RACE 1
YALUMBA WINES PLATE 1300 metres
On jumping away BIG CASINO had to be checked and NANJING and SHED THE LIGHT were hampered when tightened for room between AEROLITO and BONBARA which jumped away awkwardly and shifted in abruptly.
Approaching the 800 metres JESSIE’S SISTER had to be steadied off the heels of RIGHTO.
Passing the 500 metres JESSIE’S SISTER shifted out to improve and bumped INTREPID SEA.
Rounding the home turn and for some distance in the straight RIGHTO was held up behind the tiring COUNTY QUEEN.
After leaving the 300 metres apprentice M. Rice rider of JESSIE’S SISTER attempted a narrow run to the inside of EAGLE’S GLANCE and as a result struck the running rail and became unbalanced. EAGLE’S GLANCE then shifted out to relieve the pressure and brushed COUNTY QUEEN. Apprentice M. Rice rider of JESSIE’S SISTER was advised to exercise more care in future.
RACE 2
XXXX HANDICAP 1400 metres
Due to a printing error CORAL BAY was incorrectly shown in the racebook as a scratching.
At the start CORAL BAY and ZEDBISK were tightened between BONNIE MOON and SISTER ACE both of which shifted ground.
At the entrance to the straight REDGRAVE was obliged to shift out to avoid the heels of ALI’S ROSE and in doing so made contact with PENTECOST.
A post race Veterinary examination of BONNIE MOON failed to reveal any abnormality.
RACE 3
CALOUNDRA HEALTH SERVICE HANDICAP 1600 metres
As Garry Baker was indisposed he was replaced on ESTIMATION by S. Galloway.
LORD RUSTIC was slow to begin.
Approaching the 300 metres ESTIMATION shifted out to improve and brushed GOLDEN ZENA.
A post race Veterinary examination of ESTIMATION failed to reveal any abnormality.
RACE 4
PACIFIC FORD HANDICAP 1800 metres
Apprentice M. Dracos rider of BORN CHIC pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that after leaving the 300 metres he permitted his mount to shift out taking KAAPSICUM out on to TATHRA ROAD which in turn shifted out and made contact with the hind quarters of ROYAL ASSASSIN.
Apprentice Dracos was suspended for a period of 7 meetings to commence at midnight on Friday 25th January 2002 and to expire at midnight on Sunday 3rd February 2002.
RACE 5
FORD ESCAPE HANDICAP 1300 metres
Trainer Paul Jones was advised that a warning has been placed on HE’S ALL OURS which was difficult to load.
SURPRISE ATTACK and EIMEO BAY were both slow to begin.
After beginning well GATEWAY refused to settle in the early and middle stages of the event.
A post race Veterinary examination of GATEWAY failed to reveal any abnormality.
RACE 6
CALOUNDRA RSL HANDICAP 1300 metres
On return to scale a protest was lodged by G. Colless rider of 2nd placed MR. ALERT against TWISTED (Glen Killen) being declared the winner, alleging interference after leaving the 200 metres. It was established that after passing the 200 metres TWISTED commenced to shift ground and made contact with MR. ALERT on three occasions. Bearing in mind the margin of a short neck which separated both horses at the finish, stewards upheld the objection and amended the placings to read:
1st MR ALERT
2nd TWISTED
3rd NELLIE DE AIR
Jockey G. Killen rider of TWISTED was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.
RACE 7
BARKERS REFRIGERATION & AIR CONDITIONING CALOUNDRA CITY SUMMER CUP 1400 metres
Trainer L. Brazier was fined the sum of $50 for failing to declare a rider for KILAMANJARO by the required time.
The start was delayed when OMBRA DELLA SERA broke its tongue tie on the way to the barriers. As the tongue tie was unable to be replaced, the horse raced without this gear.
MALLET was slow to begin.
SEA BREEZE shifted out at the start and made contact with HIRSCHBERG.
SKY ROYAL jumped away awkwardly.
OMBRA DELLA SERA was inclined to lay out making the home turn.
Near the 300 metres ALPINE EXPRESS shifted out to improve and brushed SPY KING.
When questioned regarding the improved performance of OMBRA DELLA SERA trainer M. Mair stated that at its last start at Doomben on 29th December 2001 the horse blundered badly out of the barriers and lost ground. He also advised he had added blinkers to the gear of OMBRA DELLA SERA for today’s event as he had been disappointed with the previous efforts of the horse.
RACE 8
CALOUNDRA HOSPITAL EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT HANDICAP 1000 metres
BRAVE ACTION and CRAIGLEA HOPE were both slow to begin.
At the start COOCHEN JENNY WREN was tightened for room between KITTEN and DISTINCT DANGER both of which shifted ground.
Shortly after the start BRAVE ACTION and GEE ESS TEE were hampered by KITTEN which was taken out by COOCHEN JENNY WREN and RIDE THE RAINBOW which shifted in after making contact with FLORACE.
BRAVE ACTION was forced to race wide for the remainder of the event.
Near the 600 metres CRAIGLEA HOPE shifted out and made contact with TYPIFY.
For some distance near the 200 metres CRAIGLEA HOPE was held up for clear running between DISTINCT DANGER and MCGINTY ROSE.
ALL WINNERS WERE SWABBED.
