SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT: MACKAY, 16TH APRIL 2011:
Race 4: Statewide Bearings QTIS 600 2-Y-) Plate – 1250 metres
When questioned as to the performance of HE’S SO TEMPTING, trainer B. Baker stated that in his opinion the gelding raced like a tired horse. Mr Baker indicated that HE’S SO TEMPTING will be given a short freshen up prior to its next race start.
Race 1: Payne Print QTIS 3-Y-O Maiden Handicap – 1050 metres
1st – SECRET TUNE 2nd – YUN FAT 3rd – THE SKATER 4th – LIGHTFEET LADY
The start was delayed when CITI ROUTE (L. Dillon) got its off hind leg up in the barrier. The gelding was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and cleared to take its place in the field.
As the start was effected LIGHTFEET LADY (A. Coome) jumped in the air and lost ground.
CITI ROUTE (L. Dillon) began awkwardly and lost ground, then over-raced in the early and middle stages and near the 600 metres had to be steadied from the heels of THE SKATER (T. Bannon).
In the early stages COSHO (S. Sheargold) over-raced.
SECRET TUNE (D. Missen) raced wide early.
At the 600 metres CITI ROUTE (L. Dillon) and YUN FAT (App. C. Pye) raced fiercely.
Approaching the 400 metres LIGHTFEET LADY (A. Coome) had to be eased from the heels of COSHO (S. Sheargold).
Near the 200 metres FOREBODING (N. Patchett) shifted out and bumped DREAM ‘N’ IGNITE (J. Stanley).
In the straight YUN FAT (App. C. Pye) shifted out under pressure.
DREAM ‘N’ IGNITE (J. Stanley) and FOREBODING (N. Patchett) raced wide throughout.
When questioned as to the performance of DREAM ‘N’ IGNITE, which performed below market expectations, Jockey J. Stanley expressed his disappointment in the filly’s performance. Jockey Stanley explained that he had been instructed to ride the gelding in a forward position if possible, however he was unable to do so when SECRET TUNE (D. Missen), which was drawn to his outside, pushed forward at the start and as a consequence he attempted to gain cover but was obliged to race wide for the majority of the event. Jockey Stanley was of the view that the filly was lacking in race fitness and this, combined with the fact that he was required to race wide for the majority of the event were the reasons for the horse’s disappointing performance. Trainer M. Attard agreed with the comments of Jockey Stanley. The explanations were noted. A post race veterinary examination of DREAM 'N' IGNITE failed to reveal any significant abnormalaties.
Race 2: Seabreeze Resort Hotel Weight-For-Age – 1050 metres:
1st – ASPIRAN 2nd – EMBRACING 3rd – WHARTON WILLIE 4th – LARRY’S SONG
Trainer S. Kendrick was fined $100 under L.R. 70(1) for the late declaration of App. C. Pye as the rider for ELASTANE.
Prior to the race trainer T. Cook reported that EMBRACING had been fractious in the tie-up stalls. The gelding was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and cleared to take its place in the field.
LARRY’S SONG (L. Dillon) began awkwardly.
From straightening until near the 200 metres EMBRACING (T. Bannon) was held up and unable to obtain clear running, and when shifted out to improve made contact with ELASTANE (App. C. Pye). Jockey T. Bannon was reminded of her obligation to ensure that she is clear of other runners before shifting ground.
Race 3: Trend Interior Carpet & Tiles Class 4 Handicap – 1250 metres
1st – SHELDON 2nd – CAPTAIN DARLING 3rd – TAORMINA 4th – SPEEDOMETER
The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow Jockey A. Coome to view the official patrol films, particularly rounding the home turn. After viewing the film Jockey Coome elected not to lodge a protest and correct weight was declared.
For a short distance leaving the 1000 metres SHELDON (L. Dillon) raced ungenerously.
For a short distance upon straightening SHELDON (L. Dillon) was held up for clear running.
Near the 200 metres CAPTAIN DARLING (App. C. Pye) shifted out of its own accord and as a result App. Pye had to stop riding and straighten her mount.
Upon returning to scale Jockey T. Bannon expressed her disappointment in the performance of TAMILDA and noted that the mare travelled well in the early stages and improved into the race in the middle stages, however peaked on its run at the top of the straight. Jockey Bannon said that in her opinion TAMILDA had failed to back up from its most recent start, in Townsville, which was the horse’s first start after a short freshen up.
When asked about the apparent improved performance of the winner, SHELDON, trainer R. Meek stated that at Emerald three starts ago, the horse was hampered over the concluding stages, which prevented SHELDON from finishing closer to the winner. Mr Meek said also that at its most recent starts SHELDON failed to handle the sand tracks, therefore he was of the view that the gelding appreciated the return to a grass surface, along with the addition of blinkers to its racing gear. The explanation was noted.
