D’ Avila stated that WANT TO WIN took up a handy position and travelled comfortably in the early stages, however when he placed the gelding under pressure leaving the 400 metres it failed to respond to his riding and weakened badly. Jockey D’ Avila further stated that in his opinion WANT TO WIN would be better suited racing without blinkers as it did in today’s event. Trainer B. Condon agreed with the comments of jockey D’ Avila and will experiment with gear changes prior to WANT TO WIN’s next start. MELAINA ROSE (W. D’ Avila) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn.
When questioned as to the tactics adopted on WINXAAHEART, which raced in a position at the rear of the field, in contrast to the forward position taken up at its previous start, Jockey M. Cullen stated that his instructions were to settle the gelding midfield as WINXAARHEART had shown a tendency to over-race at its previous start. Jockey Cullen further added that he placed the gelding under pressure near the 400 metres at which point the gelding finished the race off well. Jockey Cullen was of the view that WINZAAHEART which performed better today when allowed to settle midfield as it was not inclined to over-race should be ridden in a similar manner in furture. Trainer D. Paradise confirmed the instructions and stated that WINXAARHEART would be ridden in a midfield position in future. Stewards reminded Mr Paradise of his obligation to inform them of any perceived change in riding tactics. Stewards noted the comments.
