SUPPLEMENTARY REPORTS:
At the Gold Coast on 2 April 2004, BUCKO was presented with a tongue-tie when such gear did not appear on its records. An inquiry into this matter was adjourned to make further investigations. Trainer Mrs S. Birney was severely reprimanded and advised that a repetition may lead to her being penalised.
Stewards opened an inquiry into the acceptance of riding engagements for jockeys C. Spry and N. Jolly by Mr Jason Doyle, who has no registration as a rider's agent with Queensland Racing. After taking evidence from C. Spry and J. Doyle, the inquiry was adjourned until 10 a.m. on Thursday, 24 April at Deagon to enable further evidence to be provided.
Race 1: Sky Channel Live Racing Maiden H'cap - 2150m.
1st - Miss Umatilla 2nd - Extinguisher 3rd - Mighty Natural 4th - Little Dimple
RAPID LOVER, which sustained an abrasion to its near hind hip travelling to the course, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.
MIGHTY NATURAL (P. Hammersley) jumped away awkwardly.
MOMENTS LIKE THESE (D. Coleman) jumped outwards at the start and made contact with PIC 'N' MIX (S. Katsidis).
LITTLE DIMPLE (A. Parramore) was slow to begin.
PIC 'N' MIX was forced to race wide in the early stages.
After leaving the 600m., MOMENTS LIKE THESE was placed in restricted room between MIGHTY NATURAL and EXTINGUISHER (J. Sharp), which shifted out slightly.
Near the 450m., LITTLE DIMPLE shifted out to improve and made contact with MISS UMATILLA (A. Best).
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of LUCKIEST, M. Cahill stated that the filly was under pressure at the 600m. and, in his opinion, failed to run out the distance of today's event. A post-race veterinary examination of LUCKIEST failed to reveal any abnormality.
Race 2: WWW.Skychannel.com.au 3yo H'cap - 1500m.
1st - Coronation Star 2nd - Branch 3rd - Piercing Eyes 4th - Whitesock Lass
WHITESOCK LASS (J. Murphy) was hampered on jumping away between PIERCING EYES (J. Sharp) and RAPID SPUR (A. Merritt), which jumped away awkwardly and shifted out.
Shortly after the start, CORONATION STAR (M. Pelling) had to be steadied off the heels of BRANCH (T.Pannell) when being taken out by LAND SHARK (G. Baker).
Near the 500m., BRANCH had to be steadied to avoid the heels of CORONATION STAR, which shifted in slightly.
Race 3: Our Eye Liner Function Centre Class 3 H'cap - 1200m.
1st - Solid As A Rock 2nd - Trojan Star 3rd - Heaven's Quest 4th - Mister Raw
Following a heavy shower of run during the running of this race, the track rating was downgraded to dead for race 4.
No racing incidents.
Race 4: City Pacific Finance Maiden H'cap - 1200m.
1st - Skip On By 2nd - Winegrove 3rd - Anti Venom 4th - Shani's Crown
The start was delayed when GRAND SAUVAGE required farrier attention after casting its off fore plate when proceeding to the barriers.
TIVOLI THEATRE (D. Tarrant), which jumped in the air at the start, was then crowded for room between WINEGROVE (P. Hammersley) and GRAND SAUVAGE (M. Pelling), which shifted out.
Approaching the 800m., GRAND SAUVAGE (M. Pelling) had to be steadied off the heels of SPYBOY.
TRAVEMONDE was forced to race wide throughout.
Race 5: Queensland Times, Our Local News 3yo & Up Maiden Plate - 800m.
1st - Ancient Storm 2nd - Glenisla Girl 3rd - Magical Rain 4th - Mister Knight
GLENISLA GIRL (S. Galloway), CANADIAN CRYSTAL (M. Cullen), MISS MINSK (C. Pay) and PERFECT GYPSY were all slow to begin.
MAGICAL RAIN (M. Deguara) jumped away awkwardly.
