Race 1: Slade Bloodstock Class 3 Plate - 2000m
1st – Win For Wilson 2nd – Provincial 3rd – Famous Fortune 4th - Clonmacnoise

FAMOUS FORTUNE (C. Small) was slow to begin.

After being caught wide during the early stages, PROVINCIAL (R. McMahon) was ridden forward to a position outside the leader near the 1400m.

When the pace was only steady during the middle stages, CHALLOMAN (K. Wharton), which was in a position near the tail of the field, was ridden forward from a point near the 1200m to assume a position outside the lead approaching the 800m.

Near the 1000m, SEATTLE DANE (A. Hearn) shifted wider on the track to improve, however was again forced wide near the 800m when TWILIGHT REEF (T. Bell) shifted out to improve, resulting in both horses to race wide for the remainder of the event.

J. Taylor reported that CLONMACNOISE had a tendency to hang out throughout the event, and, in his opinion, may have resented the kick-back off the track from other horses. He stated that he recommended to connections that, in his opinion, the gelding would benefit from the addition of blinkers and perhaps being ridden in a more forward position in future starts.

Race 2: Finchorp Systems Class 1 H'cap – 1400m
1st – Conyuen 2nd – Mount Freedom 3rd – Weedreamed 4th – Emerton

HE’S NO SAINT (L. Finlay), which was fractious in the enclosure prior to the event, dislodging its jockey, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.

WAR STORIES (K. Wharton) began awkwardly and lost ground.

LENTINI MIST (A. Hearn) was inclined to shift in under pressure in the home straight.

Following this event, MOUNT FREEDOM collapsed in the vicinity of the winner’s stall and despite veterinary attention, the gelding passed away a short time later. A post mortem examination will be performed on the gelding.

Stewards afforded M. Cahill the opportunity to comment on the performance of EMERTON. He stated that he was satisfied with the tempo set in the lead during the early and middle stages, however EMERTON commenced to weaken from the 600m and became very unbalanced in the home straight. Jockey Cahill added that as EMERTON was having its first start over 1400m, it may not have run out the distance strongly. Trainer M. Mair confirmed his disappointment with the performance of EMERTON, adding that the gelding would now be sent for a spell.

Race 3: Placemat (Kitchneware) Maiden H'cap – 1100m
1st – Vain At Heart 2nd – Bag of Riddles 3rd – Margaret’s Wish 4th – Doubting Thomas

Trainer M. Mair was fined $100 for presenting DOUBTING THOMAS with steel work shoes. In assessing penalty, stewards took into account that this matter came to the attention of farrier staff well before the gelding was presented to the mounting enclosure to race.

MEGADEMA (J. Taylor), which was slow to begin, was hampered shortly after the start between DOUBTING THOMAS (K. Pope) and BAG OF RIDDLES (M. Hellyer), which shifted in.

DOUBTING THOMAS raced wide before being ridden vigorously in an attempt to obtain the lead in the early stages.

BAG OF RIDDLES and ADALFE (M. Vance) raced wide throughout.

Race 4: Stripe Pro Signs Maiden H'cap – 1400m
1st – Roselon 2nd – Monetary Man 3rd – The Push 4th – Craiglea Calipso

As A. Mundy was ill, M. Hellyer was substituted as the rider of BOUND FOR ABUDAHABI.

Trainer C. Morphy was fined $100 for failing to secure the Elastoplast bandages in accordance with the provisions of the National Gear Register.

BOUND FOR ADUBHABI (M. Hellyer) was tightened for room at the start between RAISE YOUR PULSE (E. Wilkinson), which shifted out, and RUTHLESS BABE (J. Hoopert), which shifted in.

PRINCESS PEACH (A. Kitson) was slow to begin.

PRINCESS PEACH, which raced wide in the early stages, was ridden forward to assume the lead at a point near the 900m.

BOUND FOR ABUDHABI (M. Hellyer) raced wide throughout.

Stewards afforded E. Wilkinson the opportunity to comment on the performance of RAISE YOUR PULSE. He stated that at no stage throughout the race did the mare travel comfortably and after being forced wider near the 600m when CRAIGLEA CALIPSO shifted out to improve, RAISE YOUR PULSE failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing from that point onwards. Trainer M. Moroney advised that in light of today’s performance he would now discuss with the owner’s the gelding’s immediate racing future.

Stewards questioned L. Finlay, rider of first starter HEART BEATS TRUE as to the performance of that gelding, which lost ground quickly at a point leaving the 900m. L. Finlay stated that HEART BEATS TRUE raced greenly throughout the event and resented the kick-back from the other runners throughout the event. He added that, in his opinion, it was the stable’s intention to step the horse up in races over more than the distance of today’s event, for example 1400m, and that the gelding would take benefit from the race experience as well as being better suited on the grass surfaces. Trainer J. McLachlan agree with jockey Finlay’s comments, adding that he would experiment with the addition of blinkers for the horse during trackwork.

