Apprentice J. Brown was reprimanded for failing to present a letter of authority.
As R. McMahon was to be overweight in Races 2, 4 and 7, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. R. McMahon was fined
Race 1: GALLERY NEWTOWN MAIDEN PLATE – 2150M
1st – Coastal 2nd – Tarturi 3rd – Winning Moments 4th – Al Jalila
POWER GEDA (J. Byrne) was slow to begin.
WINNING MOMENTS (M. Abe) overraced in the early stages.
Race 2: CITY OF IPSWICH QTIS 3YO H’CAP – 1666M
1st – Regal Legend 2nd – Tickled 3rd – Zigurat 4th – Troilus Fuse
SO SHARPLY (D. Green) and ZIGURAT (J. Taylor) were slow to begin.
TROILUS FUSE (P. Schmidt) made the 1500m crossing awkwardly.
TROILUS FUSE overraced during the early stages.
Both GOLDEN PALMS (O. Turpin) hung out from the 500m and continued to do so for the remainder of the event.
TROILUS FUSE was held up and unable to improve rounding the home turn.
SO SHARPLY bled from both nostrils during the event. Trainer W. King was advised that SO SHARPLY would now be barred from racing for 3 months and must perform satisfactorily in a gallop over 1000m in the presence of a steward before being permitted to race again.
Stewards sought an explanation from R. Wiggins regarding the tactics adopted on RUN AWAY RUBY and also the overall performance of that filly. Jockey Wiggins stated that it had been his intention to ride the horse in a forward position, however after beginning awkwardly and pressuring the horse in the early stages of the event it became apparent that he was going to be unable to obtain a forward position and, from its awkward alley, elected to take hold and position the horse closer to the fence in the second half of the field. In regards to the overall performance, he stated that when asked for an effort leaving the 600m the filly responded well, however shortly after entering the straight proved disappointing. Trainer T. Wolfgram stated that the horse had only recently entered her stable and in her opinion would derive fitness benefit from today’s performance. She further stated that she would advise stewards if anything came to light in coming days which may have had an effect on the performance.
Race 3: KAREN VALENTINE MILLINER C,G&E CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1000M
1st –Double Image 2nd – Tallyho 3rd – Embraer 4th – Damage And Blue
On jumping EMBRAER (R. McMahon) shifted out and bumped TALLYHO (J. Byrne).
INTADOM (T. Harrison), FELON (Matthew Palmer) and HUFF AND PUFF (A. Erhart) raced wide throughout.
Rounding the home turn INTADOM shifted out under pressure and continued to do so for some distance until leaving the 200m, resulting in FELON being taken wider on the track. Apprentice T. Harrison (INTADOM) was advised to stop riding and straighten her mounts in similar circumstances.
TALLYHO hung out rounding the home turn.
A post-race veterinary examination of AIR BOUND (M. Hellyer) revealed the horse to be lame in the off fore tendon. Trainer R. Lipp was advised a veterinary certificate would be required prior to the horse’s next start.
EQUALES bled from both nostrils during the event. Trainer R. Dart was advised that EQUALES would now be barred from racing for 3 months and must perform satisfactorily in a gallop over 1000m in the presence of a steward before being permitted to race again.
Race 4: WWW.AUTOGRAPHEDMEMORABILIA.NET.AU F&M CLASS 2 H'CAP - 1000M
1st - Alltherightmoves 2nd - Not To Share 3rd - Shocking Blue 4th - Fusette
BOARDIES (J. Brown) jumped away awkwardly and made contact with CHARSUI (Matthew Palmer)
HANDBAG (A. Erhart) and DIBABA (J. Byrne) raced wide throughout.
G. Colless reported that ALLTHERIGHTMOVES commenced to hang out from the 500m and continued to do so until entering the home straight.
Approaching the 200m CHARSUI had to be checked when disappointed for a run to the inside of BOARDIES, which shifted in under pressure. Whilst it was established that CHARSUI had not obtained the run to the inside of BOARDIES, apprentice J. Brown (BOARDIES) was nonetheless advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. Following this incident CHARSUI had difficulty obtaining clear running until leaving the 100m.
Race 5: MELBOURNE CUP DAY LUNCHEON – BOOK NOW! CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1666M
1st – Easy Lager 2nd – Seriously Ready 3rd – Rare Subject 4th – Cooinda
Shortly after the start RARE SUBJECT (J. Byrne) and RIO REX (K. Forrester) were tightened for room between SERIOUSLY READY (L. Cassidy), which shifted out, and POETIC MISTRESS (M. Hellyer), which shifted in after beginning awkwardly and bumping KEEPONROLLING (B. Stewart). In this incident RARE SUBJECT was forced to check from the heels of SERIOUSLY READY.
CAPTAIN INVINCIBLE (J. Taylor) shifted out at the start and made contact with THE DOW JONES (Matthew Palmer).
EXTRAVAGANT MISS (L. Cheshire) overraced and lost ground during the early stages. RARE SUBJECT, which was following, also lost ground as a result.
RIO REX and THE DOW JONES raced wide throughout.
Rounding the home turn RARE SUBJECT laid in under pressure, momentarily inconveniencing ALLURE SPENDER (P. Schmidt).
Apprentice P. Schmidt reported that ALLURE SPENDER got its tongue over the bit during the race.
