PREPARED [K Stone] which was kicked by another horse behind the barriers was inspected by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to take its place in the event.
SHE KEEPS ME BUSY [S Kaya] began awkwardly.
Upon returning to scale Jockey Jason Stopps, rider of NORTHERN THEATRE, which was placed third, lodged a protest against the first placed SHE KEEPS ME BUSY [S Kaya] alleging interference near the 500m and again near the 350m. After viewing the film and taking evidence from both parties, stewards conceded that NORTHERN THEATRE did have to be eased when tightened for room by SHE KEEPS ME BUSY which shifted in near the 500m. However, they could not be satisfied that the interference suffered by NORTHERN THEATRE warranted a reversal of the placings and therefore dismissed the protest and declared correct weight on the numbers semaphored by the judge. At a later inquiry Jockey Kaya was reprimanded under the provisions of AR 137(a) for allowing SHE KEEPS ME BUSY to shift in when not sufficiently clear of NORTHERN APACHE.
Race 2: Graham Hotel Bracelet Class 2 Handicap 1210m
1st - Nothin’ Better 2nd – Hidden Run 3rd - Monsoon Mist 4th - Tibooburra Emma
HEATWAVES was declared a late scratching at 12:10pm due to no rider being available.
TIBOOBURRA EMMA [M Atkinson] and URBAN LOVE [J Murphy] raced wide for the entire event.
Stewards questioned Jockey M Cullen as to the reason for ALITTLEBITOFBUBBLY losing ground at the start. Jockey Cullen stated that at the start ALITTLEBITOFBUBBLY turned its head on the side, and then began to throw its head in the air. Jockey Cullen added that ALITTLEBITOFBUBBLY resented having to race towards the rear of the field and as such he had advised connections to remove the blinkers and cross over noseband from the mare’s racing gear in the hope it would settle and race more tractably. The explanations were noted.
Race 3: Apollo Fruit Class B Handicap 906m
1st - Lago Lies 2nd – Desertsunprincess 3rd - Dane Will Do 4th - Six Bob
EROS COCONUT [W D’Avila] and DIAMOND SEEKER [M Atkinson] raced wide throughout.
Approaching the 800m mark, FOURSREAL [R Ryan] shifted out abruptly onto the hindquarters of SIX BOB [J Murphy] which as a result shifted out and bumped DIAMOND SEEKER [M Atkinson] which had to be steadied and lost considerable ground. DIAMOND SEEKER was obliged to race extremely wide for the remainder of the race. Jockey Ryan reported the FOURSREAL began to race fiercely rounding the first turn and as a consequence hung out for the remainder of the race preventing him from riding the mare out. Jockey Ryan stated that the racing manners of FOURSREAL were the catalyst for the interference suffered by DIAMOND SEEKER despite his efforts. Trainer J Williams advised stewards that FOURSREAL had lacerations to the near fore leg and as a result was lame in the near fore leg. Mr Williams was advised that a veterinary clearance must produced before the FOURSREAL would be permitted to race again.
Race 4: Samsons Fruit & Veg Open Handicap 1010m
1st – Heresay 2nd – Alternate 3rd - Fred The Legion 4th - Force And Effect
Shortly after the start, FRED THE LEGION [S Kaya] was eased when tightened for room between ALTERNATE [K Rockett] and HERESAY [J Stopps] both of which shifted ground.
FRED THE LEGION [S Kaya] raced wide in the middle stages.
A post race veterinary examination of HERESAY [J Stopps] which returned to the enclosure with blood in its mouth failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 5: Tableland Fertilizers CRT Mareeba Cup Class 6 Plate 1500m
1st - Baramul Bullet 2nd - My Name Is Earl 3rd - Lady Lesia 4th - Grand Silence
STARTUS was declared a late scratching at 12:25pm due to no rider available.
GRAND SILENCE [S Kaya] was slow to begin.
CHAUFUHR [R Ryan] raced ungenerously when being restrained near the 1100m mark and continued to do so for the majority of the race.
PONBAR AVENUE [K Rockett] raced wide throughout.
An inquiry into the reason for Jockey J. Stopps being dual engaged on STARTUS and DISCARDED BULLET was adjourned to a time and date to be fixed so that further evidence from A. Bailey the trainer of STARTUS could be obtained.
ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
