KHUMBULA (J. Taylor), BANGALAY (J. Taylor) and BUNDU BOY (A. Erhart) were all slow to begin.
BUNDU BOY overraced in the early and middle stages and leaving the 800m shifted out forcing LIGHTNING VAULT (D. Missen) wider on the track.
SIR JOEL (Matthew Palmer) and LIGHTNING VAULT raced wide for the majority of the event.
BUNDU BOY lost its near hind plate in running.
Race 2: BACARDI BREEZER F&M MAIDEN PLATE – 1200M
1st – On The Liffey 2nd – Dazzling Display 3rd – Cougar Fish 4th – Ultrazonal
Stewards inquired into the circumstances of C. Munce’s dual engagements on ULTRAZONAL and MITESSA. After considering the explanations of C. Munce’s manager and trainers L. Birchley (ULTRAZONAL) and R. Fleming (MITESSA), stewards were of the view there were extenuating circumstances and took no further action in the matter. As a result of this, stewards approved R. Wiggins as the replacement rider for MITESSA.
MITESSA (R. Wiggins), which was initially slow to begin, was contacted shortly after the start by A SNIP OF GOLD (J. Warrington), which shifted in after beginning awkwardly.
THE SINGING BULLET (M. Hellyer) was slow to begin.
Near the 1100m A SNIP OF GOLD shifted out abruptly, inconveniencing THE SINGING BULLET.
DAZZLING DISPLAY (R. McMahon) raced wide throughout.
Approaching the 300m A SNIP OF GOLD laid out across the heels of DAZZLING DISPLAY and had to be steadied.
ON THE LIFFEY (A. Pattillo) was disappointed for a run between JEKAMA (J. Byrne) and DAZZLING DISPLAY at the 300m.
Race 3: XXXX GOLD QTIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE – 1530M
1st – Mister Chicago 2nd – Exone 3rd – Rockin’ Roz 4th – Star Of Sorrento
As B. Stewart was ill, R. McMahon was substituted as the rider of STAR OF SORRENTO.
Trainer M. Thexton was fined $100 under LR. 67 for failing to declare J. Taylor as the rider of ROCKIN' ROZ by the prescribed time.
NOT A GREAT LOOK (Matthew Palmer) was a late scratching at 2.11 p.m. on veterinary advice after the horse became fractious in the barriers. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on NOT A GREAT LOOK be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:
11 cents in the dollar for the Win - MISTER CHICAGO
12 cents in the dollar for place of winner - MISTER CHICAGO
15 cents in the dollar for 2nd place – EXONE
10 cents in the dollar for 3rd place - ROCKIN' ROZ
Trainer S. Morrisey was advised that NOT A GREAT LOOK must obtain a further barrier certificate.
MISTER CHICAGO (J. Warrington), EXONE (G. Geran) and STAR OF SORRENTO (R. McMahon) were all slow to begin.
Near the 1200m RELLE'S TAG (S. Bogenhuber) had to be steadied off the heels of WILLYWYNYA (J. Byrne), which shifted in. STAR OF SORRENTO, which was trailing, was inconvenienced in the incident and obliged to shift wider on the track.
CAPTAIN FASTBUCK (R. Wiggins) raced wide throughout.
Approaching the 300m FERTIRO (D. Missen) was tightened for room when racing between MISTER CHICAGO and ROCKIN' ROZ (J. Taylor), which shifted out to improve.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of FERTIRO, D. Missen said that the horse travelled well, although in a more forward position today, but when placed under pressure did not sprint as quickly as anticipated. D. Missen was of the opinion that the slow tempo of the race today did not suit FERTIRO. Trainer G. Taylor agreed with the comments of D. Missen and advised that consideration would be given to the future racing program of FERTIRO. A post-race veterinary examination of FERTIRO revealed no significant abnormalities.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of WILLYWYNYA, J. Byrne said the horse overraced in the early and middle stages of the event and in his opinion failed to run out the 1500m of today’s race. Trainer G. Taylor agreed with the comments of J. Byrne and advised that consideration would be given to the future racing program of WILLYWYNYA. A post-race veterinary examination of WILLYWYNYA revealed no significant abnormalities.
Race 4: YALUMBA C,G&E CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1350M
1st – Flagges Flying 2nd – Lillianne’s Choice 3rd – Triple Elite 4th – Dragon Size
TAIL AND ALL (G. Colless) began awkwardly.
CORONADO (S. Galloway) began awkwardly and shifted out making contact with FLAGGES FLYING (J. Taylor).
BOSSBERG (D. Griffin) raced three wide in the early stages.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of TAIL AND ALL, G. Colless said the horse was only travelling fairly in the middle stages and in an endeavour to put the horse into the race he moved TAIL AND ALL to a three wide position from the 600m, but the horse failed to respond and proved most disappointing. Trainer R. Heathcote confirmed his disappointment with the gelding’s performance and undertook to provide stewards with the results of blood tests he intends to have carried out on the horse during the week.
Stewards inquired into the riding tactics adopted on DRAGON SIZE, which established a clear lead during the middle stages of the event. Trainer L. Wheeler advised stewards it was the intention to position the horse just off the pace, however in his opinion the horse, which had not raced for approximately 7 weeks, overraced in the early stages. Apprentice B. Richardson confirmed the assessment by Mr Wheeler and advised it was her intention to restrain the horse to a trailing position behind FLAGGES FLYING, however because DRAGON SIZE was going too keenly, she was unable to restrain the horse to such a degree and therefore elected to allow the horse to stride forward, however it overraced in the lead. Stewards noted the explanations.
