MOUNT ISA RACE CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SATURDAY 23/08/03

STEWARDS PANEL: CJ Waters (CHAIRMAN), TO Anderson (Deputy)

WEATHER – FINE & WINDY TRACK – FAST RAIL – TRUE

GENERAL: Due to a clerical error, Apprentice Tim Brummell was incorrectly shown in the Race book as a 2kg claiming apprentice as opposed to the Queensland Racing Horses Database listing of the Apprentice’s claim as that of 3kg. Upon perusal of the Apprentice’s Winning Rides Book, Stewards were able to confirm that his claiming entitlement was that of 3kg as per the Queensland Racing Horses Database. An announcement to the general public was made to this effect prior to the meeting.
Scratchings: Race 2- PHANTOM GUEST; Race 6- LUBERTUS

RACE 1: QUEENSLANDER
CLASS B HANDICAP – 1000 METRES (6 Starters)

Mark Cummings replaced Scott Thurlow as the rider for WHY WONDER when an airline dispute in Brisbane caused Jockey Thurlow to arrive late on course. BEDOURIE’S QUEEN (A. Spradau) was a fraction slow into stride when a start was effected. MISTER WAFFIE (T. Hill) got its head up and over-raced at the 650 metre mark resulting in the horse losing some ground at that point.

RACE 2: INLANDER
CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1000 METRES (8 Starters)

INTEGRA ROYAL (Apprentice T. Brummell) was very fractious in the barrier and reared high on a number of occasions prior to the start. AZTEC COPPER (NZ) (S. Thurlow) lost ground at the start when the horse was a fraction slow into stride. Approaching the 750 metre mark SCOTTISH CHARGER (K. Ballard) became unbalanced and shifted outwards slightly resulting in the forward movement of FLASH TOUCH (A. Spradau) being hampered at that point.

RACE 3: QBBS QUALITY HANDICAP – 1000 metres (7 Starters)

It was noted by Stewards that the race winner AGES AGO (Apprentice S. Kavanagh) raced wide on the track for almost the entire event.

RACE 4: QUEENSLAND RAIL
WEIGHT FOR AGE – 1450 METRES (10 Starters)

RACE CAREER (Ms D. Slack-Smith) lost ground at the start when the horse was a fraction slow into stride. Stewards admonished Jockey Rhonda Seymour the rider of LUBERTUS for allowing her mount to shift in at the 1250 metre mark resulting in OUT OF THIS PLANET (Apprentice S. Kavanagh) having to ease.

RACE 5: TILT TRAIN QTIS
CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES (10 Starters)

No reportable racing incidents in running. Both the race winner ACADEMY OF ARTS and the third place getter FAULTY FUSE qualified for the QTIS bonus.

RACE 6: TAVEL TRAIN FOSSIL TRAIL RACE FINAL
CLASS 6 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES ( 10 Starters )

This event was run in drizzling rain. Approaching the 500 metre mark JUDITZ (Apprentice T. Brummell) hung outwards slightly and bumped NED’S GAME (K. Ballard) forcing that horse wider on the track at that point. Stewards questioned Jockey J. Haitana the rider of NIP OF SPIRIT in relation to that gelding’s very poor performance in today’s event compared to its overall recent form. Jockey Haitana stated that the horse had traveled well to the 800 metre mark but then appeared to resent racing to the inside of other horses and had to be hard ridden shortly after that point in order to hold his position in the field. Stewards noted the comments by Jockey J. Haitana for future reference.

GENERAL: 3 bookmakers fielded at the meeting: JD Comerford; GN Saunders, S. Troxell.

ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED AND SAMPLES FORWARDED TO THE RACING SCIENCE CENTRE FOR ANALYSIS.
