When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of FEHER ARANY, jockey T. Treichel stated that the horse did not feel comfortable on the cushion track and was under pressure from the 600m. Trainer’s representative Miss K. Loy could offer no explanation for the performance, and was instructed to inform trainer T. Bailey to advise stewards of any abnormality that may become apparent with the horse which may have had a bearing on the performance. A post-race veterinary examination of FEHER ARANY failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Stewards opened an inquiry into J. Bates riding of MORGAN FACTOR, in particular in the early stages where the horse travelled some distance back from the second-last horse, and also the vigour used on the horse between the 500m and 300m. J. Bates explained that he had been instructed by owner Mr A. McKey to allow the horse to settle at the rear of the field and to have the horse relaxed and not overracing. He also had been instructed to take runs through the field rather than travel wide as the horse had not been racing up to expectations of late. In relation to the vigour used on the horse, jockey Bates stated that he elected to take a run to the inside and to balance the gelding up on straightening and to apply pressure from the 350m. J. Bates further added that he had been instructed to restrict his use of the whip on MORGAN FACTOR. After taking evidence from jockey Bates, trainer L. Gough and owner A. Mckey, the explanations were noted. Stewards also took evidence regarding the bona fides of the training of MORGAN FACTOR. This inquiry was adjourned to a date to be fixed.

Treichel), resulting in that runner being taken in on to ROBSON (K. Banks), which was also forced inwards, tightening the running of ROOM TWO SISTER (M. Speers), which was forced to check and shift in, tightening the running of FEARLESS HERO (M. Hughes), which also had to be checked. D. Browne was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 19 July and to expire at midnight, 31 July.

When questioned regarding the riding tactics adopted on THREE MILE ISLAND, trainer Mrs S. McCormack informed stewards that she had instructed jockey Katsidis to have the horse in a handy position today which is in accordance with the horse’s normal pattern of racing.
Jockey Katsidis confirmed Mrs McCormack issued instructions to that effect, however added that in the race today, the horse did not begin as well as the runners drawn to his inside, and as a result he elected to ease THREE MILE ISLAND after a short distance rather than bustle it and risk being caught wide. Jockey Katsidis further stated that his mount was better suited travelling with cover as a result of the circumstances at the start. The explanation was noted.
