SUPPLEMENTARY REPORTS:

Mackay Saturday 9th July 2011:

On Saturday, 13 August 2011 stewards finalised an inquiry which had been opened following stewards confiscating several oral pastes from the stables of Ms O. Cairns during a random inspection on Saturday 9th July 2011. The inquiry was opened on the said date, at which point Ms Cairns indicated that it was her intention to administer the pastes to MATIYA’S PRIDE, ABUSKER, POPNAE and WANDERING STAR prior to those horses competing on that same day. The inquiry was then adjourned to allow the pastes to undergo analysis b the Racing Science Centre for the presence of any prohibited substances. The aforementioned horses were permitted to race, upon Ms Cairns’ undertaking that no medication had been administered to them on that day. The results of the said analysis indicated that the oral pastes did not contain any prohibited substances. Furthermore, the samples collected from the abovementioned horses on the day in question all returned negative results. As Ms Cairns had not breached any Australian Rule of Racing, stewards took no direct action, other than to remind Ms Cairns of her obligations under A.R. 178E not to administer any medication to a horse on race day prior to such horse running in a race.

Townsville, 2nd August 2011: Race 2: Jim Beam Class 3 Handicap, 1000 metres

Trainer Ms J. Russell was fined $100 under A.R.140B for presenting A TOUCH OF FROST to race with other than its approved gear, namely without a tongue tie.

Cairns 6th August 2011: Race 2: Cairns Steel Class 5 Handicap, 960 metres

Trainer J. Atkinson advised stewards that she would continue with the preparation of CANYON ROAD, after originally advising stewards that the gelding would be spelled following its performance in the above event. After reviewing the film of the race and speaking further with Jockey J. Stopps, Mrs Atkinson was of the opinion that CANYON ROAD had lost ground when taken wider rounding the home turn. Mrs Atkinson noted that CANYON ROAD performed best when racing in a forward position, and losing ground at that point of the race prevented the gelding from finishing off the race as expected. Therefore she was not overly disappointed with the performance of CANYON ROAD, considering that it was beaten by only 3.3 lengths and suffered further interference over the concluding stages.

Cairns 7th August 2011: Race 5: East Coast Traffic Controllers Class 1 Handicap, 1500 metres

When questioned as to the tactics and overall performance of SIMPLE TASK, Jockey F. Edwards stated that the gelding was inclined to race ungenerously in the early stages and he therefore elected to put pressure on SIMPLE TASK in the early stages so as to force it to race tractably. Jockey Edwards added that he was content to settle just behind the leader, FORECLOSURE (R. Tompson), however when Jockey Thompson slowed the tempo in the middle stages he allowed SIMPLE TASK, which was racing strongly at that point, to improve to the outside of FORECLOSURE. Jockey Edwards noted his disappointment in the overall performance of SIMPLE TASK and was of the view, based on the gelding’s two most recent starts, that it had come to the end of its campaign. Trainer N. Butler advised that following SIMPLE TASK’s performance he was of the opinion that the gelding raced flat and as such he had eased up on its work leading up to this event. In hindsight Mr Butler felt he may have overdone this approach, as SIMPLE TASK had pulled up after the event as if it needed the run. Mr Butler advised that he would continue with the gelding’s campaign, however if it again performed disappointingly, he would send it for a spell.

------------

Race 1: BULLIVANTS CLASS 1 PLATE 1050M
1ST – IMPALA 2ND – HIGH PAYOFF 3RD – JAZZSHINKO 4TH - BOSSY BOOTS

IMPALA (T. Bannon) was slow to begin.

Near the 900 metres HIDDEN REWARDS (App. K. Cross) began to race ungenerously and had a tendency to lay out, and continued to do so throughout the middle stages of the event.

At about the 200 metres JAZZSHINKO (S. Watkin) was held up on the heels of IMPALA (T. Bannon).

When asked as to the performance of CHOCOLATE AND LACE, Jockey A. Coome stated that he had been instructed to settle the mare in a forward position where it was comfortable. Jockey Coome said that CHOCOLATE AND LACE failed to travel well throughout the race and when placed under pressure leaving the 500 metres failed to respond to his riding and was disappointing. Trainer D.Johnston advised that it was his intention to retire the mare. The comments were noted. A post-race veterinary examination of CHOCOLATE AND LACE to be stepping short in front. D. Johnston was advised that he must furnish a veterinary clearance prior to CHOCOLATE AND LACE being permitted to race again.

Race 2: AFS FRIENDLY CARE PHARMACY CLASS 6 HANDICAP 1050M
1ST – ORIENTELLE 2ND – TAUPIN 3RD – HUSS 4TH – BLACK ANGUS

BLACK ANGUS (D. Simmons) began awkwardly.

Approaching the 900 metres BLACK ANGUS (D. Simmons) commenced to over-race and approaching the 800 metres had to be checked to avoid the heels of JAD (A. Coome) and lost ground.

When questioned as to the performance of JAD, Jockey A. Coome stated that the gelding travelled well until placed under pressure leaving the 500 metres, at which point it failed to respond to his riding. Jockey Coome was of the opinion that the gelding failed to handle the prevailing firm track conditions today. Trainer S. Kendrick agreed that JAD had failed to handle similar track conditions, as in the past JAD had shown a preference for soft track conditions. Mr Kendrick undertook to advise stewards should anything be amiss with the gelding in the days following the event.

When asked as to the seemingly disappointing performance of SPRINGBOK LAD, Jockey T. Bannon stated that although the gelding was caught wide for the majority of the event, she was of the opinion that SPRINGBOK LAD was better suited in races over a longer distance than today’s event.

