Stewards questioned apprentice S. Warren in the presence of her master, Mr R. Maund, regarding her riding of NATIVE SON from the 600m. to the winning post, in particular her failure to place the gelding under pressure from that point. S. Warren stated she was instructed to settle the gelding in the early and middle stages, and that the gelding only possess a short sprint. She explained that NATIVE SON had become too relaxed in running, and when the pace quickened at the 600m. she may have erred in not placing her mount under pressure sooner than she did. Miss Warren added that for some distance rounding the home turn she was unable to make ground when held up behind a number of runners. Mr Maund indicated to stewards that in his opinion Miss Warren should have improved from the 600m., bearing in mind the nature of the tight turning Kilcoy track. Apprentice A. Green, rider of OUR CIVIC HOPE, pleaded guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that she permitted her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of PLANET ZAM, resulting in PLANET ZAM having to be checked and dip, almost dislodging B.
