GENERAL

After overnight rain and further rain this morning, stewards inspected the track and took the decision to transfer the meeting to the cushion track. As a result of the transfer, the distances of Races 1, 6 and 8 were reduced from 1200m to 1100m.

As apprentice K. Matheson and jockey G. Cooksley were ill, and as apprentice T. Harrison was indisposed due to personal circumstances, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1: BUNDABERG RUM QTIS 2YO H’CAP - 1100m

GAYLEN (B. Appo), which had blood in its mouth upon arrival at the barriers, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.

FIRST RELEASE (P. Hammersley) blundered on jumping away and lost ground.

Stewards inquired into the handling of GAYLEN. Of particular concern to stewards was the early and middle stages when apprentice B. Appo positioned GAYLEN three wide whilst overracing when it appeared he had opportunity to allow the gelding to stride to the lead and obtain a position closer to the fence. Of further concern was apprentice Appo’s actions in allowing GAYLEN to shift wider on the track rounding the home turn resulting in the eventual winner DECILLION (S. Lanigan) obtaining a run to his inside. Trainer T. Thomas advised stewards that he had instructed apprentice Appo to position GAYLEN outside the leader one off if possible and stated that he was surprised when after travelling a short distance apprentice Appo was restraining GAYLEN when in a three wide position. Apprentice Appo stated that he was of the opinion that FIRST RELEASE would be the likely leader and when that horse was slowly away, he formed the view that PALACE WHISPERS (J. Byrne) would then lead, however FIRST RELEASE improved to the inside of PALACE WHISPERS, causing him to be positioned three wide. It was at this point near the 1000m that he elected to take hold in an attempt to obtain a trailing position behind PALACE WHISPERS, however GAYLEN commenced to overrace and did so until leaving the 600m. He further stated that in hindsight he would have been better served allowing GAYLEN to stride when it became apparent the filly would not settle after leaving the 900m. Stewards, after taking into account all the evidence, advised apprentice Appo that in their opinion his ride fell below a standard which would be expected from an apprentice of his experience and as such, under AR. 92A, stewards ordered that apprentice Appo must attend two rider skills panel sessions, both of which must be undertaken within the next 6 weeks. Apprentice Appo was further advised that should he not complete these sessions within this period, he would be stood down from riding until such time as he had fulfilled that requirement.

GAYLEN was again inspected by the veterinary surgeon post-race, with no significant findings other than the presence of blood that was noted pre-race.

Race 2: YALUMBA CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1000m

GYPSY’S REVENGE (T. Bell) raced three wide and laid in under pressure over the concluding stages, causing its rider to stop riding and straighten leaving the 100m.

Apprentice T. Wolfgram reported to stewards that TAKE A JACKET was unable to muster sufficient early speed to hold a more forward position and he was forced to place pressure on the horse during the early stages, adding that the horse would be better suited to races over longer distances.

CAMPIONESSA (B. Appo) lost its near fore plate in running.

Race 3: AINSWORTH GAME TECHNOLOGY BM85 H’CAP – 1600m

SHADOW BUSTER (P. Hammersley) overraced in the middle stages.

Race 4: COOROY HOTEL MAIDEN H’CAP - 1600m

CRAIGLEA RELOAD (R. Jamieson) and ZAPPA THE ROCKSTAR (T. Bell) were both slow to begin.

A. Spinks reported that GENERIS HEART overraced in the early and middle stages.

ZAPPA THE ROCKSTAR laid in under pressure in the home straight and made contact with MONITOR (L. Tarrant) on a number of occasions.

A post-race veterinary examination of OZMAN (K. Wharton) revealed lameness in the near foreleg. Trainer D. Wilson was advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance for OZMAN prior to its next start.

Apprentice L. Tarrant reported that MONITOR was sore in the off foreleg. A post-race veterinary examination of MONITOR revealed lameness in the off foreleg. Trainer M. Nolan was advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance for MONITOR prior to its next start.

Race 5: BELLVISTA TAVERN CLASS 3 H’CAP - 1400m

CHARSUI (L. Cassidy) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

ARAWAK (E. Wilkinson) raced wide in the early stages before being permitted to stride forward to the lead approaching the 800m.

J. Byrne reported that FELTHAM was not comfortable on today’s racing surface. A post-race veterinary examination of FELTHAM (J. Byrne) revealed the horse to be exhibiting a cough. A swab sample was taken from FELTHAM.

Race 6: RENEE’S FIGHT MAIDEN H’CAP - 1100m

The start of this race was delayed firstly due to holding for another venue and then was further delayed when PLAYGROUNDPRINCESS (A. Allen) proved difficult to load.

PLAYGROUNDPRINCESS stood flat-footed at the start and lost significant ground. Trainer T. Hurley was advised that PLAYGROUNDPRINCESS, which then performed poorly, would be required to satisfactorily barrier trial prior to its next start. Mr Hurley advised that PLAYGROUNDPRINCESS would be sent for an immediate spell.

Race 7: CELLARBRATIONS CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1600m

M. Hellyer reported that OVER IN SECONDS laid out throughout the event.

Race 8: CORONA CLASS 5 H’CAP - 1100m

RAPID LEICA DANE (R. Wiggins) jumped away awkwardly and made contact with DENWOOD (G. Killen).

BEAUX STRATA (J. Byrne) and RAPID LEICA DANE both raced wide throughout.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of COMAHNI, T. Bell explained that when asked for an effort approaching the home turn, the mare failed to respond to his riding and did not finish the race off as expected. A post-race veterinary examination of COMAHNI revealed no significant findings. A swab sample was taken from COMAHNI.
