TRACK RATING: Slow / Dead
RACE 1: MEN AT WORK LABOUR HIRE HANDICAP - 1200M.
SWORN TO ACTION jumped in at the start hampering ARABIAN GIFT.
When being restrained approaching the 1000 metres ABSTRACTED shifted out hampering SWORN TO ACTION.
Approaching the first turn MYARBEE commenced to race fiercely when being restrained off the heels of TAILOR and in doing so MYARBEE became unbalanced after shifting in and brushing the running rail.
BALRINO BOY commenced to hang out rounding the first turn and continued to do so for the remainder of the event.
Shortly after entering the straight ABSTRACTED shifted out abruptly to obtain clear running.
When questioned regarding the performance of MYARBEE jockey K Pope stated that in his opinion the gelding failed to handle the track conditions.
RACE 2: PACIFIC FORD PTY LTD HANDICAP - 1200M.
Apprentice D Van Bekkum was fined the sum of $100 for failing to fulfil her engagement on AUSSIE SHEILA. The mare was subsequently ridden by apprentice L Fitzsimmons.
THE MOLE and JUST HOLLY were both slow to begin.
JESSICA BLUE EYES jumped in at the start hampering ADDICTED LADY.
When questioned regarding his handling of LADY MAYHEM jockey D Craven stated he was instructed to ride the horse back in the field but LADY MAYHEM commenced to over race in the early stages when caught wide on the track. He further stated that rounding the first turn he was forced wider when AUSSIE SHEILA shifted out. LADY MAYHEM remained wide in the middle stages and approaching the 600 metres was again forced wider by AUSSIE SHEILA which at that stage was taken out by ADDICTED LADY. These explanations were noted.
Following the running of race 2 the track rating was upgraded to DEAD.
RACE 3: BLACKLAW CIVIL CONTRACTORS HANDICAP - 1000M.
As jockey Leanne McCoy was to be overweight she was replaced on CONDAMINE DANCER by D Green. L. McCoy was subsequently fined the sum of $50.
TELL ME BLUE, DARK AND DISCREET and GIANTE were all slow to begin.
SEQUALO JOY and FINAL PREP were both tightened at the start between GRANDWAY CHAMP and AMIES which jumped inwards.
RACE 4: WORK DIRECTIONS AUSTRALIA HANDICAP - 1000M.
As jockey M Dale was stood down by the Club Doctor he was replaced on NOT ANOTHER by L. Appo.
KEEP COMING jumped away awkwardly.
RACE 5: THOMPSON McNICHOL HANDICAP - 1000M.
GO ARNIE jumped out at the start tightening MAIN DRIVE on to LION QUEEN which in turn brushed PENCIL.
BABE OF THE YEAR jumped away awkwardly and made contact with PENCIL.
RACE 6: DENMAC PLUMBING HANDICAP - 1200M.
On return to scale a protest was lodged by Scott Thurlow rider of 3rd placed HILDA CHOICE against START ME UP ridden by Lyall Appo being declared 2nd alleging interference at the 200 metres.
It was established that approaching the 200 metres whilst being ridden along START ME UP shifted in when not clear resulting in HILDA CHOICE having to be steadied to avoid the heels of that runner and as a result HILDA CHOICE was obliged to shift out to obtain clear running.
Stewards were of the opinion that the ground lost in this incident was greater than the finishing margin and the protest was upheld and and placings amended to 3 : 7 : 2 : 5.
At a subsequent inquiry L Appo rider of START ME UP was reminded of his obligation to be fully clear when shifting ground in future.
HILDA CHOICE was slow to begin.
RACE 7: KOASTAL TRENZ HANDICAP - 1400M.
As apprentice B Albuino was indisposed he was replaced on KINDILAN by apprentice Z Purton.
SAGIT HERO jumped out at the start and brushed KINDILAN.
MIRROR was obliged to race wide throughout the event.
Jockey N Day pleaded guilty to a charge under AR 137(b) in that he failed to ride 5th placegetter HUGGER MUGGER out fully to the end of the event.
N Day was subsequently fined the sum of $200.
RACE 8: TRAVELWORLD CALOUNDRA HANDICAP - 1800M.
Rounding the first turn AZTECO commenced to over race and lost ground when being restrained off the heels of LOCAL PROSPECT.
Apprentice P Hammersley rider of DOUBLE EL AITCH pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR 137A in that approaching the 100 metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of SNUG HEAT causing that horse to be checked by its rider.
P Hammersley was suspended for a period of 7 meetings to commence at midnight on Thursday 4th September 2003 and to expire at midnight on Sunday 14th September 2004.
All winners were sent to be swabbed.
