WEATHER - SHOWERY TRACK - GOOD/DEAD AT 10.45 A.M. RAIL - 5M. ALL TRACK
RACE 1: SCHWEPPES COLA H'CAP - 800M.
After travelling a short distance, STORMY BLUE had to be steadied off the heels of BENLANE, which was taken in by ROLLTON.
S. Nolen reported that after being tightened for room after travelling a short distance, STORMY BLUE did not feel entirely comfortable in the going and dipped on a couple of occasions.
ROLLTON, which haemorrhaged from both nostrils during the event, will be barred from racing for a period of 3 months. A swab sample was taken from ROLLTON.
RACE 2: XXXX BITTER H'CAP - 1100M.
COSMIC STORM was a late scratching at approximately 12.59 p.m. when it was found that the gelding was not shod in accordance with the rules [AR 141 A(d)]. Following the late withdrawal, all monies invested on COSMIC STORM were ordered to be refunded in full, with deductions made in accordance with the Racing and Betting Act, i.e. 6 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 7 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets, applicable to successful wagers placed prior to the withdrawal time. After hearing evidence from trainer J. Gleeson in relation to the shoeing of the horse, stewards imposed a fine of $100 for failing to ensure that the horse was shod in accordance with the rules.
Passing the 800m., MIDNIGHT WARRIOR and HALLETS ROAD made contact.
Approaching the 50m., CROSSEE shifted out abruptly when the gelding appeared to resent being struck with the whip.
A veterinary examination of MIDNIGHT WARRIOR following this race revealed the horse had pulled up lame in the off hind.
RACE 3: SCHWEPPES SOLO H'CAP - 1200M.
Trainer R. Heathcote was fined $50 for nominating SNAPPY AFFAIR for this race, a maiden for 3-year-olds, when ineligible.
PASSING TIME was slow to begin.
MALLEE FIRE, which jumped away awkwardly, dipped after travelling a short distance.
RACE 4: XXXX GOLD H'CAP - 2150M.
NEDSYND was slow to begin.
RACE 5: SCHWEPPES DIET COLA H'CAP - 1000M.
A. Baker, rider of ASHTON ROSE, was found guilty of careless riding, in that he permitted his mount to shift in after passing the 800m. when not sufficiently clear of ANNO DOMINI, which resulted in S. Seamer, rider of ANNO DOMINI, having to check his mount. A. Baker was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 10 meetings, to commence at midnight, 30 July, and to expire at midnight, 13 August 2000.
ASHTON ROSE shifted ground appreciably over the concluding stages of the race.
RACE 6: XXXX LIGHT H'CAP - 1350M.
VIRGO'S BROTHER and JUST GUS were slow to begin.
Near the 1200m., SUDDEN TREASURE had to be steadied to avoid the heels of METROPALIS, which shifted in.
After passing the 1000m., GOD'S EYES became unbalanced and got its head up when being checked off the heels of METROPALIS when the paced slowed. JUST GUS, which was trailing GOD'S EYES, raced untractably when being checked off that horse's heels and shifted out, enabling KENNIAN to improve to the inside. Following an inquiry, stewards found that whilst GOD'S EYES and JUST GUS were inclined to overrace, A. Baker, rider of METROPALIS, was nonetheless reprimanded for abruptly reducing the pace of his horse, resulting in GOD'S EYES and JUST GUS racing ungenerously. Shortly after this incident, GOD'S EYES hung out and continued to do so for the remainder of the race. A warning was issued to the connections of GOD'S EYES in relation to its racing manners.
In the vicinity of the 450m., METROPALIS, when racing in restricted room inside of SUDDEN TREASURE, had to be steadied by its rider when SUDDEN TREASURE shifted in and as a result became unbalanced and shifted out on to the hind quarters of SUDDEN TREASURE. Following an inquiry, D. Craven, rider of SUDDEN TREASURE, was instructed to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
SUDDEN TREASURE was inclined to shift out under pressure in the run to the finish.
RACE 7: SCHWEPPES GINGER ALE H'CAP - 1200M.
M. Cahill was examined by the club's doctor after riding in race 6 and was replaced by D. Craven on SPRIGHTLY LIGHT and W.J. Cook on SULIMANALU.
MAJESTIC RHYTHM was slow to begin.
DANE BEAUTY jumped awkwardly and lost ground at the start.
RACE 8: XXXX DRAUGHT H'CAP - 1200M.
After leaving the 900m., GUIDANCE had to be steadied to avoid the heels of OUT OF PARIS, which shifted in.
Approaching the 800m., QUICK PRINCE was tightened for room between ARMED ALERT and SULIMANALU as a result of both horses shifting ground.
ALL WINNERS AND ROLLTON WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
