MIGHTY BLAZE was a late scratching, at 11.24 a.m., by order of the stewards acting on veterinary advice. A veterinary certificate was furnished.

The start was delayed when QUESADILLA (D. Evans) proved difficult to load. Connections were advised that a further warning had been placed on the barrier manners of QUESADILLA.

QUESADILLA (D. Evans) was held up and unable to obtain clear running from the 650 metres to the 250 metres.

DR FELINE (Apprentice R. McMahon) was unable to obtain clear running from the 400 metres to the 300 metres.

When questioned about the run of DAMASCUS CALLING, Apprentice M. Palmer explained that the gelding raced ungenerously in the early stages and when put under pressure from the 600 metres failed to respond to his riding and was disappointing.

Race 2: The Daily Mercury Maiden Handicap - 1250 metres
1st - MR NATCH 2nd - MIGHT RECITE 3rd - HIT AND MIST 4th - PRINGLE’S GIRL

As R. Barone was to be overweight, C. Beets was substituted as the rider of PRETTY SWISH.

VALLETA CITY (D. Lloyd) was slow to begin.

Near the 900 metres HIT AND MIST (D. Evans) was steadied away from the heels of PRETTY SWISH (C. Beets).

Approaching the 700 metres MIGHT RECITE (App. G. McKeon) was eased from the heels of PRINGLE’S GIRL (P. Cullen).

Shortly after entering the straight HIT AND MIST (D. Evans) had to be eased when crowded for room by MR NATCH (Apprentice L. Fyfe), which shifted in when not quite clear. Apprentice Fyfe was severely reprimanded and advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.

When questioned about the performance of VALETTA CITY, which compounded in the straight, jockey D. Lloyd explained that the horse raced greenly throughout and in the straight was unable to obtain clear running.

Race 3: Mackay Cup Sponsors Club Class 1 Handicap - 1500 metres
1st - FLUFIES REEF 2nd - EMMBOWEN 3rd - HAIL TO RANSOM 4th - MY MAREMOSSO

CLEAR INTENT (G. Cullen) and SPY CHASE (C. Beets) were fractious in the barriers.

Joining the course proper FLUFFIES REEF (Apprentice M. Palmer) shifted in to be racing inside the line of the running rail and when shifted out made contact with CLEAR INTENT (Apprentice R. McMahon).

About the 1200 metres HAIL TO RANSOM (P. Cullen) improved up onto the heels of runners in front and was eased.

Approaching the 900 metres SPY CHASE (C. Beets) shifted in slightly, obliging HAIL TO RANSOM (P. Cullen) to race in restricted room. At the same time CLEAR INTENT (Apprentice R. McMahon), which improved up onto the heels of EMMBOWEN (G. Cullen), shifted out momentarily and made contact with HAIL TO RANSOM, which was taken out onto the heels of SPY CHASE and had to be steadied.

Following the race trainer D. Crouch reported that FLUFFIES REEF (Apprentice M. Palmer) had lost its near fore plate during running.

Race 4: Mackay Cup Sponsors Club QTIS 3-Year-Old Class 1 Handicap - 1050 metres
1st - SPEEDY AFFAIR 2nd - ISIS QUEEN 3rd - BAYSIDE STAR 4th - BIG FISH

SEQUALO BUCK was a late scratching, at 11.24 a.m., by order of the stewards acting on veterinary advice. Trainer Mr P. Dwyer furnished a veterinary certificate.

As R. Barone was to be overweight, D. Green was substituted as the rider of VETUBRA.

Stewards considered an objection lodged by Jockey P. Cullen, the rider of SPEEDY AFFAIR, which dead-heated for first, against ISIS QUEEN being declared equal first, alleging interference in the first 100 metres of the race. During the inquiry stewards took evidence from both riders and Mr M. Connor, trainer of SPEEDY AFFAIR. Mrs R. Binder, trainer and owner of ISIS QUEEN, was unavailable to attend the inquiry, having left the course. After considering all the evidence, and having in mind that the two horses dead-heated, stewards upheld the protest when they found that soon after the start SPEEDY AFFAIR, which had been slow to begin, was hampered when crowded for room by ISIS QUEEN, which shifted in slightly. Shortly after this incident ISIS QUEEN again shifted in and inconvenienced SPEEDY AFFAIR, which was eased. Accordingly, the placings were amended to read: 1st SPEEDY AFFAIR; 2nd ISIS QUEEN; 3rd BAYSIDE STAR; 4th BIG FISH. Subsequently D. Lloyd was reprimanded for permitting ISIS QUEEN to shift in shortly after the start and inconvenience SPEEDY AFFAIR. Trainer Ms R. Binder was reminded of her obligation to remain on course until the prescribed time or alternatively until given permission to leave by the Chairman of Stewards.

SHE’S A SENSATION (Apprentice G. McKeon) began awkwardly.

At about the 150 metres SHE’S A SENSATION (Apprentice G. McKeon) raced erratically when placed under pressure, shifted out and bumped SPEEDY AFFAIR (P. Cullen). SHE’S A SENSATION then continued to race ungenerously and shifted in on several occasions.

A. Patillo (BIG FISH) and D. Evans (BAYSIDE STAR) were reminded of their obligation to ride their mounts out at least hands and heels to the finish of the race.

Race 5: Maguires Hotel Class 2 Handicap - 1250 metres
1st - SLICE OF THE PIE 2nd - SHADDOCK 3rd - WHAT HAPPENED 4th - CAPTAIN KILOMETRE

As a result of the delay in the declaration of correct weight following the protest in Race 4, the starting time for this race was amended from 2.59 p.m. to 3.14 p.m.

As R. Barone was to be overweight, D. Evans was substituted as the rider of WHAT HAPPENED.

In the middle stages OLD GOLD FOR ME (C. Beets) was obliged to race wide.

1st - DICTATE PLAY 2nd - LARCENY 3rd - REPOSSESSION 4th - STRIDERITE

When the gates opened DANZIG WARRIOR (R. Barone) shifted out for some distance and inconvenienced DUSTY’S MAGIC (Apprentice M. Palmer), which had been slow to begin, which was obliged to steady off heels and was then shifted in for some distance.

In the early stages HOWLEY HALL (D. Green) was unable to secure clear running and between the 1250 metres and the 1100 metres was restrained.

In the early and middle stages DUSTY’S MAGIC (Apprentice M. Palmer) overraced.

In the early and middle stages CALAIS BOUND (P. Cullen) overraced and refused to settle until near the 600 metres.

Trainer Mr L. Wright was cautioned about having an unlicensed stablehand, Mr Brent Talbot, within the on-course stabling area for MAJOR THOMSON, Race 5.
