Race 1: The BJ. Matthews Transport Pty Ltd F&M Maiden H'cap – 1350m
1st –Supervolito 2nd – Flash Juliet 3rd – Reelblu 4th – Catch A Chic
Trainer D. Kelly was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for CATCH A CHIC by the prescribed time.
The start of this race was delayed when LOOK AT RUBY cast its near fore plate in its preliminary. The mare was attended to by the club’s farrier upon arrival at the barriers.
Near the 1100m, MISS VEE (S. Katsidis) shifted out, resulting in LOOK AT RUBY (D. Green) being taken wider on the track.
Stewards sought an explanation from S. Richardson regarding his riding of TEQUILAKOKO over the final 600m. S. Richardson explained that the mare was travelling well when trailing CATCH A CHIC coming to the home turn, however when placed under pressure shortly after straightening, his mount did not respond as he would have liked although the mare did run home fairly under hands and heels riding from the 200m. The explanation was noted.
LOVERS TRUCE (M. Milford) raced 3 wide without cover during the race.
Race 2: The JR Stephens & Co Pty Ltd CG&E Maiden H'cap – 1350m
1st – Hot Fosters 2nd – Shovnco 3rd –Bokarina 4th - Hootilla
WILDDOC (D. Barron) was slow to begin.
A short distance after the start, BOKARINA (M. Cahill) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of SUAVE CONSORT (J. Holder).
SUAVE CONSORT overraced in the early stages and for some distance approaching the 1000m and had to be restrained to avoid the heels of EIGHT STRANDS (A. Spinks).
Near the 400m, AFLORA (M. Hellyer), when racing greenly, had to be eased to avoid the heels of SHOVNCO (J. Daley), which shifted in slightly despite the efforts of its rider.
SHOVNCO (J. Daley) raced 3 wide without cover throughout the event.
D. Barron advised that WILDOC hung out throughout the race and as a result he was placed at a disadvantage.
SUAVE CONSORT suffered a bleeding attack during the race. Trainer P. Balzen was advised that the gelding would be barred for the mandatory 3 months from racing.
When questioned regarding the riding tactics adopted on BOKARINA, M. Cahill explained he was instructed to ride the colt with cover and from the barrier he elected to restrain in the early stages and settled towards the rear of the field. He explained that BOKARINA overraced in the early stages and approaching the 600m rather than improve around the field he elected to remain on the rails and attempt to save valuable ground. M. Cahill further added that he was held up and unable to improve in the early part of the straight and was then disappointed for a run approaching the 200m between AFLORA (M. Hellyer) and KING KITAAYA (L. Rolls) and following this the colt worked to the line strongly.
Race 3: The New Breed Mack Metroliner QTIS 600 2yo Maiden Plate – 800m
1st – True Blue Angel 2nd – Encinitas 3rd – Little Zachary 4th - Astralon
As S. Scriven was unavailable, J. Holder was substituted as the rider of ENCINITAS.
ASIDE (A. Pattillo), ENCINITAS (J. Holder) and ASTRALON (M. Cahill) all proved difficult to load. The respective trainers were advised that a warning was being placed on those runners and that their barrier manners would be monitored in future.
JUNABEE ROAD and JACKPOT JIMMY (A. Spinks) were hampered at the start between STEADY GUN KATE (L. Rolls), which shifted out, and LITTLE ZACHARY (E. Wilson), which shifted in.
D’JET (R. Hinricks) was slow to begin.
ASTRALON (M. Cahill) and ENCINITAS (J. Holder) were both inclined to lay out rounding the home turn.
After passing the 700m, JUNABEE ROAD (M. Palmer) shifted out abruptly and made heavy contact with TAIL AND ALL (S. Katsidis). TAIL AND ALL then had to be steadied away from the heels of TRUE BLUE ANGEL (J. Byrne).
After passing the 500m, ASIDE (A. Pattillo) commenced to hang out and proved difficult to ride rounding the home turn.
Over the concluding stages, ENCINITAS (J. Holder) was inclined to shift in and away from TRUE BLUE ANGEL (J. Byrne). This resulted in J. Holder being unable to ride that colt out in his normal manner.
Race 4: The New Breed Mack Granite 3yo Maiden H'cap – 1200m
1st – Ella Daniela 2nd – Testa’s Big Lassie 3rd - Chili Mud Crab 4th – Zeditave Plus
SEQUIZ (J. Byrne) jumped away awkwardly and made contact with the hind quarters of CHILLI MUD CRAB (B. Pengelly).
PRINCE JOHN (J. Holder) jumped outwards at the start, making contact with ZEDITAVE PLUS (L. Cassidy).
HEADS OR TAILS (R. Hurley) and TESTA’S BIG LASSIE (S. Katsidis) also jumped away awkwardly.
After travelling a short distance, HEADS OR TAILS had to be steadied to avoid the heels of CHILLI MUD CRAB, which shifted out slightly.
Approaching the 800m, PRINCE JOHN shifted in despite the efforts of its rider, resulting in HEADS OR TAILS being taken in on to SEQUIZ, which, when racing greenly, was severely hampered.
After passing the 200m, MAGIC OPTION (K. Ashton) was inclined to hang in.