Race 5: Greensill Concreting & Pumping QTIS 2yo Maiden Plate - 1000m
1st – Splendent Choice 2nd – Surf Fire 3rd – Talon 4th – Stamp Of Authority

T. Bell was examined by the doctor and stood down from his engagement on SPLENDENT CHOICE and MEDESANO in Race 7 due to illness. J. Taylor was substituted as the rider of SPLENDENT CHOICE and P. Schmidt as the rider of MEDESANO.

THEPENDULUM (D. Robinson) was slow to begin.

CRAIGLEA ENCORE (J. Kropp) and GO THIAGO GO (M. Cahill) both jumped away awkwardly, losing ground.

GO THIAGO GO raced wide throughout.

Stewards afforded K. Pope the opportunity to comment on the performance of TALON. K. Pope stated that TALON raced greenly during the early stages and, in his opinion, may have resented the kick-back and as a result, he was forced to pressure the horse to maintain its position through the early and middle stages. He further stated that from rounding the home turn and in the home straight, TALON commenced to lay in and he was forced to stop riding on a number of occasions and straighten the gelding. Jockey Pope further added that given that this was the horse’s first race start, it would take improvement from the race experience. Trainer M. Mair confirmed his disappointment in the gelding’s performance, adding that TALON would now be stepped up over more ground in a suitable race on the grass surface for its next race start.

A post-race veterinary examination of LET THE CHIPS FALL, which weakened badly over the concluding stages, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 6: Sunshine Coast Business Associates Class 1 H'cap - 1100m
1st – Cavalryman 2nd – Leveraction 3rd – Saveeda 4th – Raven Raider

LEVERACTION (K. Wharton) was slow to begin.

LEVERACTION laid in under pressure in the home straight, obliging K. Wharton to stop riding vigorously with the whip near the 100m and straighten the gelding.

MINONDER (E. Wilkinson) and LEVERACTION, raced wide throughout.

Jockey S. Scriven, rider of CAVALRYMAN, was reprimanded for using his whip more than 5 times prior to the 100m.

Stewards questioned A. Spinks regarding the performance of BILLY BE GOOD. He said that after beginning well the gelding failed to muster early speed and when positioned at the tail of the field resented the kick-back from the other runners and lost further ground. Jockey Spinks added that he then shifted BILLY BE GOOD wider on the track in an attempt to avoid the kick-back and in the home straight the gelding did make up ground. Trainer K. Cotsiopoulos advised stewards that in light of today’s performance she would attempt to find a suitable race on a grass surface for the horse’s next race start.

Race 7: TJS Services Qld Benchmark 80 H'cap - 1100m
1st – Trail Boss 2nd – Nickiera 3rd – Medesano 4th – Heartsun

Trainer D. Bell advised that SIR MONASHEE in recent starts has been ridden with cover from awkward alleys, however his jockey would be instructed today to be more positive during the early stages from the better barrier draw.

TRAIL BOSS (K. Matheson) and ULTRA (A. Kitson) was slow to begin.

MEDESANO (P. Schmidt) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

MEDESANO raced wide throughout.

G. Cooksley reported that NICKIERA was inclined to lay out during the middle stages and in the home straight.

Stewards questioned G. Cooksley regarding the tactics adopted on NICKIERA, in particular his reasons for leading, which was in contrast to the horse’s recent racing pattern. G. Cooksley stated he had not been given specific instructions other than to be positive out of the barriers. Jockey Cooksley added that after beginning well, he elected to push NICKIERA forward to assume the lead in order to obtain a position closer to the fence. Stewards noted the explanation.

Jockey E. Wilkinson was afforded the opportunity to comment on the performance of INVINCIBLE MATE, which was below market expectations. Jockey Wilkinson stated that after obtaining a favourable position outside the leader during the early stages, the gelding was under pressure from the 600m and proved disappointing in the home straight. Trainer J. McLachlan stated that INVINCIBLE MATE was obliged to work hard from the wide barrier and this may have had a bearing on the performance. He added he intended to continue with the horse’s current preparation.

Race 8:www.sctc.com.au Benchmark 75 H'cap - 1400m
1st – Issues 2nd – Extreme Mover 3rd – Nero’s Fire 4th – Agent Blue

MISHANI ARCHER (J. Taylor) was slow to begin.

NERO’S FIRE (J. Stanley), after being caught wide during the early stages, was ridden forward to a position in the lead approaching the 900m and at that point shifted in, causing ISSUES (P. Schmidt) to be steadied. J. Stanley, rider of NERO’S FIRE, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

J. Taylor reported that MISHANI ARCHER resented the kick-back from other runners, and this had a detrimental effect on the gelding’s overall performance.
