GENERAL:
Due to a clerical error, D. Sparks was inadvertently shown instead of D. Simmons as the rider of GO AND DARE in Race 2 and MONKEYPICKEN in Race 3.
The explanation tendered by trainer Mr D. Erricker for failing to lodge an amended stable return notifying the change of ownership of ABOVE THE HORIZON (Race 3) and ISLAND ANNA (Race 6) was accepted.
Jockey R. Mules pleaded guilty to a charge under A.R. 85(b) in that he failed to fulfil his five riding engagements at the Townsville Turf Club meeting on Tuesday, 21st December 2004. R. Mules was fined $150.
Race 1: T. F. Woollam & Sons Class 6 Handicap - 1050m:
1st - COLONIAL EXPRESS 2nd - PERONISTA 3rd - JAZZARK 4th - GOLD ROONEY
MR. HEALEY (D. Tanti) was slow to begin.
Near the 400 metres GOLD ROONEY (R. Barone) shifted in and hampered PERONISTA (Apprentice G. McKeon). R. Barone was advised that he must make a greater effort to keep his mounts straight.
At the entrance to the straight COLONIAL EXPRESS (J. P. Stanley) laid in momentarily and its rider stopped riding and straightened his mount.
For a short distance near the 200 metres PERONISTA (Apprentice G. McKeon) shifted out across the heels of MR. HEALEY (D. Tanti), which was inconvenienced. Apprentice G. McKeon was advised that in similar circumstances he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mount.
Following the race W. Kenning reported that PROUD CANADIAN raced ungenerously for the majority of the event.
On pulling up BRAWNY JACK (R. Barone) attempted to jump the crossing.
Race 2: WIN Television QTIS Maiden Handicap, 1st Division, 1250m:
1st - SEADOG 2nd - ROBIN THE FROG 3rd - KOKONE 4th - PRINCE CHALLENGER
When SEADOG (A. Cox) steadied rounding the home turn, GO AND DARE (D. Simmons), which was following, had to be eased.
After the 250 metres SEADOG (A. Cox) had to be checked when PRINCE CHALLENGER (G. Cullen) shifted in when not quite clear. G. Cullen was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care.
When asked to explain the disappointing performance of CITY OF SMILES, Apprentice B. Hull stated that the gelding began well and raced keenly in the early stages, however over the concluding stages failed to respond to his riding. The explanation was noted.
When questioned Jockey R. Mules stated that he had been instructed to ride MIGHT RECITE back in the field, if possible. He said, however, that MIGHT RECITE began extremely well and he elected to ride the gelding along. He added that MIGHT RECITE then raced ungenerously for the remainder of the event.
Race 3: Peter Quinn Management QTIS Maiden Handicap - 1250m:
1st - SANITA 2nd - LOS ALTOS 3rd - QUARTERBACK 4th - FROM THE TOP
Prior to the race trainer Mr D. Boody informed stewards that Jockey R. Mules will be instructed to ride KEGAPOWDER in a more forward position and more aggressively than was its usual racing pattern. An announcement to that effect was made over the public address system.
Shortly after the start CORALITE (L. Timson) was taken out by SANITA (Apprentice G. McKeon). At the same time GIDDYUPADINGDONG (D. Tanti) had to be restrained momentarily when tightened for room by YOU’RE A DANCER (C. Beets), which shifted in slightly.
Near the 1100 metres KEGAPOWDER (R. Mules) had to be checked when tightened for room by SANITA (Apprentice G. McKeon), which was taken in by ABOVE THE HORIZON (G. Cullen), which was racing ungenerously and shifted in despite the efforts of its rider.
Following the race the Club’s veterinary surgeon reported that KEGAPOWDER (R. Mules), which failed to race competitively over the concluding stages and finished tailed off, had got its tongue over the bit during the event.
Race 4: Sugar City Produce Class 2 Handicap - 1500m:
1st - ELUSIVE DIAMOND 2nd - VILLENEUVE 3rd - ARCHER BOY 4th -

Apprentice T. Mathieson was reprimanded under A.R. 92(12) for failing to claim her full allowance on CONTENDER. Apprentice Mathieson was informed that in future she must not accept rides for which she cannot claim the full allowance.
In the early stages END SONG (D. Simmons) overraced.
Race 5: Mt Pleasant Post Office Class 3 Handicap - 1050m:
1st - HIGH RANGER 2nd - PUNTERS REWARD 3rd - MIDNIGHT DESIRE 4th - WHAT HAPPENED
Trainer Mr D. Crouch was fined $50 under L.R. 42(2) for failing to lodge an amended stable return notifying the change of ownership of MOORABBIN OVAL.
At the start HE’S A HULA (R. Barone) shifted in and brushed MR CHIPS (D. Simmons).
On jumping HIGH RANGER (Apprentice G. McKeon) shifted out and contacted PUNTERS REWARD (L. Timson).
In the early and middle stages MIDNIGHT DESIRE (J. P. Stanley) was forced to race wide.
In the early part of the straight MR CHIPS (D. Simmons) clipped the heels of HE’S A HULA (R. Barone), which shifted out slightly, and had to be checked. In the incident MR CHIPS became unbalanced and shifted in. At the same time GRANTON (P. Cullen) was tightened for room by PUNTERS REWARD (L. Timson), which shifted out . Both R. Barone and L. Timson were reprimanded for permitting their mounts to shift ground and Jockey Timson was advised to make a greater effort to keep her mounts straight.
Race 6: QRSE Austbrokers Regional Insurance Brokers Class 1 Handicap - 1050m:
1st - LADY TIME 2nd - CRUISING 3rd - RAIN KING 4th - MENSA PRINCE
After arriving behind the barriers ISLAND ANNA (P. Cullen) became fractious and proved extremely difficult to load. Trainer Mr D. Erricker was advised that ISLAND ANNA must perform to the satisfaction of the stewards in an official barrier trial before being permitted to start again.
ORRONG (D. Crossland) knuckled on jumping.
Approaching the 800 metres MENSA PRINCE (D. Tanti) shifted in and contacted DICTATE PLAY (D. Simmons), which in turn shifted in and inconvenienced ORRONG (D. Crossland).
At the 800 metres DICTATE PLAY (D. Simmons) improved up onto the heels of CRUISING (R. Barone) and had to be restrained.
From the home turn to the winning post CRUISING (R. Barone) shifted ground outwards. R. Barone was advised that he must make a greater effort to keep his mounts straight.
Race 7: QRSE J. D. Dodds Property Valuers Handicap 125F0m:
1st - WESTERN DOWNS 2nd - GAZZAM 3rd - GOLD EYE 4th - AGAIN A GAIN
After being placed in the barriers QUESADILLA (D. Crossland) became fractious.
Race 8: Frendeley Motors Class 4 Handicap - 1250m:
1st - SABRE SONIC 2nd - EXPRESS FORCE 3rd - WISE THOUGHTS 4th - MOON JET
Over the concluding stages SKIMBLESHANKS (W. Binder) shifted out and hampered LARCENY (Apprentice B. Hull), which had to be eased. W. Binder was advised that he must make a greater effort to keep his mounts straight.
Race 9: Visual Graphics Class 5 Handicap - 1800m:
ENDING (Apprentice B. Hull) blundered on jumping.
PIC OF THE PEARLS (D. Tanti) jumped out at the start.
Over the concluding stages DUSTY’S MAGIC (D. Craven) was initially shifted out to improve and then shifted in and hampered SNOWY WEATHER (P. Cullen). D. Craven was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Trainer Mr L. Smith reported that CAPTAIN KILOMETRE (D. Simmons) had sustained lacerations to the near hind leg during running.
