Approaching the 200m STAR SPRAY (D Simmons) had to be eased to avoid the heels of RENOUNCE which shifted out. A Coome was advised to exercise more care.

Stewards sought an explanation from A Coome regarding the seemingly poor performance of JOHN’S SPECIAL. A Coome stated that the gelding travelled well in the middle stages, but did not respond to his riding when pressured. Trainer S Kendrick was at a loss to explain the performance and would now carry out blood tests on the gelding and report the findings. A post race veterinary examination of JOHN’S SPECIAL revealed no abnormalities.
