SUPPLEMENTARY REPORTS:

Townsville Turf Club 25th January 2011: Race 2: Racing Queensland QTIS 2-Y-O Handicap – 1000 metres

Trainer T. Rowe reported that a superficial abrasion to the off hind cannon of FRICTION during the event had become infected the day after the event. Mr Rowe said that the infection had failed to respond to treatment and FRICTION had to be euthanased on humane grounds.

Trainer’s representative S. Johnston advised stewards that CRAIGLEA MARLENA had been diagnosed with Ross River Fever. Mr Johnston added that the horse had undergone treatment for that condition and that it his intention to continue with the gelding’s preparation at the Townsville meeting on Tuesday next, 15th February 2011.

Mackay Turf Club 1st February: Race 2: Global Product Search Open Handicap – 1500 metres

Trainer L. Rowe advised stewards that CANNYCLIMB was exhibiting the effects of a virus following the race. Mr Rowe was of the opinion that this may have contributed to the horse’s poor performance. He informed the stewards that the gelding will now be sent for a short spell.

Race 1: Carpet One & Tiles Mackay Class 1 Handicap - 1500 metres
1st – SIR VAN TEES 2nd – CRAIGLEA SHERRY 3rd – BALUSTRADE 4th – CRAIGLEA RAWIE

Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer M. Barnham for the late declaration of App. C. Pye as the rider of Sir Van Tees.

CRAIGLEA SHERRY (A. Spinks) was a little slow to begin.

From the 1300 metres until approximately the 1000 metres SIR VAN TEES (App. C. Pye) over-raced.

Stewards sought an explanation from Jockey D. Missen regarding the performance of BALUSTRADE. Jockey Missen stated that the gelding had travelled well throughout the race, but when placed under pressure prior to the 500 metres did not respond as expected and in his opinion failed to handle the track conditions. Trainer R. Chillemi agreed with Jockey Missen’s comments.

Stewards questioned trainer M. Barnham regarding the apparent improved performance of SIR VAN TEES (App. C. Pye). Mr Barnham stated that the distance of today’s event was more suitable, the gelding had worked well since its previous start and he had expected SIR VAN TEES to be competitive in this event.

Stewards downgraded the track to a HEAVY (8), retrospective to this race.

Race 2: John Love Electrical Maiden Handicap - 1250 metres
1st – BLUMBERG 2nd FORECLOSURE 3rd NOT LEGAL 4th - WESTERN YORK

Winters confirmed to stewards that the gelding will now be sent for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination of HIGH PAYOFF did not reveal any abnormalities.

Stewards sought an explanation from Jockey D. Missen about the performance of REPEATEDLY. Jockey Missen stated that the horse did not travel well at any stage throughout the event and failed to handle the heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination of REPEATEDLY revealed the gelding to be lame in the off-fore leg. Trainer R. Chillemi informed stewards that REPEATEDLY will now be sent for a spell. Stewards will advise Mr. Chillemi to provide a veterinary certificate of fitness prior to its next start.

Race 3: Mather Concrete Class 3 Handicap - 1050 metres
1st – TAMILDA 2nd CAPTAIN DARLING 3rd FLYER BELLE 4th - DISTANT ZONE

DISTANT ZONE (A. Merritt) began awkwardly and lost some ground.

FLYER BELLE (K. Wharton) was slow to begin.

Following the race trainer S. Kendrick reported that in the past REFLECTION OF JADE (App. Wood) had shown that it did not appreciate rain-affected tracks. Mr Kendrick said that, in light of its performance today, in future consideration will be given to not starting the horse on tracks that are rain-affected.

Race 4: Taylors Solicitors Maiden Handicap - 1050 metres
1st – LUCKY MONEY 2nd – SEETHROUGH 3rd POWER PERSONIFIED 4th – ALL SAINTS GIRL

NABISON (N. Patchett) and SAMARA ROCKET (App. C. Pye) were slow to begin.