A post-race veterinary examination of KEEPONROLLING, which performed below market expectations, found the horse to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer S. Andrew indicated that the horse would now be sent for a spell. Stewards advised Mr Andrew that a veterinary certificate would be required prior to the horse’s next start, including x-ray results performed on the horse’s near knee.
Race 6: CHANNEL 7 MAIDEN PLATE – 1350M
1st – Mann Magic 2nd – Sir Slipper 3rd – Excellent Elite 4th – Liberty Quest
Trainer T. Green was fined $100 under LR. 67 for failing to declare apprentice B. Looker as the rider of DANCING KING by the prescribed time.
BADBOYCURTIS (J. Brown) was slow to begin.
Near the 900m SIR WILLIAM (N. Tomizawa), which shifted in, was forced to steady from the heels of WILY PRINCESS, which shifted out.
SHOW US YA IVORYS (J. Taylor) and DANCING KING (B. Looker) raced wide for the majority of the event.
SHOW US YA IVORYS hung in throughout the event.
Near the 300m SIR SLIPPER (L. Cassidy) shifted out in an attempt to improve around the heels of LIBERTY QUEST (R. McMahon) and in doing so made contact with EXCELLENT ELITE (J. Byrne) A short distance later SIR SLIPPER again shifted out after initiating contact with EXCELLENT ELITE on a number of occasions.
Near the 200m TIGERLICIOUS (D. Griffin) improved quickly on to the heels of the tiring RAFFLES MISS (G. Colless) and had to be checked.
BADBOYCURTIS was held up for clear running between the 200m and the 100m.
Stewards afforded L. Cassidy the opportunity of commenting on the tactics adopted on SIR SLIPPER, which raced in a more rearward position than at its most recent starts. He stated that he had been instructed to ride the horse in a forward position, however after riding the horse very vigorously during the early stages, it became apparent he was going to be unable to obtain a forward position and as a result took hold and shifted in to obtain a position on the fence. He stated that given the circumstances in that the horse then had difficulty obtaining clear running shortly after straightening, he was pleased with the performance.
Stewards afforded J. Byrne the opportunity of commenting on the performance of EXCELLENT ELITE. Jockey Byrne stated that during the early and middle stages he was forced to niggle the horse in order to hold its position and added that the horse finished the race off well in his opinion. He added that the horse would be better suited to races over a longer distance than today’s event on a bigger track and that he had recommended to connections to add blinkers to the horse’s gear.
A post-race veterinary examination of RAFFLES MISS revealed the horse to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer R. Hilton was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for the horse prior to its next start.
Race 7: BACARDI BREEZERS CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1350M
1st – African Mama 2nd – Abu Dhabi Gold 3rd – Mot De Passe 4th – Mitchener
Trainer Alan Bailey advised stewards that MORE MORE MORE had undergone corrective throat surgery since its last race start in November 2010.
MORE MORE MORE, which was kicked by another runner behind the barriers, was a late scratching at 4.47 p.m. on veterinary advice after sustaining a laceration to its near hind leg. Stewards advised trainer A. Bailey that he must produce a veterinary clearance for MORE MORE MORE prior to its next start. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on MORE MORE MORE be refunded, with the following deductions to betting to apply:
8 cents in the dollar for the win on AFRICAN MAMA
11 cents in the dollar for place of winner AFRICAN MAMA
10 cents in the dollar for 2nd place ABU DHABI GOLD
12 cents in the dollar for 3rd place MOT DE PASSE
AFRICAN MAMA (T. Bell) was tightened for room at the start between HAYIL KING DAYL (B. Abbey), which shifted out, and GEOLOGICAL (D. Missen), which shifted in.
MITCHENER (J. Byrne) was forced to race wide whilst being pressured to obtain the lead during the early stages.
Near the 900m ABU DHABI GOLD (C. Munce) was steadied from the heels of DOWN ANOTHER TRACK (S. Galloway), which shifted in. As a result of this ABU DHABI GOLD shifted wider on the track and raced wide from that point onwards.
COUSINE ISLAND (R. Wiggins) raced wide throughout.
Near the 700m GEOLOGICAL improved on to heels and had to be steadied.
Leaving the 300m MOT DE PASSE (T. Harrison) commenced to shift out under pressure, forcing AFRICAN MAMA considerably wider on the track. Apprentice T. Harrison was reprimanded for this incident.
Stewards sought an explanation from D. Missen regarding the disappointing performance of GEOLOGICAL. Jockey Missen stated that the gelding did not display its customary early speed in today’s event and he was forced to pressure the horse to hold its position near the 1000m. He added that after shifting wider on the track near the 400m to improve into the race, the horse failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing in the run to the line. He further added that in his opinion the horse may have come to the end of its preparation. Stewards intend interviewing trainer G. Heinrich at a later date.
Stewards sought an explanation from S. Galloway regarding the poor performance of DOWN ANOTHER TRACK, which tailed off in the event. Jockey Galloway stated that after obtaining a favourable run just behind the leaders at a point near the 900m, the horse travelled well until leaving the 700m and from that point on proved very disappointing. He felt he could attribute this to the horse possibly displacing its palate and choking down. A post-race veterinary examination of DOWN ANOTHER TRACK revealed no abnormalities. Trainer T. Bailey advised stewards that he would have veterinary tests performed on the gelding in the coming days and forward the results to stewards when available. Stewards advised Mr Bailey that should no abnormalities be detected, the gelding would be required to trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to its next start.
