Supplementary Report:
Townsville – Saturday 3rd July 2010
Race 7:
Trainer E. Covell advised stewards that he was at a loss to explain the disappointing performance of SEA ZULU, except to say that the horse may have failed to handle the short back-up from its last race on the 25th of June 2010. Mr. Covell reported that SEA ZULU had pulled up fine following the event. Notwithstanding this he would arrange for his veterinary surgeon to take some blood samples within the next two days and undertook to advise stewards should anything of note arise from the tests.
Race 1: WIN TELEVISION MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1250 metres
1st - RAPID FLOW 2nd – SECRET BOUNTY 3rd - A CLASS ABOVE 4th – A SIX TO WIN
TAHINGA (M. Usher) and SOVEREIGN SPIRIT (A. Coome) were slow to begin.
Shortly after the start COOLANURE (T. O’Hara), PAY DAY BOY (S. Shearold) and A CLASS ABOVE (T. Bannon) were tightened for room between DIAMOND DELANEY (W. D’Avila) and A SIX TO WIN (R. Wiggins), which shifted out.
Approaching the 50 metres PAY DAY BOY (S. Sheargold) improved up onto the heels of TRAMONTI (b. Stewart), shifted in and tightened the running of TAHINGA (M. Usher).
TRIBAL HORSE (J. Babarovich) raced wide throughout.
Race 2: QTIS 600 TWO YEARS-OLD HANDICAP – 1250 metres:
1st - CRAIGLEA TINA 2nd - CRAIGLEA ROYALE 3rd - CRAIGLEA EDGE 4th – CRAIGLEA SHERRY
Trainer Mr P. Fleming pleaded guilty to a charge under A.R. 140A in that he presented CRAIGLEA SHERRY and CRAIGLEA TINA with the incorrect saddles. Mr Fleming was fined the sum of $200.
The start was delayed when CRAIGLEA SHERRY (T. Bannon) had to be resaddled behind the barriers.
The start was further delayed when CAM’S MAGIC (S. Sheargold), which was fractious in the barriers, had to be examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon. CAM’S MAGIC was subsequently passed suitable to race.
CRAIGLEA SHERRY (T. Bannon) and IRON EAGLE (M. Usher) were slow to begin.
SHANTY SHAMROCK (R. McMahon) and CRAIGLEA EDGE (A. Coome) raced wide throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation in respect of the seemingly disappointing performance of DAMN GOOD IDEA. Jockey R. Wiggins stated that in the early stages the gelding over-raced when he attempted to settle the horse, and when placed under pressure near the 500 metres it began to lose ground and, as he was of the opinion that the horse may have got its tongue over the bit, he elected to ease it down in the straight. Trainer Mr T. Cook reported to the stewards that he was of the opinion that the horse may have swallowed its tongue during the race and consequently he intends to add a tongue tie to the horse’s gear for its next start. A post-race veterinary examination of DAMN GOOD IDEA did not reveal any significant abnormalities.
When questioned about the tactics he adopted on CRAIGLEA EDGE, Jockey A. Coome explained that the gelding settled back in the field, in accordance with its usual racing pattern, however approaching the 800 metres, when IRON EAGLE (M. Usher) raced up onto the heels of DAMN GOOD IDEA (R. Wiggins) and shifted out abruptly, he was forced wider on the track and then raced three wide for the remainder of the event. The explanation was noted.
Race 3: DAILY MERCURY CLASS 3 PLATE – 1050 metres:
1st – PUB TORQUE 2nd – INTANGIBLE ASSET 3rd – MONETITE 4th – BRAWLED
SONNS SUZAY sustained injuries in an accident en route to the course and was withdrawn by order of the stewards at 2.05 p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on SONNS SUZAY be refunded in full and that all successful bets with bookmakers prior to the withdrawal of SONNS SUZAY be paid less the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of tickets: win 7¢, place 8¢.
In the early part of the straight MONETITE (T. Bannon) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.
Over the concluding stages Jockey R. McMahon had difficulty fully testing SMALL CONCEPT when racing in restricted room to the inside of MONETITE (T. Bannon)
ORIENTELLE (J. Babarovich) and LARRY’S SONG (C. Whiteley) raced wide throughout.
Race 4: XXXX GOLD CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1500 metres:
1st – BARAMUL BULLET 2nd – KING’S FLYER 3rd - LATARGIRL 4th – TRAWLER
At the start LATAR GIRL (A. Coome) was tightened for room between HOT SHOT HENRY (T. O’Hara) and LORD DOWNER (A. Pattillo), which shifted out.
CRAIGLEA ROCKET (K. Wharton) was slow to begin.
In the early and middle stages PEBS MAGIC (R. Mules) raced wide.
Rounding the home turn HOT SHOT HENRY (T. O’Hara) had to be steadied away from the heels of WOODEN EYE JOE (R. McMahon), which shifted out.
Near the 300 metres CRAIGLEA ROCKET (K. Wharton) had to be steadied away from the heels of DJAVA KNIGHT (S. Watkin), which shifted out. Jockey S. Watkin was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Approaching the 200 metres DJAVA KNIGHT (S. Watkin) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of LORD DOWNER (A. Pattillo), which shifted out slightly. Jockey Pattillo was advised to exercise more care.
