GENERAL:

Trainer A. Stephens was found guilty of a charge under A.R. 175(j) in that she used insulting language towards a steward in relation to his duties. Mrs Stephens was fined $200.

Race 1: The Rock Building Society Maiden Handicap - 1050 metres
1st BENERAZI 2nd DUAN THEO 3rd BAGNACE 4th - RICORDO

Stewards permitted the late scratching of MENACING ROCKET, at 9.00 a.m. due to an embargo that had been placed on the training of the gelding. Stewards ordered under AR 50 the gelding's nomination now be refused until such time as approval is given for W. Cook to train the horse.

NO HAY SEGUNDO (J. P. Stanley) was difficult to load into the barriers.

MISS ALLYKAT (App. T. Wolfgram) was slow to begin.

At the start NO HAY SEGUNDO (J. P. Stanley) shifted out onto BENERAZI (L. Dillon)

Jockey J. P. Stanley reported that NO HAY SEGUNDO had commenced to hang out from the 900 metres and continued to do so for the majority of the event. Trainer D. Gardiner was advised that the gelding will be required to perform satisfactorily in a jump-out over a distance of more than 800 metres prior to its next race start.

Near the 900 metres BERRYBEAR (J. Stephens), which was racing greenly, lay in and made contact with the running rail, resulting in MISS ALLYKAT (App. T. Wolfgram) having to be checked. Trainer A. Stephens was advised that a warning will be placed on the gelding's racing manners.

A post-race veterinary examination of NO HAY SEGUNDO (J. P. Stanley) did not reveal any abnormalities.

A post-race veterinary examination of PURE POETRY (C. Whiteley) revealed that the filly was mildly lame in the off foreleg. Stewards will follow up the matter with trainer G. Philpot.

Race 2: Ironfarmers Parts & Equipment QTIS 2YO Maiden Handicap - 1050 metres
1st CRAIGLEA SEAL 2nd TURTLE MAN 3rd CENTREFOLD BABE 4th - VAST ELEMENT

Stewards permitted the late scratching of LITTLE ANNIEROCKET at 7.41 a.m. Trainer Service Centre confirmed that trainer J. Manzelmann had attempted to scratch the filly before the closing time for scratchings, but due to the volume of communications Mr Manzelmann had been unable to meet the deadline.

After GO SAI was placed in the barriers it was observed that the gelding had blood in its mouth. GO SAI was removed from the barriers and underwent a veterinary examination, which revealed that the gelding had a laceration to its off hind stifle. Acting on the advice of the veterinary surgeon, stewards ordered the withdrawal of GO SAI at 1.46p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on GO SAI be refunded in full and that the following deductions apply:

6¢ in the dollar for the winner, CRAIGLEA SEAL
4¢ in the dollar for the place for the winner, CRAIGLEA SEAL
6¢ in the dollar for the place for 2nd, TURTLE MAN
12¢ in the dollar for the place for 3rd, CENTREFOLD BABE

VAST ELEMENT (L. Dillon) began awkwardly and shifted out onto CENTREFOLD BABE (D. Gill).

ANGRY ON RUM (App. A. Kitson) jumped out and bumped TURTLE MAN (App. A. Taylor), which became unbalanced when racing between ANGRY ON RUM and SIMON BON ROCKET (T. Bannon).

For a short distance near the 900 metres ROYAL JESS (App. C. Pye) hung out and then raced wide for the majority of the event.

Near the 400 metres Jockey L. Dillon, the rider of VAST ELEMENT, dropped his whip.

Approaching the 350 metres VAST ELEMENT (L. Dillon) was held up on the heels of MASTER ROSHI (D. Evans), shifted in and was forced to race in restricted room on the heels of CENTREFOLD BABE and had to be shifted out to obtain clear running.

Jockey D. Evans was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that near the 900 metres he permitted MASTER ROSHI to shift in when not sufficiently clear of ASTRO NASCENTE (App. T. Wolfgram), which had to be checked and lost its rightful running, and ASTRO NASCENTE shifted out, and caused CRAIGLEA ZAMIA (J. P. Stanley) to be taken wider on the track. Jockey Evans’ licence to ride races was suspended for a period covering 2 race meetings, to commence at midnight on Saturday 20th April 2013 up to and including Saturday 27 April 2013. In determining penalty stewards were mindful of Jockey Evans' good riding record and the mannerisms of the horses involved. App. T. Wolfgram was admonished over his standard of evidence during the inquiry.

Race 3: Peter Conaghan Electrical Open Handicap - 1400 metres
1st LADY PANIA 2nd SPEEDSKATER 3rd CHINRUB 4th - OUR BOY LUKAS

On returning to scale it was noted that SPEEDSKATER (C. Whiteley) had a small cut to the inside of its nostril.

CRAIGLEA TINA (App. C. Pye) began awkwardly.

Stewards inquired into an incident near the 400 metres in which LADY PANIA (D. Evans) shifted out when insufficiently clear of CHINRUB (A. Coome), which was taken wider. Jockey Evans was reprimanded for careless riding. Stewards took into account the nature of the interference suffered in the incident.

