SUPPLEMENTARY REPORTS:
Stewards interviewed trainer Mr B. Gill to ascertain the circumstances around the entry, acceptance and subsequent scratching of FINAL CRUNCH from the Gympie Cup. Mr Gill stated that he intended to race Final Crunch in the 1600m race despite the fact the gelding had not competed over that distance prior, as it was on the track where he was trained and he believes Final Crunch is capable of running in races over 1600m as he is getting older and settling better. Mr Gill also added that he would have liked to have two runners in the race being that the Gympie Cup is the main race of the year in his home town and it has sentimental value to him. He stated however, that once Final Crunch had drawn the widest barrier in the field, he believed he may not run out a strong 1600m as he would either have to be pressured out of the gates to obtain a position on the pace, or would get too far back in the field to figure in the finish and decided on withdrawing him from the race. Stewards accepted the explanation.
Race 1: Gympie Regional Council Class B H’cap – 1470m
1st – Stalwart Reign 2nd – Liberty’s Magic 3rd – Craiglea Romeo 4th – Alriodane
LIBERTY’S MAGIC (T. O’Hara) was slow into stride.
ALRIODANE (App E. O’Connell) raced wide until obtaining a position outside the leader near the 600m.
Leaving the 400m ALRIODANE shifted in slightly under pressure tightening the running of INTHANON (App R. Jamieson) which was forced to shift out around that horses heels to obtain clear running. Apprentice O’Connell was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances in future.
Jockey M. Hughes was afforded the opportunity to explain LENTINI MIST’s below market expectations performance; he stated that the mare travelled well until placed under pressure near the 600m where she failed to respond to his riding.
Race 2: Life Members QTIS Mdn Plt – 1170m
1st – Izachamp 2nd – What a Tycoon 3rd – Falfario 4th – Windborne
CYCLONE BILLY (T. O’Hara) and IZACHAMP (App S. Wiseman), which were both slow to begin, bumped at the start.
UPTOWN EAGLE (App K. Gates) and WINDBORNE (App E. O’Connell) were slow to begin.
Approximately 50m after the start, STRIKE A POSE attempted to buck, dislodging apprentice J. King. App King was attended to by the on-course ambulance officers who reported that he had not appeared to suffer any serious damage in the fall but advised him to see his G.P. to get a complete check. App King was advised that he must obtain a medical certificate clearing him to resume riding prior to his next race ride. The trainer of STRIKE A POSE, Mr M. Lakey was advised that the filly must compete in an official trial to steward’s satisfaction prior to her next race start.
UPTOWN EAGLE was restrained and shifted out near the 1100m to avoid the fallen rider.
GEMS TATT (App D. McWhinney), IZACHAMP, CYCLONE BILLY and WINDBORNE all raced wide in the early stages.
When questioned regarding the below market expectations performance of OUR BOY BILL, jockey D. Gill stated that she believed the gelding resented the tongue-tie today as it was unusually stirred-up behind the barriers prior to the race and did not race as well as she believes it can at any stage of the event.
Race 3: Tattersalls Racing Club Class 4 H’cap – 1170m
1st – Stalwart Emma 2nd – Challoman 3rd – All Kiwi 4th – Coen
WHIMPY (L. Henry) and CHALLOMAN (App E. O’Connell) were both slow to begin.
STALWART EMMA (App G. Goold), ALL KIWI (I. Coombes) and WHIMPY all raced wide in the early stages.
A post-race veterinary examination of DESTINY PARTNERS which trailed the field throughout did not reveal any abnormalities. App K. Gates, the rider of DESTINY PARTNERS, reported that the gelding did not travel well at any stage of the event and in her opinion was not comfortable on the sand surface.
Race 4: Alan Lobb Memorial Class 2 H’cap – 850m
1st – Al Chicago 2nd – Craiglea Cobra 3rd – She’ll be Dancing 4th – Riviera Moss
THEREABOUTS (C. Kearney) began awkwardly and lost ground as a result.

Race 6: Action Auto Group Gympie Cup Open H’cap – 1600m
1st – Craiglea Blondie 2nd – Harney 3rd – Che Casino 4th – El Conde
The start of this race was delayed to avoid a clash with the Cox Plate.
SLEPNER (App G. Goold) blundered at the start.
LILY OF THE FIELD (C. Kearney) and ARABIA (L. Henry) bumped at the start.
HARNEY (D. Gill) was inclined to lay-in passing the winning post on the first occasion.
CHE CASINO (T. O’Hara) over-raced from the 1400m and was forced to shift out at the first turn to avoid the heels of CRAIGLEA BLONDIE (App E. O’Connell) and LILY OF THE FIELD forcing ARABIA and SLEPNER out wider. CHE CASINO continued to over-race and raced wide from that point until nearing the 800m.
SLEPNER raced wide throughout.
