The start of this race was delayed considerably after STAR CURE broke through the barriers and galloped a considerable distance. STAR CURE was declared a late scratching at 1.04 pm. In this incident, Matthew Palmer, rider of STAR CURE, was injured and transported to hospital for observation. As a result of this incident, SMART OF COURSE became fractious in the barriers and momentarily cast. Acting on veterinary advice, SMART OF COURSE was declared a late scratching at 1.05 pm. Subsequent to the event, all monies invested on both horses were ordered to be refunded, with deductions as follows: all bets made prior to 1.04 pm to be subject to deductions of 12 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 14 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets; bets made between 1.04 pm and 1.05 pm, subject to deductions of 3 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 4 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets. Trainer Mr B. Guy’s representative was advised that STAR CURE must barrier trial satisfactorily in an official trial prior to its next race start. Subsequent riding changes were made as per the Stewards Summary Sheet.

Due to the delay, stewards advised that the remaining races would be rescheduled back one race time, with the final race to start at 5.12 pm.

Leaving the 900m, WHAT IS THIS (B. Stewart) shifted in, making contact with SWORD OF DAMOCLES (R. Goltz), which then commenced to race fiercely. A short distance later, FIRST NIGHT FEVER (L. When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance of FIVEGRAND, trainer S. He added that this was the filly’s second start for him, adding that FIVEGRAND had worked well leading into today’s race and was not surprised by the winning performance of the filly today.
