Stewards questioned S. Galloway regarding his handling of HUMAN NATURE in this event. S. Galloway stated that after receiving interference at the start he elected to settle the gelding back in the field and approaching the 800 metres he was unable to improve without travelling wider on the track. Approaching the 600 metres he was able to follow CARRIBEAN BENNY and go forward. He further explained that shortly after entering the straight he elected to shift to the inside of CARRIBEAN BENNY to improve as in his opinion, with the rail being out 10 metres today, it was better to stay towards the inside.
This explanation of S. Galloway was noted.
B. Bowditch trainer of BILLY CART HILL was questioned regarding the improved performance of the gelding in winning today’s event. He stated that whilst the gelding was beaten at its last start by 7 lengths at Caloundra on the 7th April 2002 he was not completely disappointed as BILLY CART HILL was obliged to race 3 wide in the early and middle stages and compounded over the final 200 metres after being forced wider in the straight. Mr. Bowditch further stated that in his opinion the gelding would take natural improvement from that run and he today instructed his rider to take up a forward position as he did not anticipate any notable speed in the race. Mr. Bowditch also added that he had expected improvement today as over the last few weeks he had remedied a wind sucking problem with the gelding.
Apprentice Z. Purton confirmed the riding instructions. These explanations were noted and Stewards adjourned this matter to enable further scrutiny of Interstate betting transactions.