Stewards sought an explanation in respect to the tactics adopted by Jockey C. Whiteley, the rider of FUZZALAMA, during the middle stages of the event, when the horse was positioned at the tail of the field. Jockey Whiteley explained that due to the fast tempo in the first half of the race, the field was stretched over a considerable distance and he was reluctant to improve to the outside and he was of the opinion that he would have had to cover too much extra ground around the field. Jockey Whiteley added that runners forward of him were peeling off and he therefore elected to improve his position along the running rail. He said that approaching the 300 metres he was disappointed for a run between CRAIGLEA ROCKET (K. Wharton) and LORD DOWNER (A. Pattillo), which shifted out, and consequently he was obliged to alter course in an endeavour to obtain clear running. He stated further that he was again held up for clear running over the concluding stages.
Post-race veterinary examinations of FUZZALAMA (C. Whiteley) did not reveal any significant abnormalities.
Trainer Mr S. Kendrick reported to stewards that in his opinion APUCKSHUNUBBEE ((B. Stewart) will be better suited in races over a longer distance than today’s event.
Race 5: PIONEER LAKES CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1250 netres:
1st – EXORCIZE 2nd – MISTABLISTA 3rd - GOD’S WINDOW 4th – WANNABEAWALLABY
Near the 1000 metres BLACK ANGUS (C. Whiteley) had to be restrained to avoid the heels of RED AURUM (T. Bannon), which shifted in when not quite clear. Jockey T. Bannon was reprimanded and advised that in future she would be expected to leave sufficient room for runners to her inside.
Approaching the 700 metres GOD’S WINDOW (T. O’Hara) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of RED AURUM (T. Bannon).
Leaving the 100 metres IT’S ELEMENTARY (S. Watkin), which was weakening, had to be steadied away from the heels of FLYER BELLE (I. Toward), which shifted in.
IT’S ELEMENTARY (S. Watkin) raced wide throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation from Jockey B. Stewart for the seemingly poor performance of BOULDERS. Jockey Stewart stated that the horse performed below expectations and failed to respond to his riding when put under pressure in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination of BOULDERS did not reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer Mr S. Kendrick advised stewards that BOULDERS will now be sent for a spell.
Stewards sought an explanation from Jockey D. Missen, the rider of GREAT GRETZKY, in respect to his apparent failure to improve his position between WANNABEAWALLABY (A. Pattillo) and FLYING BELLE (I. Toward) and onto the back of EXORCIZE (R. McMahon) rounding the home turn when there appeared to be an opportunity to do so. Jockey Missen stated that he had considered moving to the outside of FLYING BELLE approaching the home turn, but when he noticed that horse laying out, he elected to remain to the inside of that horse. He said that he considered improving forward onto the back of EXORCIZE and he was of the opinion that the run between FLYING BELLE and WANNABEAWALLABY had been reduced due to WANNABEAWALLABY shifting out, which resulted in his being unable to improve the position of GREAT GRETZKY . He added that he was unable to fully test GREAT GRETZKY until the 200 due to there being no clear running between IT’S ELEMENTARY (S.Watkin and FLYING BELLE (I. Toward). The explanation was noted.
Race 6: MACKAY PROPERTY MAINTENANACE 2010 MACKAY NEWMARKET HANDICAP – 1250 metres:
1st - FASLIYEV DANCER 2nd – DON CAUDILLO 3rd - REIGNING TO WIN 4th – HEART
ANDAMON (I. Toward) was slow to begin.
In the early and middle stages HEART (W. D”Avila) raced wide.
Jockey R. McMahon reported that FASLIYEV DANCER failed to must its customary early speed and got further back in the race than had been anticipated.
GOBOU (D. Missen), DON CAUDILLO (B. Cross), and FASLIYEV DANCER (R. McMahon) raced wide throughout.
Near the 100 metres Jockey W. D’Avila, the rider of HEART, accidentally dropped his whip.
Race 7: VISUAL CONSTRUCTIONS CLASS 6 HANDICAP – 1500 metres:
1st - DELAGO MONEY 2nd – ALYTAAAT 3rd - CRAIGLEA BLONDIE 4th – RED AMIGO
DELAGO MONEY (A. Coome) was slow to begin.
Leaving the 100 metres LADY HYBROW (S. Sheargold) had to be steadied when disappointed for a run to the inside of MONTSERRAT (C. Whiteley).
KELANCE (M. Usher) and CRAIGLEA BLONDIE (K. Wharton) raced wide throughout.
KELANCE (M. Usher), CRAIGLEA BLONDIE (K. Wharton), and LA PIAZZA (T. O’Hara) raced wide throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation from Jockey I. Toward in regard to the seeming poor performance of PERSHINKO. Jockey Toward stated that he rode the mare along in the early stages in an endeavour to take up a forward position, in according with his instructions. He said that the mare was inclined to race keenly in the middle stages and when placed under pressure from the 500 metres failed to respond to his riding. He added that in his opinion there may have been something amiss with the horse. Trainer Mr. D. Hansen informed stewards that it would be his recommendation that the mare be retired from racing. Stewards informed Mr Hansen that if the mare were to continue racing it must perform to the satisfaction of stewards in an official barrier trial prior to racing again.
