LATE RIDING CHANGES:

As Apprentice B. Hull was unavailable, the following substitutions were made: Race 1, K. Yoshida to ride BRAWNY JACK; Race 2, R. Barone to ride FOUR JACKS; Race 5, L. Morrison to ride END SONG; Race 6, A. Pattillo to ride LARCENY; Race 8, D. Crossland to ride RAIN KING.

As L. Timson was indisposed, L. Morrison was substituted as the rider of NOW MING in Race 2.

As P. Cullen was unavailable, the following substitutions were made: Race 1, R. Barone to ride VETUBRA; Race 5, K. Yoshida to ride FORGOT; Race 8, S. Katsidis to ride WOODIDIERE.

As Apprentice R. Plumb was unavailable Apprentice C. Pay was substituted as the rider of KAPELAS in Race 4.

Race 1: Robert Peel Jewellers Maiden Handicap - 1050 metres
1st - FROM THE TOP 2nd - SEEKING THE CROWN 3rd - JUST WAYTIN 4th - BRAWNY JACK

Trainer Mr P. Dwyer was fined $50 under A.R. 175(k) for negligently declaring A. Pattillo as the rider of STRATEGIC LASS, when A. Pattillo had already accepted the ride on APRIMADONNA.

STRATEGIC LASS (G. Michaels) began awkwardly.

VETUBRA (R. Barone) was slow to begin.

Shortly after the start SQUEEZE ME PLEASE (M. Bennett) shifted in and tightened APRIMADONNA (A. Pattillo), which was taken in onto PRETTY SWISH (L. Morrison), which in turn shifted out resulting in A. Pattillo having to restrain his mount and relinquish his position. At the same time FROM THE TOP (D. Evans) shifted in and hampered BRAWNY JACK (K. Yoshida), which was taken in and tightened MISTER CRAB (J. P. Stanley) in onto SQUEEZE ME PLEASE (M. Bennett), resulting in APRIMADONNA being further hampered. D. Evans was severely admonished.

Near the 600 metres MISTER CRAB (J. P. Stanley) shifted out abruptly, taking APRIMADONNA (A. Pattillo) wider.

Over the concluding stages BRAWNY JACK (K. Yoshida) shifted in under pressure, obliging its rider to stop riding and straighten his mount.

Trainer Mr D. Crouch reported that at its previous start MISTER CRAB (J. P. Stanley) got its tongue back and had difficulty breathing and had a similar problem in today’s event, however he was of the opinion that the horse may perform better at its next start.

Race 2: Brown & Bird Accountants QTIS Class 3 Handicap - 1250 metres
1st - SEQUALO BUCK 2nd - JUST NECKING 3rd - QUALO STAR 4th - FOUR JACKS

On returning to scale it was noted that CHABBAZ (D. Crossland), which had been fractious and struck its head in the barriers, had blood in its mouth.

In the middle stages SEQUALO BUCK (M. Bennett) overraced.

Rounding the home turn SPEEDY AFFAIR (G. Kliese) had to be eased when taken out onto the heels of AULD FRIEND (Apprentice C. Pay) by SEQUALO BUCK (M. Bennett) which shifted out slightly. The incident was accentuated by QUALO STAR (S. Watkin), which was racing to the inside of SEQUALO BUCK, being was eased out to improve.

Race 3: Boomerang Hotel QTIS Two-Year- Old Handicap - 1250 metres
1st - FLYING WOODPECKER 2nd - MILORA MAJOR 3rd - BONVOLONTE 4th - JAZZOOM

MILORA MAJOR (Apprentice C. Pay) began awkwardly.

On jumping BONVOLONTE (D. Evans) shifted out and bumped FLYING WOODPECKER (D. Crossland).

At the 250 metres MILORA MAJOR (Apprentice C. Pay), which was inclined to lay out, was steadied to avoid the heels of FLYING WOODPECKER (D. Crossland).

From about the 250 metres RUNNING SCARED (G. Booth) failed to run on and was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of RUNNING SCARED did not reveal any abnormality.

Race 4: Daily Mercury Class 2 Handicap - 1250 metres
1st - BIG DAVE 2nd - LINK HOGTHROB 3rd - SHIVER OF GOLD 4th - ZOOLANDER

Trainer Mr E. Chillemi was fined $100 under A. R. 175(k) for negligently declaring Apprentice R. Plumb as the rider of KAPELAS. Mr Chillemi was also cautioned for failing to notify the stewards of a replacement rider, and was advised that a similar breach of the Rules may result in a harsher penalty being imposed.

