SUNSHINE COAST TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SUN. 1 AUGUST 2004

STEWARDS PANEL: Mr C. Clifford (Chairman), Mr W. Flynn, Mr S. Hurford.

WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD

RAIL - 6M - 850-400, 5m remainder

GENERAL: The following riders were indisposed and replaced as follows:

RACE 1: AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY H'CAP - 1200M.

OLD SCOTCH was slow to begin.

LEICA LAUNCH jumped away awkwardly.

In the early part of the race, SPECIAL LANGFUHR got its head up in the air and commenced to race ungenerously.

TRIKWILA was obliged to race wide in the early and middle stages.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of WORSHIPFUL, apprentice R. Mason stated that approaching the 1000m., mare raced in restricted room and, in her opinion, WORSHIPFUL resented being crowded by other runners, and when placed under pressure, WORSHIPFUL failed to respond to her riding, and in her opinion the performance was disapponting. A veterinary examination of WORSHIPFUL failed to reveal any abnormalities.

A veterinary examination of LEICA LAUNCH failed to reveal any abnormalities.


RACE 2: MULLINS LAWYERS H'CAP - 1200M.

DUSTY BALL was slow to begin.

STOP DREAMING commenced to hang shortly after passing the 800m. and did so until entering the straight. Trainer M. Price was advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding regarding its racing manners.

RACE 3: PANTHER PRINT PTY LTD H'CAP - 1000M.

WHEREYAGUNAGO jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

PRETTY SLEEK was slow to begin.

Passing the 300m., R. McMahon, rider of WHEREYAGUNAGO, accidentally dropped his whip.

OODLES 'N' OODLES was obliged to race wide throughout the race.

RACE 4: QRSE NUDGEE COLLEGE H'CAP - 1800M.

HIDDEN JEWELS was obliged to race wide in the middle stages.

Passing the 200m., SPARKLING ASCOT was obliged to shift away from the heels of VAIZCAY, which shifted in.

RACE 5: GLENCAIRN MACDERMOTT PTY LTD H'CAP - 1300M.

As A. Gain was to be overweight on ARABIAN GIFT, M. McDonald was substituted as the rider of that horse. A. Gain was fined $100.

RETIREMENT DAY, which became fractious in the barriers, lashed out and struck SNOW PRINCE. Subsequently, both horses were examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and were withdrawn by stewards acting on veterinary advice at 3.13 p.m.. Following the event, all monies invested on RETIREMENT DAY and SNOW PRINCE were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 19 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 17 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets, applicable to successful wagers placed prior to the withdrawal time. Trainer L. Kelly was advised that RETIREMENT DAY would require a further barrier certificate prior to its next race start. Subsequently, C. Whiteley, rider of SNOW PRINCE, was found guilty of a charge under AR 175(j), in that he uttered disparaging and insulting remarks to the club's veterinary surgeon after his horse was declared a late scratching on veterinary advice. C. Whiteley was fined the sum of $200.

REACH was slow to begin.

HEAD FOR COVER jumped inwards at the start and made contact with DESERT FINCH.

Passing the 600m., MISS STRONGHOLD had to be steadied off the heels of MISS FORD and shifted out, taking STAR OF NEDIYM out on to the hind quarters of BUCK'S OWN, which resulted in STAR OF NEDIYM becoming unbalanced.

INNKEEPER'S STAR and BUCK'S OWN were obliged to race wide for the majorityof the race.

Stewards questioned D. Browne in regards to the disappointing performance of REACH. D. Browne stated that the gelding was slow to jump and reluctant to go forward in the early stages of the race. He further added that after being unable to go forward, he was obliged to race in a rearward position. D. Browne explained that the gelding was under pressure after leaving the 700m. and failed to respond to his riding, and, in his opinion, the performance was disappointing.

RACE 6: WAHU H'CAP - 1200M.

Stewards have adjourned an inquiry into the reason why SOLIDIFIED (trainer J. Lyons) was presented to the enclosure with blinkers when the only gear shown on the gear list was a bit burr and tongue-tie.

DISCORD and SHERMAN OAKS came together on jumping away.

EASY ROAD was tightened for room at the start between HONEST NED and INTELLIGENTLY, both of which shifted ground.

Approaching the 900m., BALLY BUCKSHOT had to be steadied off the heels of POLAR WOLF and shifted out, taking MONTE LEONE out on to DISCORD.

HONEST NED was obliged to race wide throughout.

RACE 7: CHRISTIAN BROTHERS' RACEDAY H'CAP - 1400M.

DIOCLES was slow to begin.

Stewards questioned trainer B. Smith and apprentice L. Wray regarding the performance of MR BAADOT. L. Wray stated that after jumping from a wide alley, she was obliged to race in a wide position in the early stages, and as she was unable to hold her position, she elected to go back in the field to find a position closer to the fence. L. Wray further added that the gelding did not appreciate today's track conditions and was reluctant to stretch out for the majority of the race. Trainer B. Smith advised that MR BAADOT would have a short let up prior to its next race start.

RACE 8: EDMUND RICE SERVICES (QLD) INC. H'CAP - 1000M.

OUR COGNAC was a late scratching at 11.35 a.m. on veterinary advice.

Stewards have adjourned an inquiry into the reason why MR MANTLE (Trainer G. Heinrich) was presented to the enclosure with winkers when no added gear was shown on the gear list.

Approaching the 700m., MASTERMIND shifted in when not quite clear of GUMNUTS, which resulted in GUMNUTS having to be steadied and make contact with the running rail. K. Cunningham, rider of MASTERMIND, was reminded of her obligations to fully clear when shifting ground.

Near the 600m., GOLDLANI had to be steadied off the heels of ZARTACUS. A short distance later when GOLDLANI was racing ungenerously, that gelding shifted in, resulting in TRICEA having to be steadied and make contact with the running rail.

SOUTH WIND was obliged to race wide for the majority of the race.

All winners were sent to be swabbed.
