Race 1: Thorp's Jewellers Kingaroy Maiden Plate 800m
1st – Wenting 2nd- Here’s Lucy 3rd- Team Coffey 4th- Spedella
CATTAI CREEK (T. Ticknell) kicked the back gates prior to breaking through the front of the barriers, and was quickly restrained by it's rider. A subsequent veterinary examination cleared the filly to start.
TIERRO (R. Johnston-Bell) jumped in the air at the start and lost ground.
SANA GIRL (C. Jokic) was slow to begin.
TEAM COFFEY (L. Appo) shifted out shortly after the start and made heavy contact with YOULGETEM (D. Robinson).
Near the 700m, ALIVE IN PARIS (A. Merritt) had to be steadied when tightened for room by MISS MOOKYCHICK (D. McWhinney), which was taken in by HERE'S LUCY (S. Bayliss). S. Bayliss was advised to exercise greater care when shifting ground in the future.
Approaching the home turn, TIERRO improved onto the heels of TEAM COFFEY, and when being steadied by it's rider, shifted out, forcing MISS MOOKYCHICK, SPEDELLA (C. Eaton) and ALIVE IN PARIS wider on the track.
C. Eaton reported that SPEDELLA was inclined to hang out throughout the event.
Race 2: McDonalds Kingaroy QTIS Class 1 Handicap 1000m
1st – Commands The Truth 2nd- Last Roar 3rd- Flag ‘N’ Fury 4th- Benji’s World
FLAG 'N' FURY (I. Coombes) shifted in at the start and made contact with UKOK LASS (T. Ticknell). A short distance later, both FLAG 'N' FURY and UKOK LASS were tightened by JET LARGO (L. Appo) which shifted in.
C. Eaton reported that BENJI'S WORLD was inclined to hang in throughout the event.
L. Appo was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts out to the finish line.
Stewards questioned Apprentice T. Ticknell over her riding of UKOK LASS, in particular between the 600m and 400m where UKOK LASS lost it's position trailing the leader, whilst under a tight hold from T. Ticknell. She stated her instructions were to be in a forward position, and to attempt to keep other runners from crossing her. She added that the mare was travelling well under a tight hold, and due to this did not attempt to give the mare more rein at this stage of the race. She added, that in hindsight she may have erred at this stage of the race, as this allowed two other runners to improve to her outside, and resulted in UKOK LASS losing it's position just behind the leader. Trainer J. Short confirmed the instructions, and agreed with T. Ticknell's assessment in that she may have erred at this stage of the race in not allowing UKOK LASS more rein to maintain it's position. Stewards advised T. Ticknell, that in their opinion, her ride lacked judgement in that she failed to allow UKOK LASS more rein to maintain its position trailing the leader, however given her relative inexperience, did not believe she was culpable under the rules or racing, and took no further action.
Race 3: Star Tyre Maiden Handicap 1200m
1st – Rockin’ Roz 2nd- Step Up Lady 3rd- Firebird 4th- Kutcher
FIREBIRD (R. Johnston-Bell) shifted out at the start and made contact with DEKARNAGE (J. Letherby).
GIRTON (I. Coombes) was slow to begin.
DALRYMPLE PRINCE (M. Abe) and DON'T GET CRANKY (C. Kearney) race wide the majority of the event.
Race 4: Bill Hull Car Centre Class 3 Plate 1200m
1st – Little Mrs Murphy 2nd- Gold Record 3rd- Marc the Magpie 4th- Royal Rocket
Approaching the home turn NAVAL ACTION (R. Johnston-Bell) became unbalance when it shifted out and away from CAMARA LAD (M. Abe), when that runner shifted out and improved to it's inside to obtain clear running.
NAVAL ACTION raced wide the majority of the event.
Stewards sought an explanation from J. Letherby regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of LIKE A GEE SIX. He stated that the mare travelled well until placed under pressure at the 600m, where the mare failed to respond to his riding, and in his opinion proved disappointing. He was unable to offer any tangible explanation for the performance, other than the mare may not have appreciated today's firm track conditions. Trainer B. Currie stated he expected a forward showing from LIKE A GEE SIX after the mare had pleased him in a recent trial, and confirmed his disappointment in the performance today. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any significant abnormalities. Mr Currie undertook to report to stewards any condition that may arise in the coming days that may have affected today's performance.
Race 5: Maidenwell Hotel Class B Handicap 1600m
1st – Lady Oscar 2nd- Wild Rumours 3rd- Roadworthy 4th- Flippin Marvellous
FLIPPIN MARVELLOUS (D. McWhinney) which was fractions in the barriers, lost contact with the main body of the field in the early stages of the event despite the efforts of it's rider. D. McWhinney explained that this is the customary racing pattern of the mare, which was able to improve into the race from a point leaving the 800m.
