General:

Upon arrival on course, Stewards noticed that a considerable number of campers had been given permission by the complex management to take up temporary residence on infield of the Buchanan Park Race Track. This resulted in stock horses being tethered and vehicles being parked in close proximity to the running rail combined with pedestrian traffic traversing the course proper at both the 200m mark and the home turn. Stewards, accompanied by all riders and starter Tom Atkinson conducted a thorough inspection of the course proper and surrounds prior to the running of the first event.

Due to errors in the race book, Jockey J. Sheehan was inadvertently omitted as the rider for OSCARLENO in race 1; CEDE NULLIS in race 2; MY FYVEIGHT in race 3; SIR CONISTON in race 5 and PROSPECTORS JEST in race 6.

Race 1: Castlemaine XXXX – Class A Handicap. Distance – 1000 Metres - (7 Starters).

1st – ARDEKUHNI 2nd – JUNGLELAND 3rd – OSCARLENO 4th – ROCKIN THE CROWN

When a start was effected, DESERT DANGER (Apprentice Ms N. Summers) jumped inwards and made heavy contact DAWNS DANCER (T. Brummell), resulting in DAWNS DANCER (T. Brummell) being buffeted between OSCARLENO (J. Sheehan) and DESERT DANGER (Apprentice Ms N. Summers) for a considerable distance. ARDEKUHNI (A. Spradau) was slow away. No other reportable racing incidence in running. Following the running of this event, Deputy Tony Anderson advised that a gate to the complex at the 600 metre mark had been left open resulting in vehicles being driven up against the outside running rail at this point. This situation was immediately reported to the complex Manager for her immediate attention.

Race 2: Diageo Australia – Class 5 Handicap. Distance – 1000 Metres - (7 Starters).

1st – MILORA MAJOR 2nd – SPECIAL CELESTE 3rd – RAINBOW DANCER 4th – HI CATARUN

MR KASHMAN was scratched after final acceptances. Whilst being saddled, GRIFFIN GATE appeared to be sore in the off-side hind region, the horse was subsequently declared unfit to start after examination by the club veterinary surgeon (RSC veterinary incident report 2088 refers), the gelding was therefore declared a late scratching by order of the stewards at 02:20pm, acting on veterinary advice. Prior to the announcement of correct weight stewards ordered all monies wagered on GRIFFIN GATE to be refunded in full and all successful bets made prior to the withdrawal of GRIFFIN GATE be subject to deductions of 49 cents the win and 25 cents the place. Whilst parading in the saddling enclosure, RAINBOW DANCER (Apprentice Ms N. Summers) became extremely fractious resulting in the mare rearing over backwards, dislodging apprentice Ms N Summers and making heavy contact with the legs of trainer Mr George Tipping. Both Apprentice Ms N. Summers and Trainer Mr. Tipping both received attention from the attending Paramedics and both were conveyed to hospital for further observation. RAINBOW DANCER was subject to a veterinary inspection and passed fit to start. As there was a considerable delay in the starting time of this event (approximately 45 minutes), Stewards permitted a late riding change with Jockey A. Spradau being semaphored as the rider for RAINBOW DANCER. CEDE NULLIS (J. Sheehan) was extremely fractious in the barriers prior to the start. No reportable racing incidents in running.

Race 3: Xstrata – QTIS Class 3 Plate. Distance – 1200 Metres - (6 Starters).

1st – ANTICIPATION 2nd – MY FYVEIGHT 3rd – GUILT TRIP (NZ) 4th – FOREST WHISPERS

D. Ballard replaced Apprentice Ms N. Summers as the rider for THE COOLER. MY FYVEIGHT (J. Sheehan) jumped awkwardly. THE COOLER (D. Ballard) raced wide on the track in the back straight.

Race 4: O’Donnell Griffin (ODG) Electrical – Class B Handicap. Distance – 1450 Metres – (4 Starters).

1st - FURS AFLYIN 2nd - CONNAISSANCE 3rd - TURN THE DIAL 4th - VITA NOVA

PEPPERTREE DANCER was a late scratching at 02.45pm on veterinary advice, due to the horse injuring its head in the tie up stalls (RSC veterinary incident report 2090 refers). No alteration to betting was required. No reportable racing incidents in running.

Race 5: Huddys Social Club – Weight For Age. Distance – 1450 Metres – (8 Starters).

1ST – REGULUS (NZ) 2nd - HEART OF LIGHT 3rd - PAYAKARUN 4th - BYWORD

Apprentice J. Rudd replaced Apprentice Ms N. Summers as the rider for HEART OF LIGHT. The forward movement of both PAYAKARUN (D. Ballard) and CHOIMAR (K. Ballard) were hampered slightly at the 1250 metre, when SIR CONISTON (J. Sheehan) shifted inwards momentarily at that point. HILL BILLY HEAVEN (T. Brummell) pulled hard and over raced in the early and middle stages of the event. Leaving the 500 metre mark, BYWORD (A. Spradau) was hampered for a short distance, when REGULUS (NZ) (Apprentice C. Gilby) shifted outwards in endeavour to improve its racing position.

Race 6: Overlander Hotel – Mailman Missile – Open Handicap. Distance – 0900 Metres - (5 Starters).

1st – MONTORO 2nd – PICNIC POINT 3rd – GRAND FILANTE (NZ) 4th – MURDSA

PROSPECTORS JEST was a late at 02:30pm on veterinary advice, due to being sore in the off side front (RSC veterinary incident report 2089 refers). No alteration to betting was required. D. Ballard replaced Apprentice Ms N. Summers as the rider for MURDSA. CHYNA SUCCESS (K. Ballard) was fractious en-route to the starting point. The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Jockey A. Spradau (the rider of the second placegetter PICNIC POINT) wished to view the stewards patrol film footage of the final 200 metres of the event. After viewing the film, no objection was forthcoming and correct weight was subsequently semaphored on the judge’s final placing’s. Apprentice C. Gilby (the rider of MONTORO) was advised by stewards, that they would expect him to endeavour to keep his mounts on a straight course in future.