At approximately the 700 metres POWER PERSONIFIED (D. Missen) shifted in and bumped SAMARA ROCKET (App. C. Pye), resulting in BLUE PEREGRINE (T. Bannon) having to be steadied from the heels of SAMARA ROCKET and shifted out, taking ALL SAINTS GIRL (G. Lee) and SHEZIGURU (K. Wharton) wider.

At about the 550 metres POWER PERSONIFIED (D. Missen) rolled in momentarily, placing SAMARA ROCKET (App. C. Pye) in restricted room and being steadied.

When asked about the seemingly poor performance of POWER PERSONIFIED, Jockey D. Missen said that the horse did not feel comfortable in the going between the 700 metres and the 300 metres, however when shifted wider on the track worked home reasonably well.

Race 5: Winston Group QTIS 2-Y-O Handicap - 1050 metres
1st CRAIGLEA SHARNIA 2nd ROCKET ON POP 3rd CRAIGLEA MUSTANG 4th - CRAIGLEA ROMEO

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow Jockey D. Simmons to view the official patrol film, with a view to lodging an objection against CRAIGLEA SHANIA (App. C. Pye) being declared the winner. After viewing the films Jockey Simmons elected not to lodge an objection and stewards declared correct weight.

MASSURI (B. Binder) began awkwardly.

CRAIGLEA MAC (T. Bannon) was slow to begin.

MAZA BOY (App. M. Wood) began awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with CRAIGLEA SHARNIA (App. C. Pye).

After being placed in the barriers CHABAL (A. Merritt) became fractious and reared.

PREACHER MAN (D. Simmons) was slow to begin.

MAGIC ROCKER (App. C. Pye) was slow into stride.

Stewards sought an explanation from Jockey D. Missen as to the performance of ROYAL CAUSEWAY, in particular regarding the tactics adopted in the early stages. Jockey Missen explained that he had been instructed to take up a position off the pace; however after beginning well he considered improving forward to be mid-midfield, however REVE D’OR (App M. Wood) had improved to his inside and he elected to restrain and take cover. Jockey Missen added that ROYAL CAUSEWAY had failed to handle today’s prevailing track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

Race 7: A.J.K Contracting Pty Ltd Class 6 Handicap - 1250 metres
1st GODS WINDOW 2nd JAD 3rd TIMECALL 4th - GREMMO

Jockey A. Spinks reported that in the straight he became concerned with the action of TESTATUDE and from the 200 metres he did not ride the horse with his usual vigour and eased it down. Stewards will interview trainer L. Petersen in regard to the matter.

Race 8: Mackay Car Wash Class 2 Handicap - 1250 metres
1st ONWARDS’N’UPWARDS 2nd GALAXY STALKER 3rd HUSSANA 4th - COUNTERIZE

Trainer R. Vale was fined $100 under L.R. 67 for failing to declare Jockey T. Bannon as the rider of BEAUTIFUL HAVANA by the prescribed time.

Stewards permitted GLADIATOR (A. Coome) to race without blinkers; part of the horse’s approved gear. Stewards will make further inquiries with the Trainers Service Centre.

When asked about the performance of HAWK ATTACK Jockey S. Watkin stated that the horse began awkwardly and bounded in the air. Jockey Watkin said he was obliged to race wider on the track due to the heavy going, and had improved in the middle stages of the event. He placed HAWK ATTACK under pressure leaving the 400m, and the gelding made ground in the straight. Jockey Watkins stated he was pleased with the effort. Stewards noted his comments.

Stewards gave Jockey D. Missen the opportunity to explain the performance of COUNTERIZE. Jockey Missen stated that he was of the opinion that the horse had performed fairly and, though it had previously handled the heavy track at Townsville, COUNTERIZE was under pressure to maintain its position from the 700 metres but worked home well in the straight. Trainer Mr Chillemi said that he was satisfied with the performance of COUNTERIZE given the condition of the track.

Apprentice M. Wood was found guilty of a charge under A.R. 145 in that he returned to scale on HUSSANA in excess of half a kilogram above his declared weight. Apprentice Wood was fined $200.
