From Doomben 5.8.09 – Race 5

Jockey D. Browne was reprimanded for using his whip on SEQUALO REVENGE in 2 successive strides on more than one occasion.


Race 1: Reed Property Group CG&E Maiden H'cap - 1100m
1st – A Boy Called Sue 2nd – Harney 3rd – Len’s Gift 4th – Moringa’s King

Trainer T. Hall was fined $100 for presenting ELUSIVE SHADOW to the enclosure with incorrect gear.

The start of the race was delayed due to COUNT IGLESIA and A BOY CALLED SUE being reluctant to load.

ELUSIVE SHADOW was slow to begin.

A BOY CALLED SUE (K. Pope) jumped outwards at the start, making contact with HARNEY (A. Pattillo)

GENUINE SIN (C. Priest) also jumped outwards at the start, making contact with COUNT IGLESIA (K. Sawyers).

HARNEY (A. Pattillo) raced wide throughout.

When questioned regarding the performance of FAIR RISE, J. Taylor stated that the gelding began only fairly and in his opinion failed to handle the track in the early stages when racing behind horses. He added however that once obtaining clear running in the straight, FAIR RISE finished the race off well.

A post-race veterinary examination of ELUSIVE SHADOW failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

A BOY CALLED SUE bled during the event. Trainer M. Mair was advised that the gelding would be barred from racing for a period of 3 months.


Race 2: Sunshine Coast Daily Class 6 H'cap – 1100m
1st – Snorkel 2nd – Geebeetee 3rd – Demolir 4th – Zahbaj

LIONS AND DRAGONS (J. Taylor) was tightened for room on jumping away between MULGA BOB (N. Thomas) and GEEBEETEE (J. Byrne), which shifted in.

Leaving the 900m, LIONS AND DRAGONS (J. Taylor) commenced to overrace and continued to do so until near the 800m.

DEMOLIR (S. Katsidis) raced wide throughout and commenced to get its head on the side and laid in the straight, proving difficult for S. Katsidis to ride out to the finish.

A post-race veterinary examination of BEST PUPIL failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.


Race 3: Win Television Class 3 Plate - 2150m
1st –Elton’s Son 2nd – Real World 3rd – Danger Line 4th - Sigurd

AMAIZEMEA (A. Spinks) jumped away awkwardly.

NO LIMITATION raced wide in the early stages.

When questioned, jockey J. Letherby stated that his instructions were to lead if possible on SHOT BAR, however the gelding left the gates awkwardly and got back further than he anticipated, taking up a position off the pace. He added however in the middle stages when the speed slackened slightly, he improved forward and raced outside the leader.

When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance of ELTON’S SON, trainer J. Fahey stated that at its previous start at Beaudesert when 8th of 12 over 1400 metres, the gelding was reluctant to take up a position in the early stages however finished the race off well. He added that, in his opinion, ELTON’S SON was suited over the longer distance of today’s event.

When questioned, M. Hellyer, rider of NO LIMITATION, stated he had been instructed to lead if possible, however he also had been told that if the horse was pushed too early it would overrace. Bearing this in mind, he did not ride NO LIMITATION along in the early stages and as a consequence was obliged to race wide until near the 1300m when he was able to get to the front. He acknowledged today it had taken him too long to reach the front, however in all the circumstances he had done his best. The explanation tendered by M. Hellyer was recorded. A post-race veterinary examination of NO LIMITATION failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

The veterinary surgeon also reported that DANGER LINE had broken down in the off fore tendon. Trainer K. Carrol will be advised that DANGER LINE will required a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.


Race 4: Hot 91 Maiden H'cap - 1600m
1st – Prince Telesto 2nd – Wild Wild Rose 3rd – Kalinga Echo 4th - Sobo

SIRIUS QUEST (K. Gates) and BUCHANAN BOY (J. Kropp) were slow to begin.

MORGAN FACTOR (A. Merritt) overraced in the early stages.

SIRIUS QUEST (K. Gates) overraced in the early and middle stages.

When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of MONTEFALCO, K. Pope stated that the horse did not travel well throughout, and when placed under pressure in the straight, ran on only fairly. He added that MONTEFALCO was, in his opinion, disappointing. K. Pope further stated that the connections intended to spell the horse.

A post-race veterinary examination of SOBO revealed the gelding had sustained a laceration to the off fore leg.

A post-race veterinary examination of MISS SANCTITY failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.


Race 5: Sky Racing F&M H'cap - 1100m
1st – Sky Blond 2nd – Mulsanne 3rd – Sunday Belle 4th – Swift Cash

On return to scale a protest was lodged by trainer Mr R. Bradshaw, trainer of the second placegetter, MULSANNE, against SKY BLOND being declared the winner, alleging interference in the straight. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the patrol video, stewards found that on 2 occasions in the home straight, SKY BLOND did shift ground forward of MULSANNE, however stewards were of the opinion that the effect on MULSANNE due to this shift was minimal and did not warrant a reversal of the placings.

SUNDAY BELLE (K. Pope) jumped away awkwardly.

STALWART FLIGHT (J. Kropp) jumped outwards at the start, making contact with VOLANT CHEVAL (M. Morris), which shifted out, forcing CHRISTARK (O. Turpin) wider.

App. M. Hellyer, rider of SKY BLOND, was severely reprimanded for failing to make sufficient effort to prevent his mount from shifting out nearing the winning post, which resulted in that horse taking MOON LADY (K. Sawyers) out on to OUR GIRL GIGGLES (A. Spinks), which had to be steadied when tightened for room. M. Heller, rider of SKY BLOND, was severely reprimanded.

Apprentice O. Turpin, rider of CHRISTARK, explained that in the run to the finish line he was unable to obtain clear running and as consequence did not ride the horse out as he normally would.


Race 6: Select Bathroom & Plumbing Centre Class 1 H'cap - 1400m
1st – Left Hook 2nd – Mr Solitary 3rd – Hamatym 4th – Our Wave/Ashland

LEFT HOOK (K. Pope), which had been slow to begin, was tightened for room on jumping away between LANGTIME (J. Taylor) and MR SOLITARY (J. Byrne), which was taken out by HAMATYM (J. Kropp).

CHAR INNOCENT (R. Goltz) was slow to begin.

SWELL (N. Thomas) overraced in the early stages.

Approaching the 1100, SWELL got its head up and shifted out, making contact with OUR WAVE (M. Radecker), which became unbalanced as a result.

ASHLAND (K. Gates) raced wide throughout.

K. Pope was reprimanded for using his whip in 5 successive strides on LEFT HOOK.

Prior to the start of this race, Mr T. Hall, trainer of THE CHEROKEE GREY, advised that it was his intention today from the difficult gate to try to ride the horse quietly. Following the race, apprentice O. Turpin advised that the horse left the gates well, started to pull quite hard, and despite the instructions he had been given he had little alternative but to improve into a forward position.


Race 7: Landsborough Cup Sun 23 August Class 1 H'cap - 1000m
1st – Krugerrand 2nd –Kar Ketch Me 3rd – Kalinga Lady 4th – Daneodin

The start of this race was delayed due to OPTIMIST PRIME undergoing farrier attention.

KAR KETCH ME (M. Usher), which was a little slow to begin, was then tightened for room between ULTIMATE CHOICE (K. Pope) and CRAIGLEA SCORCHER (L. Appo), which shifted out.

SHOVELLE (K. Gates) jumped away awkwardly.

Near the 200m, ULTIMATE CHOICE (K. Pope) raced up on to the heels of MUDDY MILLIE (O. Turpin) and was obliged to alter course inwards.

SHOVELLE raced wide throughout.
