TAARELKI (E Simmons) was slowly away and hung throughout. Both LATE FOR TEA (J Lait) and MISTRESS DANE (R McMaster) jumped outwards and SUMMER REFUGE (T Matsuno) jumped inwards crowding TAARELKI. All horses lost ground in the incident.

Trainer J McConachy stated that he was disappointed with the performance of VERNAZZA (R Hammond) but could offer no explanation.

Race 5 Class 4 Handicap – 1400 Metres 5 Starters
MR. SOLO was scratched at payment time on veterinary advice when it was reported to stewards that the horse had suffered burning to the mouth apparently caused by the application of a corrosive substance by a person or persons unknown. Swab samples from that horse were sent for analysis.

Race 6 XXXX Longreach Cup – 1600 Metres 13 Starters
As the gates opened ROY BOY attempted to drop its head and raced roughly for a short distance. The trainer and jockey stated that a change of gear may have caused the horse to react in this way.
