Stewards Report

MACKAY TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SAT. 28/12/2002

STEWARDS PANEL: Mr. G. Hargraves (Chairman), Mr. B. Chestermaster, Mr. T. Moloney.

WEATHER – FINE TRACK – GOOD RAIL – TRUE

GENERAL – (From MTC Meeting 21/12/2002) Trainer M Attard reported that subsequently BEAR MICK was sore in the shoulder and would be spelled.

RACE 1 HAPPY NEW YEAR OPEN HCP 1500M.

LUBERTUS jumped away awkwardly and made contact with NEXT IN LINE.

RACE 2 BOMMERANG HOTEL CLASS 4 HCP 1500M.

NOODYTOBOO over raced in the early stages.

Near the 1200m EIRIE RETREAT had to be steadied off the heels of DADDY’S LITTLE MAN when the pace slackened and as a result CENTURY SUNSET which was following had to be eased and shifted out and hampered NOODYTOBOO.

Near the 100m CENTURY SUNSET shifted out and inconvenienced BRETNIC.

When questioned over the improved performance of DADDY’S LITTLE MAN Trainer S.Watkin (Snr) stated that after taking the blinkers off last start and trying to settle the horse off the pace the gelding failed to run on. He also stated that he didn’t issue any specific instructions to its rider Ms J.Pujolas other than if there were no leaders to let DADDY’S LITTLE MAN stride forward and attempt to run the race at its own tempo. His comments were noted but Mr Watkin was advised that if there are any dramatic changes to riding tactics he is to advise the stewards beforehand.

RACE 3 SHAKESPEARE INTERNATIONAL MAIDEN HCP 1500M.

HAGRID was slow away.

Approaching the 1000m BELLMISTER, which was over racing, shifted in and tightened the running of GRAHERE, which had to be steadied.

Jockey P.Cullen reported that after obtaining a trail on his mount BELLMISTER near the 1000m the gelding then began to over race and rather than fight BELLMISTER allowed it stride forward. He felt it might have resented the tongue-tie. His comments were noted.

RACE 4 T F WOOLAM CLASS 6 HCP 1050M.

JESTARELLA BOY and JOLTIN JOE made heavy contact on jumping.

RACE 5 XXXX CLASS 1 HCP 1050M.

R.Pujolas was indisposed and unable to ride GINJOS. He was replaced by Ms. J.Pujolas.

GERTRUDIS was slow away.

RACE 6 COCA COLA CLASS 2 HCP 1250M.

MIGHTY NEDIYM and MUSLIN were slow away.

Near the 400m SUPER SLOT which was held up for clear running was restrained off the heels of ABUZZ. As a consequence SILLY MISTAKE, which was following, struck the heels of SUPER SLOT and blundered.

When questioned over the disappointing performance of MIGHTY NEDIYM Jockey D. Simmons stated that after being slow away the gelding didn’t travel and was under pressure a long way from home. Trainer R. Walsh stated that the gelding has been working well and was expecting a bolder showing. A post race vet examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Mr Walsh advised stewards that he would monitor the gelding over the ensuing days and report any abnormalities if they arise.

A post race vet examination of SUPER SLOT revealed this gelding to have suffered a deep laceration to its near hind tendon.

ALL WINNERS EXCEPT DADDY’S LITTLE MAN WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