Stewards sought an explanation as to the performance of BLAZE TO FORTUNE (App. T. Wolfgram). App. Wolfgram stated that the gelding worked hard in the early stages, however when placed under pressure BLAZE TO FORTUNE failed to respond to his riding and he was of the opinion that it may have come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the gelding was displaying a slow recovery rate. Stewards will seek a report from Trainer D. Schultz at a later date.

Race 4: Thomos Betta Electrical Class 6 Plate - 1100 metres
1st OUR BOY MALACHI 2nd DORF RILEY3rd LITTLE HOPE 4th - BAGABOB

Immediately prior to the start being effected TRUSTY GREY (App. D. McWhinney) reared and got its off foreleg over the front barrier gate. The gelding was removed from the barriers and examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon. Acting on his advice that TRUSTY GREY was lame in the off foreleg and not fit to take its place in the field, stewards ordered the withdrawal of the gelding at 2.58 p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on TRUSTY GREY be refunded in full and that the following deductions apply:

8¢ in the dollar for the win, for the winner, OUR BOY MALACHI
2¢ in the dollar for the place for the winner, OUR BOY MALACHI
22¢ in the dollar for the place for 2nd, DORF RILEY
19¢ in the dollar for the place for 3rd, LITTLE HOPE

At the start OUR BOY MALACHI (A. Coome) shifted in onto LITTLE HOPE (L. Dillon), which lost some ground.

Race 5: Day to Day Constructions BM 65 Handicap - 970 metres
1st BONNY THE VIPER 2nd SAINT BELLE 3rd SHOW A PRINCE 4th - TROPIC GEM

The start was delayed when, after some horses had been placed in the barriers, it was noted that the rear barrier gate of HARVZEE (T. Bannon) had broken, resulting in all horses having to be removed and relocated one barrier further out. TROPIC GEM (D. Evans), which made contact with the rear of the gate, underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to take its place in the field.

TROPIC GEM (D. Evans) and BLACK POINT (App. A. Kitson) were slow to begin.

For a short distance leaving the 800 metres SOCIETY LASS (App. T. Wolfgram) hung out and placed its rider in some difficulty rounding the home turn.

Near the 400 metres TROPIC GEM (D. Evans) was held up on the heels of RARE FIND (N. Patchett), and shifted out approaching the 200 metres to obtain clear running.

At the 400 metres CLICK UP (A. Coome) shifted out and bumped SOCIETY LASS (App. T. Wolfgram).

Leaving the 100 metres Jockey L. Dillon, the rider of SAINT BELLE, knocked the whip from the grasp of Jockey C. Whiteley, the rider of SHOW A PRINCE.

NINEDAYFORTNIGHT (App. C. Pye), TELLKANE (J. P. Stanley) and SOCIETY LASS (App. T. Wolfgram) raced wide throughout.

Stewards sought an explanation for the performance of TELLKANE. Jockey J. P. Stanley stated that the gelding had been unusually fractious behind the barriers and then raced flat and in his opinion may have come to the end of its preparation. The stewards will seek a follow-up interview with trainer D. Gardiner in regard to the horse's future preparation.

Race 6: Park Avenue Hotel Class 1 Handicap - 1300 metres
1st VOLTURNUS 2nd CHOIRS 3rd DAVANNA 4th - BLACK BOOKER

Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer J. Marlow for the late arrival of AFLEET ASSASSIN on course due to transport difficulties.

CHOIRS (App. T. Wolfgram) was a little slow to begin.

FICKLE BUSINESS (App. S. McGovern) began awkwardly and shortly after the start shifted in slightly, resulting in IOWNAPRINCE (D. Evans) having to be steadied.

Approaching the 900 metres EAGLE HAS LANDED (T. O'Hara) laid in, despite the efforts of its rider, and caused AFLEET ASSASSIN (L. Dillon) to be tightened for room and lose ground.

In the early and middle stages of the straight, Jockey T. O'Hara had difficulty riding EAGLE HAS LANDED which was inclined to lay in.

App. T. Wolfgram pleaded guilty to a charge under A.R. 144 in that he failed to weigh in after riding CHOIRS into 2nd place. App. Wolfgram was fined $500. In assessing penalty stewards were mindful of the seriousness of the matter; however they also took into account the relative inexperience of Apprentice Wolfgram, and that this was his first offence of this nature.

Race 7: Woollam Constructions Class 4 Handicap - 1600 metres
1st LIGHT RIO 2nd MCFERRIN 3rd NOT WITHOUT SIN 4th - NOSTOPPINTHEMUSIC

PURE SUNSET (R. Kerwin) was slow to begin.

In the early and middle stages HOLD THAT THOUGHT (T. O'Hara) over-raced.

PURE SUNSET and HOLD THAT THOUGH raced wide throughout.

Stewards sought an explanation regarding the performance of THE SHOOTER. Jockey L. Dillon stated that the gelding had been disappointing and was of the opinion that the heavy impost in today's event may have affected its performance. Jockey Dillon added that in his view the horse had been well placed in the event, however THE SHOOTER over-raced for a short distance near the 1200 metres and when placed under pressure failed to respond to his riding. Jockey Dillon said that the gelding may have come to the end of its prepatation. Trainer L. Rowe also expressed his disappointment with the performance of THE SHOOTER and said that being challenged for the lead in the early and middle stages may have been detrimental to the horse's performance. Mr Rowe added that he will assess the horse's racing program and advise stewards in the days following the event.
