STEWARDS REPORT

GYMPIE TURF CLUB – 25 JUNE 2011

WEATHER – FINE TRACK RATING – SAND RAIL - TRUE

OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – S. Fletcher
Stewards – W. Moore
Clerk of Scales – K. Downing
Judge – C. Jeffrey
Veterinarian – T. Fisher
Starter – M. Bailey

Race 1: Vietnam Vets Maiden Plate 850m
1st – Our Boy Malachi 2nd – Falfario 3rd – Otago 4th – Sanzida

MEDWIN (D. McWhinney) reared at the start and lost ground.

J. Hoopert reported that OTAGO commenced to over race as a result of the kickback from the track approaching the 600m, and a short distance later, changed stride and blundered which resulted in the horse becoming unbalanced and losing ground.

Stewards inquired into an incident near the 300m in which OTAGO was checked. After considering the evidence, it was established that OTAGO improved quickly up behind SANZIDA (D. Gill) and then hung out and had to be checked from that runners heels which shifted in slightly at that point after being bumped by CAN HE GO (G. Goold).

FALFARIO (I. Coombes) raced wide throughout.

Race 2: RSL Snooker Club Class 4 Handicap 1030m
1st – Bella Sea 2nd – Mands Bond 3rd – Swift Cash 4th – El Code

Correct weight was delayed when K. Munce trainer of third placed SWIFT CASH made application to view the judge’s official print for second and third. On taking evidence from the judge Mr C. Jeffrey, he informed stewards that the photo finish equipment had malfunctioned and that he was not able to provide an official print for third. He added that he had judged the placing’s on viewing the race from the judges box and then sought to use the official race film to assist him in confirming the placing’s. Evidence was also taken from apprentice S. Wiseman and viewing of the official race day video. Stewards on considering the evidence and acting under the provisions of AR 156(1) were satisfied with the judges placing’s and declared correct weight on the semaphored numbers.

MANDS BOND (C. Kearney) was slow into stride and lost ground.

MIO AMICO (I. Coombes) and EL CONDE (M. Hughes) raced wide throughout.

Stewards questioned S. Wiseman regarding her riding of SWIFT CASH in the straight. S. Wiseman stated that SWIFT CASH had raced wide from the 600m and in the straight rode hands and heels in accordance with her instructions and did not use the whip as she was informed that the mare does not appreciate it. Trainer K. Munce confirmed the instructions and added that SWIFT CASH in fact resents the whip and does not produce an effort when being struck with the whip. Stewards in considering the evidence accepted the explanation of both S. Wiseman and K. Munce and were also mindful of S. Wiseman’s relative inexperience. In the circumstances stewards reminded S. Wiseman that she should ride her mounts out in a manner so as not to leave herself open to question.

Race 3: RSL Social Bowls & Darts QTIS Maiden Plate 1170m
1st – Break The Blues 2nd – Leica Fuse 3rd – Golden Sera 4th – God She’s Raunchy

GOD SHE’S RAUNCHY (S. Wiseman) raced wide from the 600m.

Stewards sought an explanation from K. Pedron regarding the performance of JORJA’S DRAGON which finished a distant last. K. Pedron stated that the filly, which was having its first start, resented the kick back and would not stretch out and raced greenly throughout. Trainer J. Curtain stated that he had given JORJA’S DRAGON two trials prior to racing and could only offer that the filly would be better suited after being given time to mature and that he would now send the filly for an immediate spell. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any obvious abnormalities. Subsequent to the event, trainer J. Curtain contacted stewards and informed them that JORJA’S DRAGON had pulled up shin sore in both forelegs, on the undertaking from the trainer that the filly would be immediately spelled, stewards took no further action.

When asked to explain the improved performance of BREAK THE BLUES, trainer J. Curtain stated that BREAK THE BLUES had over raced at its first run from a spell and as a result he removed the blinkers in attempt to get the filly to settle. While admitting that the win today had surprised him, he believed that the gear change and a recent trial had benefitted the filly leading into today’s race.

Race 4: RSL Sub Branch Class B Handicap 1170m
1st – Uston 2nd – Magic Turbo 3rd – Craiglea Spartan 4th – Tedonta

MONASKI (S. Wiseman) began awkwardly.

CRAIGLEA SPARTON, TEDONTA (B. Hull) and BONAFIDE RASCAL (M. Hughes) raced wide throughout.

Stewards sought an explanation from S. Wiseman regarding the disappointing performance of MONASKI. S. Wiseman stated that MONASKI had lost its footing on jumping away and then threw its head back striking her in the face which dazed her and resulted in the filly settling at the tail of the field. She added that her mount was not comfortable with the kickback from the track and felt MONASKI is better suited when able to be ridden forward as she had done at the most previous start when successful. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities. Subsequent to the event, trainer G. Grainger contacted stewards and notified them that MONASKI had pulled up sore in the off fore leg. Stewards advised G.