J. Byrne was questioned regarding the poor performance of SEQUIZ today. He explained that after the colt jumped away awkwardly, losing ground, it did not travel well at any stage and approaching the 1000m, when racing tight to the inside of TESTA’S BIG LASSIE, SEQUIZ shifted out across the hind quarters of that runner and had to be checked. J. Byrne added that he was further inconvenienced near the 800m and SEQUIZ failed to stretch out from that point. Trainer K. Schweida explained to stewards it was his intention to have SEQUIZ gelded and he would review whether he proceeds with its current preparation. Stewards advised trainer K. Schweida that SEQUIZ would be required to compete in an official barrier trial before it is permitted to race again. A post race veterinary examination of SEQUIZ failed to reveal any significant abnormalities and a routine swab sample was taken.
Race 5: The New Breed Mack Trident 3yo & Up Maiden H'cap – 1015m
1st – Ma Bonne Annee 2nd – Ramani 3rd – Our Lexas Lad 4th – Go Dan Go
STATELY WORLD (M. Heagney) had to be steadied when tightened for room at the start by CUBBY HOUSE (J. Byrne), which shifted out.
PEDAL PUSHER (M. Cahill) raced 3 wide without cover throughout.
After travelling a short distance, PINS OF FURY (M. Palmer) commenced to buck and took no further part in the race. Trainer B. Robinson was advised that the gelding must compete satisfactorily in an official trial before racing again.
MA BONNE ANNEE (L. Rolls) shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages.
LORD THEODORE (L. Cassidy) was inclined to hang in in the early stages of the straight and when corrected by its rider approaching the 200m, the gelding became unbalanced and lost ground. LORD THEODORE continued to hang in for the remainder of the race, and L. Cassidy was unable to ride the gelding out in his normal manner.
Following the race, MA BONNE ANNEE had small traces of blood in its near-side nostril. Upon arrival back at trainer L. Wheeler’s stables, his veterinary surgeon performed an endoscopic examination on the horse, which confirmed that it had bled from the near-side nostril. L. Wheeler was advised MA BONNE ANNEE would be required to gallop over 1000m in the presence of a steward before being permitted to race again.
Race 6: The New Breed Mack Superliner Class 1 H'cap – 1690m
1st – Mr Boogiewoogie 2nd – Dalai 3rd – Miss Trish 4th – Paris Label
Trainer T. Stevens was fined $50 for failing to declare hoof pads on MYTHICAL KING by the prescribed time.
ELEVEN OYSTERS was declared a late scratching at 11.35 am on veterinary advice.
MYTHICAL KING (J. Holder) jumped away awkwardly, resulting in BOUILLABAISSE (M. Hellyer), COOLY ROAD (J. Taylor), MR BOOGIEWOOGIE (J. Byrne) and MINUS ONE (K. Forrester) all being hampered.
DALAI (N. Evans) raced 3 wide in the early stages until near the 1000m.
A post race veterinary examination of COOLY ROAD revealed the horse to be lame in the off foreleg and to be making an abnormal respiratory noise. Trainer W. Sutton was advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance for COOLY ROAD, including the results of an ECG.
Race 7: The New Breed Mack Titan Class 3 H'cap – 1015m
1st – Inanna 2nd – Moonan Kathleen 3rd – Martha’s Vineyard 4th – Dr Barnard
Prior to the race, connections advised that Revered Ruler would be ridden back from the wide barrier, and brought to the outside in the straight.
A pre race veterinary examination PUB TORQUE cleared the horse to race.
VERRIDON (M. Hellyer) was resaddled upon arrival at the barriers.
MOONAN KATHLEEN (L. Rolls) shifted out abruptly at the start, resulting in DR BARNARD (J. Byrne) and OSCAR THE GREAT (J. Holder) both having to be checked. As a result, J. Byrne, rider of DR BARNARD, became unbalanced in the saddle and lost the use of his off-side stirrup iron for a short distance.
Approaching the home turn, DR BARNARD was held up and unable to improve.
Apprentice J. Daley, rider of REVERED RULER, was advised to refrain from using her whip on runners that are showing no response.
Race 8: The Mack Trucks Class 1 Brisbane H'cap – 1200m.
1st – Zekleza 2nd – Miss Tennessee 3rd – Fields Of Plenty 4th – Hawk Eyed
Upon arrival at the barriers, MISS TENNESSEE had to be resaddled.
The start of this race was delayed when EGYPTIAN JEWEL proved difficult to load. Trainer S. Hardy was advised that the mare must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial before being permitted to race again.
MIND STAR (A. Merritt) jumped away awkwardly, making contact with the hind quarters of NOBLE INTENT (T. Treichel).
EGYPTIAN JEWEL (M. Palmer) was slow to begin.
MIND STAR then raced fiercely in the middle stages.
ZEKEZA (B. Pengelly) hung out rounding the home turn.
MISS TENNESSEE (L. Cassidy) shifted out under pressure over the final 200m.
Jockey T. Treichel, rider of NOBLE INTENT, which performed poorly, explained that the gelding was able to lead without being pressured in the early stages, although it did change stride on a number of occasions between the 900m and 600m. T. Treichel added that NOBLE INTENT failed to respond to his riding approaching and rounding the home turn and weakened in the home straight. Stable representative K. Loy explained that NOBLE INTENT had worked well leading up to today’s race and indicated that it may now be spelled. K. Loy further undertook to report any abnormality which may become apparent in the day following the race which may have had a bearing on the performance. A post race veterinary examination of NOBLE INTENT revealed the horse to have a minor laceration to the near foreleg and bleeding on the off fore fetlock.
A post race veterinary examination of EGYPTIAN JEWEL failed to reveal any significant abnormalities, although the mare did have a minor laceration to the near fore leg.
