RACE 1:.OPEN HANDICAP – 1460 Metres
At the 550 metres NEXT IN LINE shifted out around the heels of MR MO to improve and as a result RED BERRY LAND (A Molino) clipped the heels of NEXT IN LINE, blundered, and almost fell. At an Inquiry, Jockey S Simon (NEXT IN LINE) was found Guilty of contravening AR 137 (a) by riding in a Careless manner by allowing NEXT IN LINE to shift out when not clear. Jockey Simon was suspended from riding in races to commence midnight 14/1/03 up to and including 14/2/03 (1 month). In accessing penalty the Stewards took into account the degree of carelessness shown by Jockey Simon and also his poor race record in relation to careless riding. RED BERRY LANE was examined by the Club Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities. Trainer R Bradshaw (NEXT IN LINE) was questioned regarding the improved performance of NEXT IN LINE in winning today’s event in track record time in comparison to the horse’s two previous starts at Townsville on 20/12/02 and in Mackay 28/12/02 when NEXT IN LINE finished in last position. Mr Bradshaw advised that he had freshened NEXT IN LINE up for to-days start and had eased up on the horses track work. He also advised that the fast early pace set by INIGO STORM had suited NEXT IN LINE and that he had instructed Jockey Simon to urge the horse forward from the 800 metre point. Mr Bradshaw stated that NEXT IN LINE is a horse that has on occasions in the past, mixed his form. The Stewards noted the explanation of Trainer Bradshaw, however, advised him of the need for NEXT IN LINE to race in a consistent manner. INIGO STORM returned to scale lame in the near fore leg as a result of damage to the tendon. A Veterinary certificate of fitness will be required before INIGO STORM can race again.
