. A post-race veterinary examination of EASYAYE revealed the gelding to be lame in the near fore leg. Trainer K Hickmott was advised that he must obtain a veterinary certificate of fitness before EASYAYE’s next race start.
Over the concluding stages VARAKEL (D Griffin) had to be eased when tightened for room between KAPUTSKI and OLD FEELING (T Wolfgram) both of which shifted ground.
