CLASS 3 HANDICAP – 0800 METRES (10 Starters)
All weights were raised 1 kg for this event at acceptance time as per Regulation NQ1 (5). POWDER PUFF GIRL (W. Kenning) was fractious in the barriers prior to the start. SIR CELESTIAL (A. Spradau) was a fraction slow into stride, due to the horse jumping awkwardly when a start was effected. Shortly after the start GRASETA STAR (D. Jones) raced erratically and shifted ground outwards despite the efforts of its rider to maintain a straight course, and in doing so severely hampered the forward movement of RICH PLAYMATE (J. Felix) at the 700 metre point. POWDER PUFF GIRL (W. Kenning) was also inconvenienced in this incident and forced to alter course slightly. POWDER PUFF GIRL (W. Kenning) raced very wide on the track when rounding the turn into the home straight. It was noted that FLING (L. Critoph) was trapped wide for the entire event.
RACE 2: JULIA CREEK TURF CLUB INC.- MARWILL PTY LTD QTIS MAIDEN PLATE – 1000 METRES (9 Starters)
TINY TITAN (K. Ballard) proved difficult to load. Both LET’S DO IT (D. Monaghan) and CALL ME CHIPIE (Apprentice T. Willan) lost ground at the start, due to both horses being slow into stride when a start was effected. TINY TITAN (K. Ballard) jumped away awkwardly losing some ground. Approaching the 750 metre mark RIODAJ (Apprentice T. Brummell) was forced to ease when OSHABERI (A. Spradau) hung inwards sharply at that point despite the efforts of its rider to give sufficient racing room to riders on his inside. LORD SCULPTURE (L. Critoph) shifted ground outwards under pressure over the final 100 metres and in doing so hampered KALATAN (M. Cummings) slightly approaching the 70 metre mark. The race winner OSHABERI was the only place getter who qualified for the QTIS bonus.
RACE 3: JULIA CREEK TURF CLUB INC.
CLASS B HANDICAP – 1200 METRES (9 Starters)
REDSHANK (J. Felix) was a fraction slow into stride when a start was effected. LUCKY MANGOES (W. Kenning) over raced and hung outwards off the track approaching the 800 metre resulting in the horse losing ground at that point. MANZALA (Ms D. Armstrong) returned to scale with a small laceration to the geldings near side hock region. Jockey L. Critoph the rider of LAUDERALE LORD reported to stewards following the event that the horse had raced very disappointingly, after being forced to race wide on the track from its outside barrier for the entire event and subsequently, was a beaten horse shortly after rounding the turn into the home straight. Stewards noted these comments for future reference. The club veterinary surgeon reported that on inspection the laceration on MANZALA was of a minor nature and therefore did not require any further treatment.
RACE 4: CRAIGLEA STUD-MARR’S REMOVALS FOSSIL TRAIL SERIES
CLASS 5 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES (12 Starters)
BRUNT (W. Kenning) proved very difficult for the barrier attendants to load, due to the fact the horse was reluctant to come forward and required the assistance of the clerk of the course to do so. OKAY BIRDY (M. Cummings) lost some ground at the start due to the horse being a fraction slow away. BRUNT (W. Kenning) jumped awkwardly when a start was effected. Approaching the 750 metre mark ROYAL TENOR (A. Morrison) had to ease slightly after improving to the inside of POLISKY (Apprentice T. Willan) who demonstrated a tendency to hang inwards at that point. Jockey W. Kenning reported that his mount BRUNT had raced extremely disappointingly and stated after being stirred up prior to the event and jumping awkwardly at the start was then trapped wide on the track from its extreme outside barrier this together with its big weight (64 kg), the horse was under pressure prior to the 600 metre mark to maintain its position in the field and was a beaten horse shortly thereafter. Stewards noted all these comments for future reference.
RACE 5: JULIA CREEK TURF CLUB INC.-JULIA CREEK FOODMART
OPEN HANDICAP – 1400 METRES (7 Starters)
SMIK (NZ) (W. Kenning) had a tendency to over race in the early and middle stages of the event. Approaching the 250 metre SMIK (NZ) (W. Kenning) had difficulty obtaining a clear run and shifted inwards slightly and came into contact with YA WAHEED (R. Mules) at that point.