At about the 850 metres LUBERON (C. Schumacher) commenced to overrace and had to be eased to avoid the heels of BIG DAVE (R. Barone).

FORTIFIED (D. Evans) returned to scale with a broken tongue tie.

Race 5: MBB Queensland Class 1 Handicap - 1500 metres
1st - BELLO GINO 2nd - CHARNOOK 3rd - ROYAL REFORM 4th - FORGOT

Trainer Mr G. Wehlow was fined $50 under A. R. 59A for failing to present the identification papers for SERIOUS HERO. SERIOS HERO was identified by the brands and markings and permitted to start. However, Mr Wehlow was advised that following today’s event the gelding will be barred from competing at licensed meetings until he produces the papers for the horse.

FORGOT (K. Yoshida) became fractious after being placed in the barriers.

At the start UNBRIDLED LOVE (D. Green) shifted in and brushed SPEAK OF SUCCESS (D. Evans).

Near the 450 metres CHARNOOK (M. Bennett) was eased when disappointed for a run inside AMBERACE (M. Dale).

Leaving the 200 metres ORBOSTIENNE (G. Michaels) and SHESHALLSHINE (S. Watkin) were held up and unable to obtain clear running.

After riding CHARNOOK in this race M. Bennett was examined by the Club’s medical officers and declared fit to fulfil his further engagements.

Race 6: XXXX Gold Class 6 Handicap - 1500 metres
1st - SHAKESPEARIAN 2nd - DEBONAIR 3rd - LINDY’S GROOM 4th - DORIAN

MISS JUBA (G. Kliese) was reluctant to be loaded into the barriers. Trainer Mr D. Crouch, representing trainer Mr A. Homann, was advised that the mare was barred from competing at licensed meetings until it performs to the satisfaction of stewards in an official jump-out.

Shortly after the start SCHOONER OR LATER (G. Michaels) shifted in slightly and hampered WISE THOUGHTS (S. Watkin).

When the pace steadied approaching the 1200 metres DEBONAIR (D. Lloyd) and RUSTY GOLD (M. Bennett) overraced and got their head up.

For some distance after the 1100 metres TARA’S SONG (L. Morrison) overraced and got its head up.

Approaching the 200 metres DEBONAIR (D. Lloyd) was inconvenienced when racing tight between THUNDER TIME (S. Morris) and DORIAN (Apprentice C. Pay).

Race 7: City Pacific Finance Newmarket Handicap - 1250 metres
1st - KAS NEDIYM 2nd - TOWN PLAYER 3rd - VICTORY SIREN 4th - PITTAPADDY

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow Jockey L. Morrison, the rider of VICTORY SIREN which finished third, to view the official video films. Subsequently stewards considered an objection lodged by L. Morrison against TOWN PLAYER (J. Stephens) being declared second, alleging interference at about the 200 metres. After taking evidence from the parties involved and viewing the official video films stewards dismissed the protest when they found that near the 200 metres TOWN PLAYER had crossed VICTORY SIREN, which then improved up onto that horse’s heels and had to be restrained and shifted outwards.

At the 400 metres JAZZ FUND (K. Yoshida) was unable to obtain clear running and had to be restrained off the heels of WESTERN DOWNS (G. Kliese).

Race 8: QRSE Hedley Liquor North Queensland Derby 3-&-4 Year-Old Class 4 Handicap - 1800 metres
1st - JUMPIN’ JARED 2nd - DINI WHO 3rd - LAMISTER 4th - RAIN KING

Prior to the running of the race Mr D. Crouch, trainer of GOLD TRUCE, informed stewards that he would be instructing Jockey D. Evans to race wide in the back straight, if possible, as he was of the opinion that, as the track may have been affected by rain, this would be the best racing surface.

On two occasions after being placed in the barriers SAHARA SEA (G. Michaels) broke through, was quickly restrained, examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. SAHARA SEA was then slow to get into stride.

Rounding the home turn WOODIDIERE (S. Katsidis) was held up for clear running and then failed to run on.

In the straight DIFFERENTIAL (R. Barone) was inclined to lay in. Jockey R. Barone informed the stewards that the horse failed to run on from the 200 metres.

GENERAL:

Following the running of the final event on today’s program, stewards inquired into a complaint lodged by Steward Mr W. Booshand against Licensed Trainer Mr D. Crouch in regard to an alleged incident in the vicinity of the Stewards Room. After hearing submissions from both parties and taking evidence from various witnesses, stewards took no action in relation to the complaint.
