The only explanation App Wolfgram could offer was that WONDERFUL DIAMONDS had performed best in the past when racing over much further ground than that of today.
When questioned as to the overall performance of SMAKATUS App A. Holt stated that after beginning only fairly he was of the view that he was going to be caught wide in the early stages so he elected to take hold to take up a position with cover, which resulted in SMAKATUS racing further back than anticipated. App Holt added that SMAKATUS travelled well during the early and middle stages and had difficulty obtaining clear running in the home straight, which he felt had a detrimental affect on the gelding’s performance as it had performed best in the past when afforded clear galloping room.
When questioned as to the performance of TROMBONE ALLEY, which weakened from the 400m, jockey B. El-Issa stated that the gelding never travelled comfortably which he put down to the prevailing track conditions.
