STEWARDS REPORT

GYMPIE TURF CLUB – SATURDAY, 24TH OCTOBER 2009

WEATHER – Fine TRACK RATING – Sand RAIL – True

OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – Mr I. Brown
Stewards – Mr W. Moore
Starter – Mr M. Bailey
Clerk of Scales – Mr K. Dowling
Judge – Mr C. Jeffrey
Veterinarian – Dr T. Fisher

Race 1: Action Ford Class B Handicap – 1450 metres:
1st – Quite Stylish 2nd - Prince of Freeze 3rd - So Long 4th - Very Tricky

CRAIGLEA KING (L. Appo) slipped on jumping away and lost considerable ground. A warning was placed on the gelding’s barrier manners.

VERY TRICKY (M. Morris) began awkwardly.

QUITE STYLISH (K. Cross) and PRINCE OF FREEZE (Y. Yeung Ki) raced wide in the early stages.

LITTLE BOBBY (M. Heagney) raced wide for the majority of the race.

L. Appo stated that after beginning badly he had concerns with the action of CRAIGLEA KING as the gelding was reluctant to stretch out. As a consequence he was reluctant to place the CRAIGLEA KING under pressure from the 600m. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 2: Action Nissan & KIA QTIS Maiden Plate – 1150 metres:
1st – All Diehard 2nd – Midnightmare 3rd – Likaphantom 4th – Lord Danseur

LORD DANSEUR was presented to race in blinkers which was not advertised as part the colt’s racing gear. Trainer M. Cochrane advised stewards that he had made the required gear change to add blinkers. Stewards therefore allowed LORD DANSEUR to race in blinkers and an announcement noting the late gear change was made by the race announcer prior to the start of the race. An inquiry into the gear discrepancy was adjourned.

ADINI (C. Priest) became very fractious in the barriers. Trainer D. Gafa was advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding with regards to its barrier manners.

ADINI and SWIFT CASH (I. Coombes) were both slow to begin.

SWIFT CASH and JOVIAL JOKE (A. Smith) raced wide in the early stages.

Trainer D. Gafa advised that after beginning slowly ADINI was reluctant to stretch out and may have failed to handle the sand surface.

Race 3: Action Mitsubishi & Subaru Class 3 Plate - 1150 metres:
1st – Frenardi 2nd – Hayil And Hearty 3rd – Mr Wang 4th – Krisalo

S. Bayliss replaced D. Tarrant, who was indisposed due to illness, as the rider of Kopataroa.

FRENARDI (I. Coombes) and KRISALO (G. Butler) brushed on jumping.

LADY IN SEQUENCE (M. Heagney) and CIRCUMNAVIGATE (K. Mizobe) raced wide throughout.

When questioned as to the tactics adopted on CIRCUMNAVIGATE, specifically why he elected to stay wide instead of taking cover jockey K. Mizobe stated that in the past CIRCUMNAVIGATE had resented racing in the kickback and thus he elected to remain wide. Trainer B. Gill was at a loss to explain the disappointing performance of CIRCUMNAVIGATE and advised that the mare would now be sent for a spell. Mr. Gill undertook to advise stewards should anything come to light subsequent to the event that might explain the mare’s poor performance.

When questioned as to the tactics adopted on MR WANG, jockey M. Morris stated that in the early stages of the race the horse was awkward on the sand surface and as a consequence was unable to keep pace with the main body of the field. M. Morris further stated that at a point near the 600m the gelding started to feel much more comfortable on the surface and as a consequence was able to finish off the race well. It was also noted that MR WANG was first up today and may have been disadvantaged by the short distance of today’s race.

Race 4: Tattersall’s Racing Club Maiden Plate - 850 metres:
1st – Challoman 2nd – Midnight Agenda 3rd – Secret Will 4th – Adangertohimself

QUEEN KANLAYA (R. Hancock) jumped in the air as the start was effected and lost ground. Trainer K. Munce was advised that a warning would be placed on the mare’s record.

EARLSTOUN LASS (M. Heagney) was slow to begin.

VISONA GOLD (L. Appo) had to be checked when tightened for room shortly after the start between INTHELIGHT (M. Morris) and CHALLOMAN (I. Coombes) both of which shifted ground.

VISONA GOLD raced wide for the majority of the event.

Race 5: Connolly’s Newsexpress Open Handicap – 850 metres:
1st – Zahbaj 2nd – Ring Ring 3rd – Final Crunch 4th – Arhondas

MORCOMBE (T. Banks) was slow to begin.

RING RING (L. Appo) had to be steadied shortly after the start when tightened for room between HAIZUM (K. Cross) and ROSIE’S BOY (S. Bayliss) which was taken out by HAYLERGAL (C. Priest).

Jockey T. Banks advised that MORCOMBE may have failed to handle the sand surface which contributed to its disappointing performance.

Race 6: Action Auto Group Gympie Cup Open Handicap – 1600 metres:
1st – Nevada Gambler 2nd – Red Shadow 3rd – Red Roller 4th – Seekawinner

SEEKAWINNER (K. Mizobe) and SNOW DESTINY (A. Kitson) were both slow to begin.

NEVADA GAMBLER (D. McWhinney) began awkwardly.

SEEKAWINNER raced wide for the majority of the event.

MULGA BOB (M. Heagney) had to be checked when tightened for room between LEVERAGE (R. Hancock) and RED ROLLER (K. Cross) which shifted out to avoid the heels of RED SHADOW (S. Bayliss). App. K. Cross was reprimanded for allowing RED ROLLER to shift out when insufficiently clear of MULGA BOB.

Trainer S. Thomas advised that MULGA BOB which compounded badly from the 800m had failed to handle the sand surface in its 5 previous starts on the surface. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

At the completion of today's program Stewards heard a complaint lodged by a Mr. Ian Davies against licenced bookmaker Noel Nelson with regards to a dishonoured wager. After hearing the complaint and submissions from Mr. Nelson it could not be verified that the wager, alleged by Mr. Davies, had been placed with Mr. Nelson and as such no action was taken. However, Mr. Nelson was asked to ensure clerk's in his employ were more careful when accepting wagers in the future.

ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
