SASSO (W. Clasohm) shifted out at the start, making contact with RAINCATCHER (D. Griffin), which in turn shifted out, making further contact with ALTISSIMO (M. Hellyer).
GIGANDRA (S. Seamer) was tightened for room on jumping away between LOZENGE (M. Heagney) and ROAD FROM HEAVEN (O. Turpin).
Near the 500m, GIGANDRA improved up on to the heels of SASSO and had to be steadied.
Leavnig the 400m, SASSO was tightened for room when racing between GIGANDRA and LOZENGE, which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider. A subsequent veterinary examination of LOZENGE revealed the horse to have sustained a laceration to its head, which was likely to have been caused by being struck by a shoe dislodged from another runner.
Approaching the 300m, GIGANDRA shifted out to improve and in doing so made contact with ONYA CHRIS (K. Forrester).

Race 3: Hot 91 Class 4 H'cap - 1300m

SPORTS ACADEMY was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and cleared to race after trainer M. Reynolds reported that the horse had sustained some minor injuries en route to the course.
SPORTS ACADEMY (M. Wood) was slow to begin.
SIMPLEX (J. Kropp) began awkwardly and shifted in, making contact with MR TOMBOLA (B. Powell).
Stewards questioned trainer M. Reynolds regarding the replacement of jockey N. Evans with apprentice M. Wood. After considering his explanation, stewards were of the opinion there may have been mitigating circumstances, however reminded him of the policy that under normal circumstances a jockey must be replaced with a jockey rather than an apprentice, which occurred in this case.
Stewards questioned App. J. Kropp and Trainer T. Hall over the handling of SIMPLEX, particularly the tactics adopted over the final 400m. App. Kropp stated that his instructions were to go forward on the horse however the horse began awkwardly and rather than push the horse forward he elected to ease the horse to a mid-filed position. When questioned regarding his failure to move SIMPLEX to the outside on the home turn App Kropp stated that he considered that at the time it was in the best interest of the horse to look for a run through the small field. He further stated that SIMPLEX is one paced and does not pick up and sprint particularly over the final 200m which he said was evident in today’s race. T. Hall confirmed the instruction were to lead on the horse and felt that the Apprentice should have pushed forward to race outside the leader even after missing the start. He also was critical of the horse not been taken to the extreme outside in the straight. After considering the matter Stewards were of the opinion that App. Kropp may have erred in not moving SIMPLEX to the outside on the home turn however believe that such error of judgment was not one that would be sufficient, to the standard required, that would warrant a charge under AR.135(b). Stewards noted the circumstances.
Race 4: Programmed Property Services Class 1 H'cap - 1000m
1st – Baqaba 2nd – Noosa Bay 3rd – Kalinga Lady 4th – Sir Edmond