Near the 500m., BOGGA YOUNG (S. Apthorpe), which was racing ungenerously, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of MISS MINSK, which shifted out.
Rounding the home turn, MISS MINSK shifted out and made contact with the hind quarters of SPEED MISS (R. Pittman)
ANCIENT STORM was momentarily held up for clear running rounding the home turn.
MISTER KNIGHT (A. Ware) was inclined to lay in over the concluding stages when placed under pressure.
Race 6: Enjoy A Schweppes Lemonade Class 2 H'cap - 1000m.
1st - Blushing Dane 2nd - Sky Lyric 3rd - Wrong Dane 4th - Fine Kas
EBONY SMILE was a late scratching at 7.55 a.m.. Stewards intend to interview trainer J. Atkins at a later date as to the late withdrawal.
CENQUALO (R. Goltz) and BLUSHING DANE (A. Best) came together on jumping away.
Race 7: Yalumba Wines Class 1 H'cap - 1350m.
1st - Clangover 2nd - Mesque's Magique 3rd - Nevada Inn 4th - Finlarig
M. Cahill was examined by the club's doctor after riding in race 4 and stood down from his engagements on BOBBIE BELLE and JOALING (Race 8). A. Merritt was substituted as the rider of BOBBIE BELLE, and as no other senior rider was available, stewards permitted D. Green to ride JOALING half a kilogram over its declare weight.
DECIBEEL, which was fractious in the barriers, was declared a late scratching on veterinary advice at 4.12 p.m.. Subsequent to the event, all monies invested on DECIBEEL were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 33 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 21 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets, applicable to successful wagers placed prior to the withdrawal time. Trainer A. Bailey's representative Mrs S. Thomson was advised that a warning was being placed on the filly.
RIGHT SPICE (J. McKinnon) and CASH ALL OVER (S. Drake) came together on jumping away.
NEVADA INN (S. Katsidis) jumped outwards at the start and made contact with HIGH POWER (M. Pelling).
Shortly after the start, NEVADA INN was tightened for room between BOBBIE BELLE (A. Merritt), which was taken out slightly by CHANCY LAD (J. Murphy), and HIGH POWER, which shifted in.
HIGH POWER was caught wide in the middle stages.
Near the 700m., RIGHT SPICE shifted out and made contact with the hind quarters of MIESQUE'S MAGIQUE (R. Goltz) and became unbalanced.
CHANCY LAD commenced to hang out approaching the 400m. and shortly after straightening hampered NEVADA INN. CHANCY LAD continued to hang out for the remainder of the event, placing its rider at a disadvantage. Connections were advised that a warning was being placed on CHANCY LAD regarding its racing manners.
Apprentice J. Murphy, rider of CHANCY LAD, was severely reprimanded for using her whip in an unorthodox manner to hit the horse on the near side shoulder.
Race 8: XXXX Good As Gold Class 1 H'cap - 1666m.
1st - Ruling Dane 2nd - Leica Launch 3rd - Joaling 4th - Birallee Babe
GOLD NAT (R. Pittman) was severely crowded for room on jumping away between WYSIWS (M. Rice) and ROYAL FLAIR (M. Pelling), which shifted out.
Approaching the 1300m., ROYAL FLAIR (M. Pelling), which was inclined to overrace, had to be steadied when racing in restricted room to the inside of ULTIMATE GOLD (A. Kennedy), which was taken in by BRIGHT BOY (A. Merritt). A. Merritt, rider of BRIGHT BOY, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
An inquiry was adjourned into the reason for STALLMEISTER falling and dislodging P. Hammersley near the 500m.. After taking evidence from apprentice J. McKinnon, his representative trainer Mr W. Bishop, and A. Kennedy, the inquiry was adjourned to Thursday, 21 April. As a result of the fall, LEICA LAUNCH (S. Katsidis), JOALING (D. Green), RULING DANE (J. Sharp) and WYSIWS (M. Rice) were all hampered as a consequence.
WYSIWS (M. Rice) was obliged to race wide in the early and middle stages.
