Race 1: Fulton Hogan Maiden Plate 1000m
On return to scale, apprentice J. Greacen, rider of the second placegetter, SAVAGE ROCK, lodged a protest against KARMA FORCE (B. Powell) being declared the winner, alleging interference near the 500m. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the stewards' patrol film, it was established that leaving the 500m, KARMA FORCE shifted in, making contact with SAVAGE ROCK which resulted in J. Greacen easing momentarily. In considering the objection, stewards were mindful of the vicinity in which this incident occurred in relation to the finish line, the margin of a neck between the two runners at the finish and the manner in which both horses ran to the finish. As stewards could not be satisfied that had the interference not occurred that SAVAGE ROCK would have beaten KARMA FORCE, stewards dismissed the protest and correct weight was declared on the Judges placings. At a subsequent inquiry stewards found that KARMA FORCE hung in despite the efforts of the rider making contact with SAVAGE ROCK which shifted in tightening CUPPA TEA LOVE onto the running rail and being severely checked. G. Wilson, trainer of KARMA FORCE, was advised that the gelding would be required to officially trial to the satisfaction of stewards before racing again.
BILLIE’S GOLD – tightened for room at the start.
KARMA FORCE – knuckled on jumping away. Hung in throughout and proved difficult to ride in the home straight.
NAMBAWAN – steadied near the 800m when CUPPA TEA LOVE shifted in when not fully clear. S. Bayliss (CUPPA TEA LOVE) was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.
CUPPA TEA LOVE – bumped and became unbalanced near the 600m. Checked and lost ground near the 500m.
CHEAPER FOR CASH – improved onto heels near the 100m and was steadied. When asked to comment on the performance, rider R. Kerwin stated that the mare was beaten for early speed and raced with a high head action. She added that she checked her mount near the 500m and shifted wider on the track when avoiding CUPPA TEA LOVE which had contacted the rail and shifted out, which resulted in her mount losing some momentum at that point. She further added that due to her mounts high head action she pressured it hands and heels from the 400m. She further added that her mount ran on well in the home straight and felt that the mare would be better suited to races over further distance.
Race 2: National Jockeys Celebration Day Class 3 Plate 1000m
The start of this race was delayed due to REALEE proving difficult to load. Trainer S. McEwan was advised that a warning would be placed on the barrier manners of that mare.
MRS ASIA – raced wide throughout.
MODEST OPTION – when asked to comment on the performance, rider G. Snowden stated that he obtained a position behind the speed and travelled well until the 600m.
