Race 1: Class 3 Plate - 1600 metres
1st: RAIN KING 2nd: FLEET STREET 3rd: JUMPIN ‘ JARED 4th: FOB POCKET
FOB POCKET was slow to begin.
BROWNSVILLE GIRL jumped awkwardly.
RAIN KING lay out in the straight, proving difficult to ride out.
An objection was lodged by the rider of 3rd placed JUMPIN’ JARED (S Quick) against RAIN KING (R McMahon) being declared the winner on the grounds of alleged interference shortly after the start. After taking all evidence from all connections and from the stewards’ own observations, the objection was dismissed, and placings confirmed. In dismissing the objection, the stewards were of the opinion that the degree of interference suffered by JUMPIN’ JARED did not exceed the beaten margin. At a subsequent enquiry apprentice R McMahon was reprimanded for steadying the pace on RAIN KING approaching the 1200 metres, resulting in JUMPIN’ JARED, which had begun to over-race, becoming awkwardly placed on the heels of RAIN KING for a short distance. After this incident, it was noticeable that JUMPIN’ JARED continued to over-race for some distance.
Stewards instructed that SET FOR STARDOM be sent for a routine specimen, and that it undertake a post-race veterinary examination.
Stewards questioned jockey D Evans over the performance of SET FOR STARDOM, and he stated that he was instructed to settle handy, if not to be on the pace. However, due to the slow pace during the early stages, he elected SET FOR STARDOM, which was beginning to over-race, to stride forward. He said from the 400 metres SET FOR STARDOM was placed under pressure, but then began to hang out, resulting in him having difficulty in keeping the horse straight over the final stages.
When questioned, trainer T Bourke could offer little excuse for SET FOR STARDOM hanging in the straight, and a subsequent veterinary examination, revealed that SET FOR STARDOM had lacerations to the inside of the mouth. Trainer Bourke was instructed that SET FOR STARDOM, before racing again, would need a veterinary certificate of soundness, and would have to trial to the satisfaction of stewards, before starting again. Stewards also ordered that a post-race sample be taken from SET FOR STARDOM.

Race 2: Open Handicap - 1400 metres
1st: REGAL ASCOT 2nd: BOOBOO 3rd: MCLAREN VALE 4th: CRAIGLEA EGO

MCLAREN VALE and BRANCH OF GOLD were slow to begin.
CONSPIRACY was also slow to begin.
Approaching the 1100 metres, BOOBOO began to over-race and became awkwardly placed on the heels of REGAL ASCOT, and when steadied, shifted out, and hampered BRANCH OF GOLD. From this point BRANCH OF GOLD began to over-race for some distance.
Passing the 1000 metres, CONSPIRACY became awkward on the heels of BOOBOO and was steadied.

Race 3: QRSE Class 1 Handicap – 1400 metres

Whilst proceeding to the barriers, REDKAN LASS dislodged jockey D Evans, who suffered a harmless fall. REDKAN LASS then escaped and was recaptured near the 1300 metres. After undergoing a pre-race veterinary examination, REDKAN LASS was cleared to start.
DETONATES and BLUE RACER were slow to begin.
Nearing the 1000 metres, FULL PORT became awkward on the heels of RIP’N’BEAUTY, rolled in, and momentarily crowded GARRINCHA, which was steadied.

REDKAN LASS had a tendency to lay in, in the straight.
Apprentice B Hull became ill and was subsequently stood down from riding for the remainder of the day by the Club’s medical officer, and was subsequently replaced on THE ROAN RANGER by L Fyfe.
Apprentice B Hull was directed to obtain a medical clearance prior to riding again.

Race 4: QTIS 3YO Maiden Handicap - 1000 metres
1st: MISS SANTANA 2nd: GENERAL ARTHUR 3rd: LITTLE MS GORGEOUS 4th: FINLANDER
LITTLE MS GORGEOUS jumped awkwardly and lost ground.
LADIES EDITION was slow to begin.
MISS SANTANA jumped inwards when released, and bumped MADAM KANOOT, who in turn, shifted in and hampered GAZE COUNTY, resulting in all three runners becoming unbalanced.
Approaching the 650 metres, LITTLE MS GORGEOUS, which was racing ungenerously, shifted out abruptly, bumping MADAM KANOOT out on to MISS SANTANA.
Nearing the 500 metres, ALCHRISONTEE became awkward, rolled in and brushed the running rail, shifted out and bumped MADAM KANOOT onto MISS SANTANA, resulting in MADAM KANOOT becoming unbalanced for a short distance. As a result of this, LITTLE MS GORGEOUS, which was following ALCHRISONTEE, became awkward, made contact with the running rail, and almost fell. At a subsequent enquiry, stewards instructed stable representative T Hess, that a warning is being placed on the racing manners of LITTLE MS GORGEOUS.
Stewards questioned jockey D Evans over the performance of GENERAL ARTHUR, and he stated that he was instructed to go forward today over the 1000 metres, and followed the instructions. However, he feels that the horse is better suited if ridden off the pace and allowed to settle.

