LATE RIDING CHANGES:
When K. Yoshida failed to arrive on course because of transport difficulties, the following substitutions were made: Race 6, G. Farrer to ride MOURVEDRE; Race 7, M. Dale to ride GOLD EYE; Race 8, P. Cullen to ride LIEUTENANT GENERAL.
As M. Young was to be overweight, the following substitutions were made: Race 1, D. Evans to ride MR NATCH; Race 3, D. Whitmore to ride CAUGHT A YABBIE; Race 4, D. Green to ride ISLAND ANNA. Subsequently M. Young was fined a total of $150 under A.R. 120(b).
After riding AMBERACE in Race 2, G. Farrer became indisposed and was stood down from his further engagements. The following substitutions were made: Race 3, P. Cullen to ride NERO’S FIDDLE; Race 4, N. Evans to ride CRUISING; Race 5, Apprentice R. Plumb to ride EXPLOSIVE GIRL; Race 6, D. Evans to ride MOURVEDRE; Race 7, D. Johnston to ride BOURVERIE’S JEST; Race 8, R. Barone to ride AULD FRIEND.
After riding CAUGHT A YABBIE, which fell near the 850 metres in Race 3, D. Whitmore was unable to fulfil his further engagements and the following substitutions were made: Race 5, P. Cullen to ride PRIDE OF SEQUALO; Race 8, Apprentice T. Bannon to ride POWER LION as no other suitable senior rider was available.
Race 1: AFS Pharmacy Class 3 Handicap - 1800 metres
1st - KINGLINESS 2nd - MR NATCH 3rd - BROWNSVILLE GIRL 4th - NORTH FIELD
RED PYRAMID (D. Green) was slow to begin.
At the start FOREVER BILL (R. Barone) shifted out and bumped FLINDERS FLYER (D. Whitmore).
NORTH FIELD (J. P. Stanley) began awkwardly, then in the early and middle stages overraced and was obliged to race wide from the 800 metres.
Following the race trainer Mr A. Jenkinson reported that BROWNSVILLE GIRL (N. Evans) had been galloped on behind during the event and was treated by the Club’s veterinary surgeon, who reported that the mare had sustained a small skin wound to the right hind leg.
Race 2: Mastermyne Class 5 Handicap - 1500 metres
1st - PROTOTYPE 2nd - AMBERACE 3rd - TARA’S SONG 4th - HUNTER SUPREME
P. Cullen, the rider of UNIVERSAL LAD, reported that approaching the 1200 metres the gelding attempted to improve where there was insufficient room and had to be restrained away from the heels of PROTOTYPE (M. Usher). UNIVERSAL LAD then commenced to overrace, got its head up and in his opinion failed to handle today’s track conditions.
After riding AMBERACE in this race Jockey G. Farrer became indisposed and was stood down from his further engagements. Jockey Farrer was advised that he must present a medical certificate of fitness prior to being permitted to ride again.
Race 3: City Pacific Maiden Handicap - 1050 metres
1st - LITTLE TOFFY 2nd - ATAGULL 3rd - STONESTEPPINGKEV 4th - NERO’S FIDDLE
Trainer Mr D. Durand was fined $50 under L.R. 42(2) for presenting SHACKLES (W. Binder) in the enclosure with other than its approved gear.
At about the 850 metres VONNY THE PIPER (D. Evans) shifted out and hampered ATAGULL (M. Usher), which was taken out across the running of CAUGHT A YABBIE (D. Whitmore). At the same time MOMBASSA (N. Evans) shifted in and dictated LUKANE (R. Barone) inwards. As a result of the shift from inside and outside, CAUGHT A YABBIE clipped the heels of ATAGULL, knuckled and dislodged D. Whitmore. Stewards were unable to attribute responsibility for the incident to any one horse or rider and therefore took no further action. Jockey D. Whitmore (CAUGHT A YABBIE) was examined by the ambulance officer and was unable to fulfil his further engagements. Jockey Whitmore was advised that he must provide a satisfactory medical clearance prior to being permitted to ride again. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the gelding had not sustained any significant injury.
Jockey R. Barone reported that approaching the 600 metres LUKANE, which had been obliged to race wide, slipped behind badly and then continued to race wide for the remainder of the event.
Race 4: The Daily Mercury Class 2 Handicap - 1050 metres
1st - NO TRICKS 2nd - PRETTY ENOUGH 3rd - TENZERO 4th - ALBERGINIA
Jockey G. Michaels, the rider of TENZERO, reported that the gelding slipped behind on jumping.
In the early and middle stages CRUISING (N. Evans) overraced.
Near the 400 metres TENZERO (G. Michaels) was disappointed for a run inside KENDEL FLYER (Apprentice T. Bannon). Following the race trainer Mr F. Crick reported that KENDEL FLYER had been galloped on behind. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the gelding had sustained skin lacerations to the right hind leg.
Race 5: Onesteel Reinforcing Class 6 Plate - 1050 metres
1st - MY CHARLIE 2nd - EXPLOSIVE GAL 3rd - RELOADED 4th - KAPITZA
On the way to the barriers SPEEDEX (Apprentice D. Carrigg) struck the outside running rail. After arriving behind the barriers SPEEDEX was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.
HIGH RANGER (Apprentice L. Dillon), which was leaning on the outside of the barriers, began awkwardly and lost ground.
For a number of strides near the 900 metres ST SPARTICA (N. Evans) got its head up and raced ungenerously.
At about the 850 metres EXPLOSIVE GAL (Apprentice R. Plumb) was crowded for room inde SUDDEN STRIKE (M. Cullen).
Jockey D. Green reported that rounding the turn at the 600 metres RELOADED slipped behind.
Following the race trainer Mr P. Neilson reported that the off hind leg of SUDDEN STRIKE (M. Cullen) had been galloped on.
After the running of this race stewards and a number of representatives of the jockeys inspected the track, in particular in the vicinity of the 600 metres. Following this examination all parties agreed to continue with the meeting.
Race 6: Amalgamated Pest Control Class 4 Handicap - 1250 metres
1st - MAN OF ILLUSION 2nd - BIG DAVE 3rd - TOP SPIRIT 4th - PORTAL
A post-race examination of REJECTED (D. Green) did not reveal any abnormalities.
Race 7: Professionals Mackay Open Handicap - 1250 metres
1st - CAMBOOYA 2nd - MOT D’OR 3rd - OUT MATISSE 4th - MIGHTY STRONGHOLD
The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow Jockey M. Usher, the rider of MOT D’OR which finished second, to examine the official photo finish.
Near the 550 metres BOURVERIE’S JEST (D. Johnston) lost its footing and fell, dislodging D. Johnston. A post-race veterinary examination of BOURVERIE’S JEST revealed that the horse had sustained skin abrasions to the groin region.
After the running of this event stewards received a delegation from the jockeys, who advised that all jockeys present at the meeting were of the opinion that it would be unsafe to continue. In the circumstances stewards abandoned the remaining race on the program at 5.05 p.m.
Race 8: Currey’s QTIS Class 1 Handicap - 1250 metres
1st - 2nd - 3rd - 4th -
It was noted that the prize money shown in the Race Book was inaccurate and that the correct distribution was as follows: 1st, $9,900; 2nd, $2,950; 3rd, $1,450; 4th $400. A public announcement to this effect was made on course.