Race 3: BLACK DUCK KITCHENS MAIDEN PLATE 1050M
1ST – JOHN’S SPECIAL 2ND – ELLE DANSAIT 3RD – NINETYSIX KRUG 4TH – SLICK SHOES

NINETYSIX KRUG (D. Tanti) and ROSIE’S BON BON (App. A. Taylor) were slow to begin.

Leaving the 800 metres ROSIE’S BON BON (App. A. Taylor) had to be restrained from the heels of LOUPETS (App. C. Pye), which was taken in by NINETYSIX KRUG (D. Tanti). Jockey D. Tanti was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

Approaching the 500 metres ROSIE’S BON BON (App. A. Taylor) raced in restricted room to the inside of LOUPETS (App. C. Pye), which was inclined to lay in.

In the home straight NOT LEGAL (N. Patchett) was inclined to lay in.

When questioned as to his riding of NOT LEGAL over the final 100 metres Jockey N. Patchett
Stated that he had placed the mare under pressure from rounding the home turn, however near the 100 metres NOT LEGAL had put in an awkward stride and, as he was of the opinion that something was amiss with the mare he eased NOT LEGAL out of the event. A post-race veterinary examination of NOT LEGAL did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer D. Johnston advised that it was his intention to retire the mare.

Race 4: CHAPTECH OPEN HANDICAP 1250M
1ST – TAORMINA 2ND – RED STORY 3RD – ELASTANE 4TH – PARIS BOY

RED STORY (C. Whiteley) was slow to begin.

Near the 1100 metres SUPER SHADOW (App. C. Pye) raced in restricted room between SEA DYNASTY (T. Bannon) and ELASTANE (N. Patchett), which shifted in. Jockey N. Patchett was reprimanded.

Jockey A. Coome pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that near the 1000 metres he permitted TAORMINA to shift in when insufficiently clear of SUPER SHADOW (App. C. Pye), resulting in SUPER SHADOW being taken in across the running of SEA DYNASTY (T. Bannon), resulting in SEA DYNASTY being checked and losing its rightful running. Jockey Coome was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on 23rd August 2011, up to and including midnight on 26th August 2011. In assessing penalty stewards took into account Jockey Coome’s plea of guilty and his excellent riding record.

In the early and middle stages SUPER SHADOW (App. C. Pye) over-raced.

Near the 300 metres Jockey C. Whiteley (RED STORY) accidentally dropped his whip.

JAZZOOM (S. Watkin) raced wide throughout.

When questioned as to the tactics adopted aboard RED STORY, Jockey C. Whiteley stated that he had noted that RED STORY had a tendency to be slow to begin at previous starts and again today began slowly and as such lost ground as the start was affected. Jockey Whiteley added that leaving the 900 metres RED STORY began to over-race as a consequence of the interference suffered by SUPER SHADOW (App. C. Pye) and SEA DYNASTY (T. Bannon) and continued to over-race until near the 600 metres where he allowed the gelding to shift out to a 4 wide position. Jockey Whiteley noted that at this point of the race he placed RED STORY under pressure to which the gelding responded and improved its position leading up to and rounding the home turn where he was positioned to the outside of TAORMINA (A. Coome). Jockey Whiteley further noted that upon straightening he began to utilise his whip in an attempt to encourage RED STORY however, when changing from a backhand to a forehand grip he accidently dropped his whip near the 300m. As a consequence Jockey Whiteley then utilised the reins in a slapping motion down the gelding’s neck to further encourage it and continued to ride the gelding vigorously over the concluding stages. Trainer L. Rowe, who was not in attendance at today’s meeting will be interviewed at a later date.

Race 5: DAILY MERCURY CLASS 3 HANDICAP RY T1250M

In the middle stages ENCOSTA SEQUALO (C. Whiteley) over-raced and near the 700 metres was placed in restricted room to the inside of HUSSANA (T. Bannon), which was taken in slightly by MONALEAH (App. A. Taylor). Apprentice Taylor was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

Near the 200 metres A TOUCH OF FROST (D. Missen) was disappointed for a narrow run between RED AURUM (D. Simmons) and DELAGO RAIDER (A. Coome), which shifted in slightly. Jockey A. Coome was advised to exercise more care.

MONALEAH (App. A. Taylor) and ZIGGY ZARIZ (N. Patchett) raced wide throughout.

Race 6: MACKAY TURF CLUB CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1500M
1ST – CHINRUB 2ND – POWER TO EXCEED 3RD – MISTABLISTA 4TH - IGOTITFROMMYMUMMA

Shortly after the start MISTABLISTA (A. Pattillo) had to be steadied when tightened for room between CHABAL (D. Simmons) and SPEEDSKATER (C. Whiteley) which was inclined to lay in and away from BLUE BOM SQUARE (M. Usher).

BLUE BOM SQUARE (M. Usher) and FLEUR DE BAIE (N. Patchett) raced wide throughout.

Approaching the 200 metres CHINRUB (D. Missen) was inclined to lay in across the heels of JUST HAVE A GO (A. Coome).

When questioned as to the disappointing performance of FLEUR DE BAIE Jockey N. Patchett stated that he was instructed to settle the horse in a rearward position, however after beginning well he was obliged to race three wide for the majority of the event. Jockey Patchett added that when placed under pressure to improve near the 800 metres, the mare failed to respond to his riding and did not finish the race off as expected. The comments were noted.

Approaching the 200 metres CHINRUB (D. Missen) was inclined to lay in across the heels of JUST HAVE A GO (A. Coome).

Near the 50 metres IGOTITFROMMYMUMMA (App. C. Pye) and MISTABLISTA (A. Pattillo) bumped.
