As C. Spry was indisposed, N. Evans was substituted as the rider of ARGENTIC.

SUMMIT CITY jumped awkwardly and shifted in and brushed MERLOOM.

RIGHTO also jumped away awkwardly.

CHERMOULA was slow to begin.

Near the 230m., MERLOOM had to be steadied off the heels of SON OF INTEGRA.
S. Seamer, rider of RIGHTO, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that he directed his mount out making the home turn when insufficiently clear, making heavy contact with STEEL MAIZ, resulting in STEEL MAIZ being forced out onto CHOP CHOP, which in turn brushed CHERMOULA. S. Seamer was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 6 meetings, to commence at midnight, 7 May, and to expire at midnight, 17 May 2001. In assessing penalty, stewards took into account S.Seamer's race riding record.

For some distance approaching the 1400m., SEATTLE STRIKE raced fiercely when being restrained.

RACE 6: IPSWICH POWDER COATING H'CAP - 1350M.

POSCOH, which was kicked when proceeding to the barriers, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.

POSCOH was slow to begin.

J. Walk was questioned as to his riding of POSCOH in the middle stages. J. Walk stated that after eing slowly away, the gelding failed to handle the conditions close to the rail near the 800m. and had to be steadied off the heels of SABAI SABAI and blundered, however when placed under pressure in the straight the horse responded to his riding. J. Walk was advised that in similar circumstances he would be expected to make an effort to improve his position sooner than he did on this occasion.

RACE 7: JOHN STACEY ELECTRICAL H'CAP - 1023M.

As G. Colless was to be overweight, J. Byrne was substituted as the rider of WILLY THE KID, and A. Baker as the rider of ALPINE WHISTLER (Race 9). G. Colless was fined the sum of $200.

An inquiry was opened into interference suffered by YALAH CITY and PLAY THE ACE near the 800m.. Evidence was taken from J. Byrne (WILLY THE KID), S. Galloway (NORTHERN CRUSADER), N. Tomizawa (PEDRO'S EXPRESS), A. Cowie (ARNAGE) and A. Baker (YES DOES). The inquiry was then adjourned to a date to be fixed to enable A. Morrison (PLAY THE ACE) and N. Evans (YALLAH CITY), who had been transported to hospital following falls in race 8, to give evidence. In this incident, YALLAH CITY clipped the heels of NORTHERN CRUSADER and blundered. A short distance later, CENTONA shifted in and clipped the heels of ARNAGE and blundered.

RACE 8: SMORGAN ARC H'CAP - 1023M.

As S. Morris was to be overweight, N. Tomizawa was substituted as the rider of SUNSET CROWN.

Due to transport difficulties, N. Jolly was unable to fulfil his engagement on RAW AND RACY and was replaced by A. Baker.

An inquiry was opened into the reason for SAHARA REGENT (A. Morrison) and KELJUNE (N. Evans) falling near the 400m.. Evidence was taken from D. Green (JUST POTCH), N. Tomizawa (SUNSET CROWN), Z. Purton (ON THE RUN), N. Spencer (AVON JEWEL) and J. Byrne (FIDDLER FROM CHINA). The inquiry was adjourned to enable N. Evans and A. Morrison, who were transported to hospital, to give evidence. After being recaptured following the fall, it was observed that SAHARA REGENT was bleeding from both nostrils. On the observations of the stewards and from the video footage, and in consultation with the club's veterinary surgeon, stewards were of the opinion that the bleeding occurred due to injuries sustained during the fall and therefore SAHARA REGENT was not declared a bleeder.

RACE 9: EASTERN SUBURBS HARDWARE H'CAP - 1200M.

N. Evans, who was indisposed following the fall in race 8, was replaced by N. Tomizawa as the rider of PISANI BAY.

LADY SHERPA jumped awkwardly.

POCKETSFIL were slow to begin.

Near the 1100m., TELEBAN shifted in, taking PISANI BAY in on to I SEE RED, causing I SEE RED to be tightened. A short distance later, DON'T SAY GOODBYE shifted out, taking MILLENNIUM BELLE onto I SEE RED, causing that horse to be further hampered when tightened for room.

Near the 400m., ALPINE WHISTLER, improved quickly between SO LIKE BEAU and LADY SHERPA where there was insufficient room, and as a result made contact with LADY SHERPA, causing that horse to be checked. A. Baker, rider of ALPINE WHISTLER, was given the benefit of the doubt as to whether he was fully responsible for the incident as ALPINE WHISTLER had a tendency to overrace.

A. Baker was further questioned as to why he did not improve on ALPINE WHISTLER after leaving the 400m. until the 200m.. A. Baker stated he had been instructed not to go wide on the gelding and to endeavor to obtain runs to the inside. His explanation was noted.

A veterinary examination of ALPINE WHISTLER revealed the gelding had been galloped on on the near fore pastern.

ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
