IPSWICH TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT FRI.15.8.03

STEWARDS PANEL: Mr C. Clifford (Chairman), Mr A. Reardon, Mr G. Hargraves, Mr D. Collingwood.

WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD RAIL - TRUE POSITION


RACE 1: STACEY ELECTRICS H'CAP - 800M.

CRAIGLEA WINGS was slow to begin.

CAFÉ FAITOLE jumped awkwardly and shifted out abruptly.

KNOW HOW raced awkwardly approaching the home turn.

Making the home turn, KAZAKING and NITROGLYCERINE made heavy contact.


RACE 2: IPSWICH CITY COUNCIL H'CAP - 1000M.

No racing incidents.


RACE 3: VODOFONE H'CAP - 1100M.

As N. Jolly was indisposed, M. Pelling was substituted as the rider of ARTISTIC PRINCE.

SMART ZONE was slow to begin.

TEAL, which was slow to begin, had to be steadied shortly after off the heels of KALINGA PET, which shifted out.

Shortly after the start, ARTISTIC PRINCE shifted out, taking SMART ZONE out on to MEXICALI ROSE.

Approaching the 1000m., RADOMA shifted out and made contact with KALINGA PET.

Passing the 800m., when the pace slackened, ARTISTIC PRINCE commenced to overrace and shifted out around the heels of KING JON JON, which resulted in MEXICALI ROSE being tightened for room. SEQUALO JOY, which was following, had to be severely checked and lost ground. RADOMA, which was also checked as a consequence of this incident, was then obliged to race wide for the remainder of the event.

RACE 4: VODOFONE LIVE H'CAP - 1666M.

For a short distance in the early stages of the straight, ZACOBBA was held up for clear running.

Trainer A. Cowell was questioned regarding the improved performance of CANALETTO as compared with the geldings last of 11 at the Sunshine Coast on 10 August. A. Cowell stated that at its last start the pace was slow early and the field sprinted from the 600m. to the finish. He added that CANALETTO was unable to sustain the sprint, however in finishing last he was not disappointed in the run as, in his opinion, the gelding is better suited with the pace on throughout the race. A. Cowell's comments were noted.

Stewards questioned jockey D. Craven in regard to the tactics adopted on TWICKENHAM in today's event. D. Craven stated that it was his intention to lead as he and trainer H. Norman were of the belief there would not be any pace in the race. He further advised that if TWICKENHAM is restrained it commences to overrace, and for that reason it was his intention to allow the gelding to bowl along in front at its own pace.


RACE 5: VODAFONE BUSINESS PLANS H'CAP - 1350M.

As M. Dale was indisposed, A. Erhart was substituted as the rider of SPECIAL JEUNEY.

BRUNT, which reared over in the barrier, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and declared a late scratching at 3.04 p.m.. SHEOAKS, which was in the adjoining stall to BRUNT, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. Subsequent to the event, all monies invested on BRUNT were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 33 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets,21 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets, applicable to successful wagers placed prior to the withdrawal time. The connections of BRUNT were advised that the gelding must passing a barrier test prior to its next race start.

PICCOLO PRINCESS was slow to begin.

Approaching the 500m. REMEMBER ROBIN had to be steadied when SAMS ADVICE shifted in. R. Morris, rider of SAMS ADVICE, was reminded of his obligations to provide sufficient room when shifting ground.

Near the 500m., BRAVE RETURN had to be steadied off the heels of PICCOLO PRINCESS which shifted out.

PICCOLO PRINCESS was held up for clear running rounding the home turn, then shifted in abruptly near the 200m.. PICCOLO PRINCESS was then inclined to lay in on several occasions over the concluding stages, preventing L. Morrison from fully testing that mare.

BRAVE RETURN had to be checked off the heels of the tiring TILES near the 200m..

PERVIN was obliged to race wide throughout the event, and after entering the straight shifted out under pressure.


RACE 6: VODAFONE NO-PLANS H'CAP - 1350M.

Due to transport difficulties, D. Gill was unable to fulfill her engagement on RESERVE RAIDER and was substituted by R. Morris.

MIRROR was slow to jump and lost considerable ground.

Approaching the 100m., HURCZ shifted out to improve, which resulted in SUMMER WALTZ having to be steadied.




RACE 7: QUEENSLAND TIMES H'CAP - 1200M.

Due to transport difficulties, B. Albuino was unable to fulfill his engagement on VICKI JOY and was replaced by M. Spriggs.

Stewards questioned D. Ballard in regard to the riding tactics he adopted on MIGHTY BLAZE as compared to those when the gelding competed at Doomben on 6 August. D. Ballard stated it was not his intention to lead on that occasion, however after beginning well, and with no early pace, MIGHTY BLAZE led. He added that after being joined by MIXADAD at the 800m., the gelding was under pressure and only responded fairly. D. Ballard further stated that after consultation with trainer A. Bailey this morning it was decided that MIGHTY BLAZE, from its wide barrier, should be allowed to settle and endeavor to find a position closer to the fence, similar to how it had been ridden at the Gold Coast on 26 July. He also believed that the addition of a tongue-tie, in his opinion, may have improved the horse's performance today. The comments were noted.

RAFSO was momentarily held up for clear running on straightening.

Passing the 150m., IN THE JUDGE'S BOX was held up for clear running between FAIR RALEIGH and CABARU QUEEN. A short distance later, the tiring CABARU QUEEN shifted in, taking IN THE JUDGE'S BOX across the heels of FAIR RALEIGH.


RACE 8: XXXX AS GOOD AS GOLD H'CAP - 1000M.

REGAL DRAW was slow to begin.

Leaving the 600m., REGAL DRAW was unable to improve when racing between ILSOBAR and SWEET CHARLOTTE, then after leaving the 500m. had to be restrained off the heels of QUICK BALL. REGAL DRAW was then held up for clear running rounding the home turn.

Passing the 200m., ILSOBAR had to be steadied off the heels of GLENCOGAN STAR.

PENCIL and OUR ACE were both obliged to race wide throughout the race.


ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
