Race 1: The Event Centre Class 5 Handicap - 1100 metres
1st SECURITY SAM 2nd CLICK UP 3rd MARMILLION 4th - PERFECT HUSSEY
On jumping, CLICK UP (A. Coome) bounded in the air, began awkwardly and lost some ground.
In the early stages CLICK UP raced fiercely.
Race 2: Caneland Central QTIS 2YO Handicap - 1100 metres
1st CRAIGLEA KALBAR 2nd CRAIGLEA TORQUE 3rd CRAIGLEA OPAL
Owner Mr S. Johnton informed stewards by telephone that he had been delayed in transporting CRAIGLEA KALBAR, CRAIGLEA OPAL and CRAIGLEA TORQUE to the course. Stewards accepted his explanation for his late arrival on track.
There were no racing incidents.
Race 3: Hot FM Class 3 Plate - 1560 metres
1st – CRACK A SMILE 2nd MUKTASHEF 3rd ROCKET A GOGO 4th - SIR VAN TEES
SIR VAN TEES (App. A. Kitson) began awkwardly and then over-raced in the early stages.
At the start TOP CLASS (C. Whiteley) shifted in and made contact with the hindquarters of MUKTASHEF (T. Bannon).
In the early stages TOP CLASS (C. Whiteley) raced three wide.
Race 4: Daily Mercury Maiden Handicap - 1300 metres
1st MARDARE 2nd DR MURGUN 3rd DUAN THEO
Approaching the 250 metres DUAN THEO (D. Hayse) brushed the running rail.
Jockey S. Sheargold was cautioned for using his whip on MARDARE after passing the winning post
Race 5: Carlton United Breweries Class 1 Handicap - 1300 metres
1st WESTERN YORK 2nd KARZING 3rd CRAIGLEA CARINA 4th - BRASHERE
Prior to the start stewards sought an explanation from trainer S. Kendrick for the poor performance of BRASHERE at its most recent start, at Mackay on 12th January. Mr Kendrick advised that the mare had pulled up well following the event and had not shown any sign of abnormalities. Mr Kendrick was of the opinion that the three runs within a short period may have affected the performance of BRASHERE and he had elected to start her today before giving consideration to spelling the mare. Following the event Mr Kendrick confirmed that BRASHERE will be spelled immediately.
KARZING (T. O’Hara) was slow to begin.
At the start VIVA FORTE (L. Dillon) shifted inwards.
In the early and middle stages BRASHERE (A. Coome) over-raced.
Near the 1000 metres the saddle on SWEET SONG (J. Babarovich) shifted forward, placing its rider at a disadvantage for the remainder of the event.
Race 6: Channel Seven Maiden Plate - 1100 metres
1st HIP SHAKE BANG 2nd GOTTAGET 3rd CRYSTALS’N’PEARLS 4th - MAYOR OF CLONMEL
GEE I MAY (App. C. Pye) began awkwardly, made contact with IRIANA WIL (C. McIver) and lost ground.
In the early and middle stages IRIANA WIL (C. McIver) raced wide.
From the 700 metres until the home turn HIP SHAKE BANG (App. D. McWhinney) laid out.
CRYSTALS’N’PEARLS (D. Hayse) raced wide throughout.
Race 7: Samuel Smith & Son 3YO Handicap - 1100 metres
1st PYGMY HUNTER 2nd CRAIGLEA TEQUILA 3rd HIDDEN PRAYER 4th - CRAIGLEA MODEL
HAYYLER’S DRAGON (L. Dillon) and CORE HAYYLER (D. Hayse) were a little slow to begin.
From near the 800 metres HIDDEN PRAYER (T. O’Hara) raced wide.
From rounding the home turn PYGMY HUNTER (App. D. McWhinney) hung out.
Race 8: NE Food Class 4 Handicap - 1200 metres
1st ASSIMILATOR 2nd POWER TO EXCEED 3rd NAN BELL 4th - FASTER BUSTER
ULTRAZONAL (D. Hayse) raced wide until leaving the 800 metres and was restrained to take up a position close to the running rail.
From the 600 metres until rounding the home turn HARVZEE (T. Bannon) laid out.
Jockey D. Missen, the rider of ASSIMILATOR, was cautioned under A.R. 137A in regard to the use of his whip above height and after passing the winning post.
Race 9: Bacardi Lion Open Handicap - 1100 metres
1st KILWINNING OPTION 2nd WRITER 3rd CANNYCLIMB 4th - SUTTON BRAVE
At the start KILWINNING OPTION (App. K. Matheson) shifted in onto SPEEDSKATER (App. D. McWhinney).
Leaving the 600 metres CANNYCLIMB (A. Coome) rolled in and placed CRAIGLEA TINA (T. Bannon) in restricted room. SPEEDSKATER (App. D. McWhinney), which was following, was awkwardly placed on the heels of CRAIGLEA TINA (T. Bannon) until near the 400 metres.
A post-race veterinary examination of IL CARDINALE (C. Whiteley) revealed that the gelding was making a respiratory noise consistent with roaring.
