STROM BLEU (L. Dillon) proved difficult to load. Trainer P. Inwood was advised that a warning has been placed on the barrier manners of the gelding.
SUNTRICE (C. Gilby) knuckled on jumping and lost some ground.
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of GLOBAL, Jockey D. Ballard stated that the gelding failed to muster early speed and when placed under pressure near the 600 metres resented racing in the kick-back. Jockey Ballard said that he had advised connections that the gelding would be better suited in races over a longer distance than today’s event. Trainer D. Finter agreed with the comments of Jockey Ballard and informed stewards that he intended to continue with the horse’s preparation and would step GLOBAL up in distance at its next race start. A post-race veterinary examination of GLOBAL revealed that GLOBAL had a small spot on the cornea of its off eye and another mark on the cornea of the near eye, possibly caused by sand irritation.
Race 2: Industrea Mining Technology QTIS Maiden Plate – 1100 metres:
1st – Jabiru Dreaming 2nd – Carnation Reef 3rd – Nothinleicacrownie 4th – Shorty’s Choice
CARNATION REEF (K. Ballard) was slow to muster speed.
Shortly after the start OPTIONAL ROCKET (D. Ballard) was tightened for room between RAVISSANTE FILLE (lT. Hill), which shifted out, and SHORTY’S CHOICE (M. Cummings), which shifted in, resulting in OPTIONAL ROCKET having to be eased.
When questioned as to the seemingly disappointing performance of SHORTY’S CHOICE, Jockey Cummings said that the gelding began awkwardly and when placed under pressure at the 600 metres responded to his riding however, in his opinion finished off the race only fairly. Trainer J. Wright agreed with the comments of Jockey Cummings but was unable to offer any explanation for the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination of SHORTY’S CHOICE did not reveal any abnormalities. Mr Wright undertook to advise stewards if anything was amiss with the gelding in the days following the race.
Race 3: Les Huddy Memorial Bracelet Weight For Age – 1100 metres:
1st – Outstandingly 2nd – Headlight 3rd – Crystal Tiger 4th – Aussie Rocke
CRYSTAL TIGER (D. Ballard) knuckled on jumping, almost dislodging Jockey D. Ballard, and lost ground.
RICHART (J. Rodd) began awkwardly.
PERIANDER (N. Evans) shifted out shortly after the start and made contact with OUTSTANDINGLY (L. Dillon).
In the early and middle stages OUTSTANDINGLY (L. Dillon) raced wide.
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of ANCONI, Jockey R. Sue-San stated that rounding the turn near the 800 metres the gelding hung out and made contact with GRAND MARK (T. Hill), which was taken out onto MAJESTIC LION (T. Brummell). Jockey Sue-San said that he placed the gelding under pressure near the 400 metres, however it failed to respond to his riding and in his opinion resented racing inside other runners. Jockey Sue-San commented that this was the first occasion on which he had ridden ANCONI, and added that he was disappointed in the performance of the gelding. Trainer S. Royes said that he was disappointed with the performance of ANCONI and he agreed with the comments of Jockey Sue-San. A post-race veterinary examination of ANCONI did not reveal any abnormalities. Mr Royes said that he intended to continue with the preparation of ANCONI. The explanation was noted.
A post-race veterinary examination of RICHART (J. Rudd), which finished tailed off, revealed that the gelding was displaying mild distress.

After being placed in the barriers SARABAH ROSE (C. Gilby) became fractious, kicked out and became cast. The mare was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and acting on her advice that SARABAH ROSE was unfit to race, stewards ordered the withdrawal of the mare at 4.40 p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on SARABAH ROSE be refunded in full and that all bets made with bookmakers prior to the withdrawal of SARABAH ROSE be paid less the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of successful tickets: win 19¢, place 16¢. Trainer G. Tipping was advised that a warning has been placed on the barrier manners of SARABAH ROSE and that he must furnish a veterinary clearance prior to the mare being permitted to race again. KID SUNDAE (M. Cummings) stood flat-footed at the start and was slow to begin.
RAPID LEICA JACKO (K. Ballard) knuckled at the start, lost ground and then raced wide throughout.
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of MONEGASQUE, Jockey D. Ballard stated that the gelding began well, took up a position midfield and travelled comfortably in the early and middle stages. Jockey Ballard said that when he placed the gelding under pressure at the 600 metres it responded only fairly to his riding and in his opinion was disappointing. Trainer D. Finter agreed with the comments of Jockey Ballard and added that the gelding will be sent for an immediate spell. The explanations were noted.
Race 5: Industrea Mining Services Spring Cup Open Hadicap – 1450 metres
1st – Sandwood 2nd – Repeat Offender 3rd – Castellani 4th – Commanche Warrior
When questioned as to the performance of JUST A TOUCH, Jockey R. Sue-San stated the gelding was slow to muster early speed, consequently raced wide in the middle stages until near the 700 metres where he took up a position close to the running rail. Jockey Sue-San said that when placed under pressure near the 600 metres JUST A TOUCH responded only fairly to his riding and was disappointing. Jockey Sue-San added that in his opinion JUST A TOUCH resented the kick-back during the event and also was unsuited by the shorter distance of today’s race. Trainer J. Morris agreed with the comments of Jockey Sue-San and undertook to inform stewards as to whether anything was amiss with JUST A TOUCH in the days following the event. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any significant abnormalities. The comments were noted.