Race 5: QRSE Class 4 Handicap - 1000 metres
1st: DYNAMIC WAVE 2nd: CINDY KATE 3rd: BABE OF THE YEAR 4th: KAI CIBO
ALLADIN’S LAMP was slow to begin.
KAI CIBO jumped awkwardly, and then over-raced during the early stages.
SHAKESPEARIAN jumped awkwardly, shifted out, became unbalanced and lost ground.
DOTSWOOD hung out between the 500 and 400 metres, taking DYNAMIC WAVE wider on the track. Stewards questioned apprentice L Fyfe regarding DOTSWOOD hanging, and he stated that the “D” bit had pulled through its mouth, making it difficult for him to steer. Then he stated over the concluding stages, whilst under pressure, it had a tendency to lay in, and lost ground quickly. At a subsequent enquiry, trainer D Shultz was instructed that a warning was being placed on the racing manners of DOTSWOOD.
KAI CIBO was held up approaching the 300 metres, and shifted out across the heels of DOTSWOOD to obtain clear running.
CINDY KATE lost its near fore plate.

Race 6: Maiden Handicap - 1200 metres
1st: MAN OF ILLUSION 2nd: BUYING TIME 3rd: WILL IT REIGN 4th: SPECTACULAR FRISCO
Whilst proceeding to the barrier, SYDNEY JACK took charge of the rider. A pre-race veterinary examination of SYDNEY JACK revealed no abnormalities, and the gelding was permitted to take its place in the field.
WILL IT REIGN and LITTLE GUS were slow to begin.
Approaching the 850 metres, BUYING TIME (NZ) was steadied from the heels of MAN OF ILLLUSION whilst over-racing. Nearing the 450 metres, BUYING TIME (NZ) shifted out, and momentarily hampered SYDNEY JACK.
LITTLE GUS raced unkindly throughout, finishing a distant last. At a subsequent post-race veterinary examination, LITTLE GUS was found to be sore in the right shoulder. Trainer D O’Leary was instructed that a veterinary certificate of soundness would be required before LITTLE GUS started again, and Mr O’Leary was also instructed that LITTLE GUS would have to trial to the satisfaction of stewards, before being permitted to start. Mr O’Leary advised that LITTLE GUS would now be sent for a lengthy spell.
MAN OF ILLUSION sprung its off hind plate during running.
A post-race veterinary examination of HE’S ALL SPEED revealed that the gelding had sustained an abrasion to the left hind cannon.

Race 7: Class 2 Handicap - 1200 metres
1st: BIANCA’S HERO 2nd: SIERRA SLAMMER 3rd: OLD GOLD FOR ME 4th: GOLD STARS
CHABBAZ (NZ) jumped in at the start and then lay in, in the early and middle stages.
TRIUNFO jumped inwards at the start, then had a tendency to lay in during the middle stages, and also in the straight, proving difficult to ride out.
THEBAREFOOTBUSHMAN and GREY CHIFFON came together at the start and bumped, resulting in THEBAREFOOTBUSHMAN becoming unbalanced and losing ground. Stewards questioned at length apprentice K Smith in the presence of stable foreman and owner Mr I Slater over the performance of THEBAREFOOTBUSHMAN. Apprentice Smith stated that the colt has always raced back, and she had been instructed to find the rail. She stated that after being crowded at the start, she became unbalanced and lost ground, and elected to move towards the rail in favour of being caught wide. She then pushed the colt along and settled in a rearward position. She then began to make some ground from the 600 metres whilst maintaining her position on the rail, as she had been instructed to remain on the rail, as the horse races best when on the fence. She felt that she pushed forward from the 600 metres where the horse began to make some ground. However, she felt that due to the pace of the race, she got further out of her ground than intended, as it was not until well into the straight, THEBAREFOOTBUSHMAN began to make good ground and finished strongly to the line. On questioning Mr Slater, he confirmed the instructions as stated by apprentice Smith, but was disappointed that she was further out of her ground than expected, leaving the 600 metres. Mr Slater produced evidence of minimal support for THEBAREFOOTBUSHMAN, stating that the stable is not known for supporting their horses. Stewards instructed apprentice Smith that when placed in a similar situation again, she must show more initiative to improve her mount at vital stages of the race. Stewards noted both explanations.
Apprentice L Fyfe (SIERRA SLAMMER) was severely reprimanded after he allowed his mount to shift in approaching the 100 metres, causing GOLD STARS to be crowded and eased.
Race 8: Class 6 Handicap - 1200 metres
1st: MIGHTY BLAZE 2nd: LAURISTAN 3rd: DELQUILO 4th: KAPITZA
DELQUILO jumped awkwardly.
MIGHTY BLAZE was slow to begin.
STANZA’S GIFT was caught wide during the early and middle stages, and was allowed to stride forward passing the 800 metres.
NORTHERN SPIRIT was caught wide during the early and middle stages.
MIGHTY BLAZE lay in throughout, and in the straight continued to lay in despite the rider’s efforts over the concluding stages.
Stewards questioned trainer G Taylor over the improved performance of MIGHTY BLAZE, and he stated that he had only been training the gelding for three weeks. He said that during this time, MIGHTY BLAZE had trialed well last week at the Gold Coast, but stated that he felt the gelding may be short of a run, as his intentions were to start MIGHTY BLAZE at Mackay and Townsville over the coming weeks. He also stated that the previous trainer had mentioned that the horse would be better suited mid field, rather than on the pace as in previous starts. Mr Taylor explanation was noted and he was instructed that a warning would be placed on the horses racing manners, due to its hanging in, in the straight.
KAPITZA eased from the heels of LAURISTAN at the 600 metres. Stewards instructed jockey A Best (TOPAZIOS) and L Timson (KOBI COVE) to exercise more care, when nearing the 200 metres, both mounts shifted ground whilst under pressure, resulting in COMPETE and POKOMO, which had attempted a similar run, to be hampered, resulting in POKOMO losing ground.