Race 5: CHANNEL 7 F&M CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1350M
1st – Dance Idol 2nd – Miss Mimmick 3rd – Miss Judge 4th – Sweet Reward
MISS MIMMICK (D. Tanti), which was fractious in the barriers, began awkwardly.
FUNKY LADY (R. Wiggins) was slow to begin.
DANCE IDOL (B. Looker) was restrained at the start.
OUR TRIPLE TREAT (T. Harrison) raced wide for the majority of the event.
HANDBAG (S. Arnold) hung out rounding the home turn, taking OUR TRIPLE TREAT wider on the track.
Stewards questioned apprentice S. Arnold and trainer D. Lawlor regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of HANDBAG. Apprentice Arnold stated that the horse travelled well until the 500m and then failed to respond when placed under pressure. He added that the mare commenced to hang out rounding the home turn and was of the view that the removal of the blinkers for today’s event proved detrimental to the horse’s chances. Trainer D. Lawlor confirmed his disappointment with the horse’s performance and agreed with the assessment of the apprentice regarding the blinkers and advised stewards it would be the intention to reapply blinkers to the mare. Stewards noted the comments. A post-race veterinary examination of HANDBAG revealed no significant findings.
OUR TRIPLE TREAT lost its off fore plate in running.
Race 6: CITY OF IPSWICH CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1700M
1st – Murrumba Downs 2nd – Carlson’s Felt 3rd – Explorer Club 4th – Rio Rex
After exercising his right to view the Stewards’ patrol film, G. Geran, the rider of EXPLORER CLUB, placed 3rd by the Judge, lodged an objection against CARLSON'S FELT (B. Richardson) being placed 2nd, alleging interference over the final 100m. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the film, it was established that EXPLORER CLUB was buffeted for room near the finish of the event when racing between CARLSON'S FELT and MURRUMBA DOWNS (C. Munce) as a result of movement of both horses and as such were of the view that the protest should be dismissed. At a subsequent inquiry apprentice B. Richardson and C. Munce were both cautioned for allowing their mounts to shift ground at that point.
RIO REX (D. Tanti) was tightened on jumping away between MEAT HEAD (G. Colless) and AUBURN GOLD (R. McMahon), which shifted out.
SAHARA MAGIC (J. Warrington) was slow to begin.
Approaching the 1400m RIO REX was racing very keenly and got its head in the air when being restrained.
CRAZY WAYS (S. Galloway) raced three wide without cover in the middle stages.
Near the 300m MURRUMBA DOWNS appeared to shy at birds on the outside of the track at that point.
Stewards inquired into an incident near the 200m where AUBURN GOLD was checked when tightened for room when racing between VERTIGO (M. Hellyer) and BACK IN LOUISIANA (J. Byrne). After taking evidence from all parties, J. Byrne was charged with a contravention of AR. 137(a) for being careless at that point and allowing BACK IN LOUISIANA to shift in. At the request of J. Byrne, the inquiry was adjourned to enable apprentice B. Richardson, the rider of CARLSON'S FELT, to attend the inquiry.
Stewards questioned G. Colless regarding the performance of MEAT HEAD. G. Colless said the horse was under pressure from the 700m and was most disappointed with the horse’s performance. Stewards will question trainer L. Gough regarding the performance and the future program for MEAT HEAD. A post-race veterinary examination of MEAT HEAD revealed no significant findings.
When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance of MURRUMBA DOWNS compared to its two recent starts this campaign, trainer B. Baldwin stated that the horse was tightened for room in running at its more recent start at the Gold Coast on 17 September and is better suited by the distance of today’s event of 1700m compared to the horse’s previous starts over 1400m. Stewards noted his comments.
Race 7: RAY WHITE IPSWICH CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1200M
1st – In Berlin 2nd – Bundy 3rd – Secret Pleasure 4th – Vintage Flint
Stewards permitted N. Thomas to replace the non-claiming apprentice M. Wood, who was injured, as the rider of BUNDY.
ANOTHER WELCOME (J. Taylor) began awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with CHROMED (J. Letherby), which in turn shifted out making contact with ELITE SHERILEA (N. Seymour).
GO DAN GO (S. Bogenhuber) was crowded at the start when tightened for room between OLD RAWHIDE (M. Hellyer) and VINTAGE FLINT (S. Galloway), both of which shifted ground.
Rounding the home turn BUNDY (N. Thomas) hung out, forcing COLIN'S CHOICE and SECRET PLEASURE (J. Byrne) wider on the track.
Near the 400m VINTAGE FLINT was eased off the heels of OLD RAWHIDE which shifted in slightly.
Stewards questioned jockey J. Warrington and trainer B. Sharpley regarding the riding tactics adopted on COLIN'S CHOICE today where the horse raced outside of the leader, setting a strong tempo before yielding ground over the final 400m. Mr Sharpley advised the instructions were to press forward on the horse from the wide barrier. J. Warrington stated that following on from the instructions of the trainer, he urged the horse forward, however it overraced during the early and middle stages of the event. After considering the matter, stewards were of the view that J. Warrington may have erred in relation to the tactics during the early and middle stages, however his riding was not to the extent that it was culpable under the rules.
ANOTHER WELCOME (J. Taylor) lost its near hind plate in running.