Race 4: Col Joy Training Maiden Handicap – 1250 metres:
1st – PARILLA 2nd – SHY YASEY 3rd – SWIFTLY BRAVE 4th – SKYDECK
Over the concluding stages PARILLA (T. Bannon) shifted out and bumped SWIFTLY BRAVE (L. Dillon).
FORECLOSURE (D. Missen) raced wide throughout.
Near the 600m DALIOSENN (J. Stanley) had to be checked and lost ground when tightened for room by SHY YASEY (N. Patchett) which shifted abruptly, in and away from FORECLOSURE (D. Missen), despite the efforts of its rider. At a subsequent inqiury the incident was attributed to the racing manners of SHY YASEY and as such no action was taken against any one rider.
When questioned, Jockey A. Coome expressed his disappointment with the performance of FURTIVELY and stated that despite travelling well in the early and middle stages, the gelding had resented its advertised racing gear, being a cross-over nose band, pacifiers and tongue-tie, and as a consequence failed to finish the race off as expected. Trainer S. Kendrick agreed with the comments of Jockey Coome and added that since arriving at his stable FURTIVELY had worked and trialled well without any of its advertised gear, and therefore that gear will be removed prior to the gelding’s next race start.
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of CORE WRITER, Apprentice A. Taylor stated that despite travelling well in the early and middle stages, the gelding failed to respond to her riding from the 500 metres and weakened noticeably in the home straight. Apprentice Taylor was unable to offer any tangible explanation for the performance. Trainer N. Coyne will be interviewed regarding the horse’s performance.
Between Races 4 and 5 a heavy shower of 6 ml, fell. Consequently the track rating was downgraded from a Dead (4) to a Slow (6) at 4.10 p.m.
Race 5: Reef Properties Class 1 Handicap – 1250 metres
1st – LUCKY MONEY 2nd – LITTLE VALENTINE 3rd – MONNIE 4th – HERITAGE STAR
After the running of this race, at 4.37 p.m., the track rating was downgraded to a Heavy (8) retrospectively.
LUCKY MONEY (T. Bannon) was slow to begin.
Near the 1000 metres IWANTIWANT (App. C. Pye), which had a tendency to over-race, improved onto the heels of HERITAGE STAR (J. Stanley) and had to be steadied.
Approaching the 200 metres LUCKY MONEY (T. Bannon) and LITTLE VALENTINE (App. A. Taylor) bumped when both horses shifted ground.
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of SPELLO, Jockey A. Coome stated that in the early stages he intended to take up a position with cover just behind the leaders, however was unable to do so and therefore allowed the gelding to roll forward and assume a position outside the leader. Jockey Coome added that despite travelling well in the early and middle stages, SPELLO dipped near the 600 metres and failed to handle the prevailing track conditions thereafter. Jockey Coome expressed his disappointment in the gelding’s performance. Trainer S. Kendrick stated that SPELLO was better suited in races over 1000 metres and this fact, combined with the heavy track conditions prevented the gelding from finishing off the race as expected. The explanation was noted.
Race 6: Sportspower Class 6 Plate – 1500 metres
1st – TIMECALL 2nd – HAWK ATTACK 3rd – OUR SCOOBY DOO 4th – POLROSSA
Trainer A. Bennett will be interviewed regarding the late declaration of W. Binder as the rider of INTENT.
Acting on a request by trainer S. Kendrick following the downgrading of the track rating, stewards permitted the late scratching, at 4.37 p.m. of PROM KNIGHT. As betting had not commenced on the event, no alterations to betting were required.
Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer J. Manzelmann for the late declaration of a rider for BODY DOUBLE. Following the late scratching of PROM KNIGHT, T. Bannon was declared as the rider of BODY DOUBLE.
In the early stages HAWK ATTACK (P. Cullen) raced wide before striding forward near the 900 metres to take up a position outside the leader.
Approaching the 1000 metres ROYAL THIEF (App. C. Pye) improved up onto the heels of INTENT (W. Binder) and had to be steadied.
Near the 200 metres OUR SCOOBY DOO (App. A. Taylor) was disappointed for a run between DAAD’S BOY (J. Stanley) and POLROSSA (A. Coome).
Approaching the 100 metres TIMECALL (N. Patchett) shifted in under pressure.
When questioned as to the performance of INTENT, which was having only its second start for the stable, Jockey W. Binder stated that he had been instructed to lead, if possible, however the gelding compounded badly over the concluding stages. Jockey Binder said that the heavy track conditions and lack of race fitness had contributed to the horse’s performance. Jockey Binder added that in his opinion INTENT would benefit from today’s run. Trainer A. Bennett will be interviewed as to the performance of INTENT.
